Subject: The R.A.G.G. M.O.P.P. song
From:
Date: 14 May 98 - 09:47 AM

I'm trying to find the origins and lyrics of this to help a copy editor. So, far, we've heard that it's a Mills Brothers or Ames Brothers song from the 1950s.

Can anyone help?

There are some links to other sites for song lyrics in the mudcat links page. Have you tried some of them?

BTW. You should also check out Alan Sherman's parody of the song R.A.T.T. F.I.N.K.

Ragmop was a hit in 1950-- lots of folks recorded this and took in onto the "Hit Parade" such as the Ames Brothers (Hit #1 with it) Ralph Flanagan (#3) Lionel Hampton (#7)Johnny Lee Wills (#9) The Starlighters (#12) Jimmy Dorsey (15) And Eddie Howard (24)

This has an early association in my mind to "the butcher dance" and the search to document that dance in rather remote areas of the world.

Does anyone know the story of that dance's ultimate re-discovery? And how was it connected to RAGG MOPP ?

Well, I refuse to write out the entire 4 pages of the tragic tale that Craig Johnson sent me about the BUTCHER DANCE. Enough to make that long story quite short by telling you that AFTER YEARS OF TRYING TO FIND THE BUTCHER DANCE they did get to the remote place in New Guinea where the dance was finally to be done for them so they might record it on film! The preliminaries took place (those lasted all morning and are described in excruciating deail. Finally the dancers snake-dance into the center. They all start to chant these words as they perform the steps: "Ya butcher right foot in--ya butcher right foot out--ya butcher right foot in and ya shake it all about..."

I always kind of liked RaggMopp--for a really bad song, try the Everly Brothers "When"--

When--
When I hold--
When I hold your hand
Then--
Then I know
I know you understand

Or even worse, the Doors' "Light My Fire":

You know that it would be untrue;
You know that I would be a liar,
If I was to say to you,
Girl, we couldn't get much higher.

Come on, baby, light my fire,
Come on, baby, light my fire,
We can set the night on figh--urr.

Double yuck. Finger down the throat yuck. Number one on the hit parade yuck. There is truly no accounting for taste. --seed

Or was it
When,
When you smile,
When you smile at me,
Then,
Then I know,
Our love will always be.

Or does it matter?

I'm so glad to encounter this discussion. For every song I vaue which is hovering deep n the various lobes of my cranium, there is a counter ditty that tendeth to infuriate me, but once the latter is called to the surface by some semi-random association of word or musical phrase it floats before me like pondscum for days. So it is with Lionel Hampton's version of R.A.G.G.M.O.P.P. I'd suggest a few others of like ilk, but fear to wake the Kraken.

This Kraken can't get to sleep, so how about this for an inane, don't-you-just-hate-that-damned-thing song: "If you are happy and you know it, clap your hands". Gawd help me I used to have to sing that as a Brownie - or rather I didn't, as even as a 7 year old I knew the value of pointedly silent protest. I hated that song then, I hate it now - I will hate it if I live to be one hundred! I can see that this Mopp song thingy does seem to run it a close second though! Cheers, Mo

You know, we didn't do our usual thorough job on this. I can verify the lyrics Allan C. posted - they seem to be an exact transcription of the 1950 Ames Brothers recording. Is there another version?

Who Wrote That Song? says "Rag Mop" was written in 1950 by Johnnie Lee Wells and Deacon Anderson, popularized by the Ames Brothers.

And Annie, I like the song. Allan C. is just too young to appreciate it.

Then again, from the WAY I learned it, it may have been Foghorn ('I say, I say') Leghorn, because it goes,

Jeri & jeffp-For a time in late 49/early 50 we did not have a radio or a phonograph in our apartment (but we did have a 10" Hoffman blonde, console tv.) I knew the words to Rag Mop and Chloe as if they were top 40 because of Time for Beany. For a while, the Friday shows had live audiences, and Cece would hand (mouth) out prizes to some lucky kids.
Perchance you guys are from the Sunset Coast?
ps-the words to Chloe were Chloe. or Dun..duh..dun..duh..Chlo-ee.

Friend of mine acidentally killed Bob Clampett, creator of Beany and Cecil. Clampett was in Detroit being interviewed by my friend, maybe about a reissue of the show. This was in the 1980s. It was a cold, blustery winter day and the newspaper was about three blocks from Clampett's hotel. He asked my friend if he should walk back. Sure, my friend said, no problem. Bob made it back to the hotel and had a fatal heart attack.

