I use this site alot to locate lyrics and appreciate the attached MIDI files. My question is where can I find the simple melody written out in notes. I'm looking for just the melody not chords or anything instrument specific. Any ideas? I locate an obscure old song like Coo Coo Bird but I can't find the melody to know how the tune goes.

Digital Tradition Mirror may be IT. You'll find:

The Cuckoo
The Cuckoo (4) (with tune)
The Cuckoo is a Funny Bird
Cuckoo's a Bonny Bird (with tune)
Cuckoo She's a Pretty Bird (with tune)

Best thing to is to go to JC's ABC Tune Finder and do a search--you'll find the tune offered in a variety of ways, including an abc file(opens with a simple freeware notation program--there is a download link on the site) which can be both listened to and viewed/printed out as in regular notation--more often than not, the chords are appear as well-- Here is a link to the search results for "cuckoo", which includes several different cuckoo tunes, including "The Cuckoo is a Pretty Bird" qhich is the one that I am guessing that you are after: Cuckoo search from JC's ABC Tune Finder

Sorry, that is only the "Cuckoo is a Pretty Bird" file--anyway, try the search--if you look for folk/traditional tunes, abc is a great tool, because so much has been converted to it--

There are many shareware packages on offer which can produce a score from various tune formats, including MIDI and abc.

I admit that the score facilities of my own offering HARMONY do not compare with specialist scoring packages, but are adequate for most simple melodies.

The reason is that HARMONY is intended to be a music processor, not just a display facility. It can add value to tunes, for example by adding 3rds or 5ths, adding chords, or making a tune into a round.

It can import MIDI and ABC tunes, or create new, randomly generated, tunes in folk styles. (Some are good, some are awful!)

Download (free) is at www.greenhedges
