Enough to make that long story quite short by telling you that AFTER YEARS OF TRYING TO FIND THE BUTCHER DANCE they did get to the remote place in New Guinea where the dance was finally to be done for them so they might record it on film! The preliminaries took place (those lasted all morning and are described in excruciating deail. Finally the dancers snake-dance into the center. They all start to chant these words as they perform the steps: "Ya butcher right foot in--ya butcher right foot out--ya butcher right foot in and ya shake it all about..." |

For every song I vaue which is hovering deep n the various lobes of my cranium, there is a counter ditty that tendeth to infuriate me, but once the latter is called to the surface by some semi-random association of word or musical phrase it floats before me like pondscum for days. So it is with Lionel Hampton's version of R.A.G.G.M.O.P.P. I'd suggest a few others of like ilk, but fear to wake the Kraken. |

I can verify the lyrics Allan C. posted - they seem to be an exact transcription of the 1950 Ames Brothers recording. Is there another version? Who Wrote That Song? says "Rag Mop" was written in 1950 by Johnnie Lee Wells and Deacon Anderson, popularized by the Ames Brothers. And Annie, I like the song. Clampett was in Detroit being interviewed by my friend, maybe about a reissue of the show. This was in the 1980s. It was a cold, blustery winter day and the newspaper was about three blocks from Clampett's hotel. He asked my friend if he should walk back. Sure, my friend said, no problem. Bob made it back to the hotel and had a fatal heart attack. |

Johnnie Lee Wills, like his brother Bob Wills, played western swing, suggesting that RAG MOP had a western swing origin before the Ames Brothers and the jazz musicians got hold of it. I think it was during the Saturday Morning Show with Bill Cardill and Joe Negri in Pittsburgh but I may be way off with that even. Any answers would be helpful |

Obviously there was, since so many people seem to recall hearing the song on the show. The show initially ran locally in Los Angeles as Time for Beany before going national. Groucho Marx said it was one of the few children's shows that also appealed to adults. The fact that Stan Freberg was one of the writers and puppetteers probably had a lot to do with that. My dad and I used to watch it together. One of his favorite characters was Tearalong, the Dotted Lion. I also learned on Wikipedia that Albert Einstein once cut short a lecture on quantum mechanics to get home for Time for Beany. |

I remember a "Beany and Cecil" episode in which it appeared sung by Cecil out in the middle of the ocean somewhere, rather than while sitting at a piano in a room as shown in "D.J. the DJ". This was 30-plus years ago, so I've got no idea what the episode title might have been. |

"Ragging" is a campfire ceremony. While "RagMop" is NOT part of the ceremony - it has been sung at some Y - Campfires
The Rag program is a YMCA youth recognition.. It started in 1914 in California and contrasted with giving awards for athletic skills. Everyone could be recognized. The blue bandanna an award for character attributes like cheerfulness or helpfulness is awarded in the first year. A friendship stone is brought into the circle at "Raggers Point" a location in every camp. Red Rags were originally rare and given for outstanding contributions.
It evolved and expanded through the years - yellow rags - purple rags - brown rags - with various steps.
The YMCA connection to the song is obvious - the puns juvenial.
The "Spirit Lake" Y camp was blasted away by Mount St. Helen - photographer Art Jessup has "naturebyart" has before and after shots of the Ragger's Point (aka chapel) with the cross.
Y-Camp songs are generaly universal scout songs and Methodist church hymns "I Would Be True" etc. There are whole collections available easily on the web.