According to Allmusic.com and BMI, RAG MOP was written by Deacon Anderson and Johnnie Lee Wills.

It has been recorded by The Ames Brothers, Jimmy Dorsey, Ralph Flanagan, Lionel Hampton, Ted Heath, Pee Wee King & His Golden West Cowboys, Joe Liggins & His Honeydrippers, The Mighty Blue Kings, Johnnie Lee Wills & His Boys, and many others.

Johnnie Lee Wills, like his brother Bob Wills, played western swing, suggesting that RAG MOP had a western swing origin before the Ames Brothers and the jazz musicians got hold of it.

Too bad GameGrit didn't even tell us who his grandfather was.

Possibly the lamest version I have ever heard was "performed" by my high school band, circa 1954-55, along with "Rock Around The Clock." This was the era where older performers (and songwriters) were trying to stay "relevant" in the face of the changing tastes of a younger, hipper audience. Rock-n-roll - and Elvis - was just around the corner.

Looking at this message board, this conversation has been going on for most of 10yrs now. I'm just now trying to track down a song and cartoon stuck in the back of my head and you guys/ladies have helped a bunch. Anyway, here is my question. Was this song, RAGGMOPP, a one time thing on the Beany and Cecil show or did they sing it often because it's amazing that the song is the only thing I remembered about the cartoon until I started investigating and little sayings and lines quoted here and there came back as I read them. Still, it's amazing how that song got it started. My wife has no clue about the cartoon and when she asked me where I heard it, I don't even remember. I think it was during the Saturday Morning Show with Bill Cardill and Joe Negri in Pittsburgh but I may be way off with that even. Any answers would be helpful

Although credited as a composition by Wills and his steel guitarist Deacon Anderson, a subsequent court case showed it was a rip-off of "Get The Mop" by Henry 'Red' Allen.

I remember Beany and Cecil and I remember RAGGMOPP, but I don't remember any connection between the two. Obviously there was, since so many people seem to recall hearing the song on the show. The show initially ran locally in Los Angeles as Time for Beany before going national. Groucho Marx said it was one of the few children's shows that also appealed to adults. The fact that Stan Freberg was one of the writers and puppetteers probably had a lot to do with that. My dad and I used to watch it together. One of his favorite characters was Tearalong, the Dotted Lion. I also learned on Wikipedia that Albert Einstein once cut short a lecture on quantum mechanics to get home for Time for Beany.

Raggmopp was used during one of the story lines of Time For Beany whilst, I suppose, the song was popular. When they went on to another adventure, TFB no longer used the song.

I don't think "often" would be accurate, but I'm almost certain it appeared more than once. I remember a "Beany and Cecil" episode in which it appeared sung by Cecil out in the middle of the ocean somewhere, rather than while sitting at a piano in a room as shown in "D.J. the DJ". This was 30-plus years ago, so I've got no idea what the episode title might have been.

Beany and Cecil was definitely my first exposure to RAGGMOPP.

In addition to Tearalong, the Dotted Lion, I also remember an episode in which they had to sail past the Montgomery Cliffs, into the Chimpan Sea. I believe they were on their way to the No Bikini Atoll.

A little more explanation is necessary to understand my previous posting regarding the YMCA and its connection to the "Rag Mop" song.

"Ragging" is a campfire ceremony. While "RagMop" is NOT part of the ceremony - it has been sung at some Y - Campfires

The Rag program is a YMCA youth recognition.. It started in 1914 in California and contrasted with giving awards for athletic skills. Everyone could be recognized. The blue bandanna an award for character attributes like cheerfulness or helpfulness is awarded in the first year. A friendship stone is brought into the circle at "Raggers Point" a location in every camp. Red Rags were originally rare and given for outstanding contributions.

It evolved and expanded through the years - yellow rags - purple rags - brown rags - with various steps.

The YMCA connection to the song is obvious - the puns juvenial.

The "Spirit Lake" Y camp was blasted away by Mount St. Helen - photographer Art Jessup has "naturebyart" has before and after shots of the Ragger's Point (aka chapel) with the cross.
http://www.naturebyart.com/images/31.jpg

Y-Camp songs are generaly universal scout songs and Methodist church hymns "I Would Be True" etc. There are whole collections available easily on the web.

Sincerely,
Gargoyle
