Subject: Who is this singer? (English Trad.) From: GUEST,Paul Date: 01 Aug 02 - 04:15 AM I'm sure someone will know... Just been looking at the Microsoft Encarta site. It has this singer as an example of English folk song. Anyone know who the singer is? Paul |

Subject: RE: Help: Who is this singer? (English Trad.) From: Ned Ludd Date: 01 Aug 02 - 04:34 AM It does sound a bit like Fred, but maybe not. I don't know Bob Mills. |
Subject: RE: Help: Who is this singer? (English Trad.) From: Dave Bryant Date: 01 Aug 02 - 04:46 AM It doesn't sound like Fred at all - it's not the right accent and it doesn't have Fred's slightly quavery delivery. But then that's not surprising as Bob Mills is from Hampshire not Shropshire. |
Subject: RE: Help: Who is this singer? (English Trad.) From: masato sakurai Date: 01 Aug 02 - 10:26 AM The singer is Bob Mills (retired herdsman, Alresford, Hampshire). I have that Folkways anthology, which was recorded in the fields between 1974 - 1980. Bob Wills sang "The Derby Ram" too. ~Masato |

Subject: RE: Help: Who is this singer? (English Trad.) From: Watson Date: 01 Aug 02 - 11:03 AM OK, I'm embarrassed now - I should have known better! I suppose dear old Fr4ed was on my mind at the time, but listening again, it really doesn't sound much like him. |
Subject: RE: Help: Who is this singer? (English Trad.) From: Murray MacLeod Date: 01 Aug 02 - 12:14 PM For a minute, there, Masato, you had me going. Trying to visualize Bob Wills singing "The Derby Ram", and Eldon Shamblin playing an appropriate guitar break had me enthralled. But sadly, it was just a typo .... Murray |

Subject: RE: Help: Who is this singer? (English Trad.) From: greg stephens Date: 01 Aug 02 - 01:21 PM Bob Wills sings the Penguin Book of English Folksongs would be a bit of a classic wouldn't it? |
Subject: RE: Help: Who is this singer? (English Trad.) From: Schantieman Date: 02 Aug 02 - 11:39 AM Is this really a traditional ballad he's singing? The tune seems to be a variant on 'Villikins and his Dinah' which I thought was a Music Hall song. Steve |
Subject: RE: Help: Who is this singer? (English Trad.) From: masato sakurai Date: 02 Aug 02 - 01:06 PM This song (aka "The Ploughman's Song") has been sung to several tunes. The version in Roy Palmer's Everyman's Book of English Country Songs (p. 20) is also "Villikins and His Dinah," which in turn has been the tune for several songs, such as "Sweet Betsy from Pike." ~Masato |
