I am hoping there is someone out there with enough Gaelic to give me a full translation of the words to An Gabhar Ban, which is off a Clannad Album. I'd also be interested in links to the Irish language, particularly guides in pronouncing the words:

AN GABHAR BÁN

Kitty Johnny Sheáin as Gaoith Dobhair
a thug an t-amhrán seo don ghrúpa.

Sa tsean ghleann thiar a bhí sí riamh
Go dtí gur fhás na hadharc' uirthi
Bliain is céad is corradh laethe.
Go dtáinig an aois go tréan uirthi
Bhí sí i gcró bheag ins an cheo
Go dtáinig feil'Eoin is gur éalaigh sí
Thart an ród san bealach mór
Gur lean a' tóir go géar uirthi.

Ní raibh nduine ar a tóir ach Donnchú óg
Is d'ith sí an lón san t-anlann air
Ní raibh aige ina dhorn ach ceap túirne mór
Agus leag sé anuas ón arradh í
Nuair a chuala an gabhar bán go raibh sí ar lár
thug sí léim chun tárrthála
Thug sí rás 's ní raibh sí sásta
Is leag sí spíon an táilliúra.

Chomh cruinn le rón gur thóg sí feoil
Gan pís gan mórán déibhirce
Ach d'ith sí cíb agus barr an fhraoich
Slánlus mín is craobhógaí
Draoin is dreas is cuileann glas
Gach ní ar dhath na h-áinleoga
Cutharán sléibhe, duilliúr féile
Caora sréana agus blainséogaí.

Chuaigh sí dhíol cíos le Caiftín Spits
Is chreathnaigh a croí go dtréigfí í
Chaith sí an oíche ar bheagán bidh
Mar ndúil is go gcasfaí féar uirthi
D'Fan sí 'a óiche i dtóin Ros Coill
is chaith sí é go pléisiúra
Go dtáinig an slua ar maidin go luath
Is thug siad amach as Éirinn í.

Thanks for the link, but y'gotta admit it doesn't quite leap out at you, the meaning that is. Anyone have an explanation in plain ol' modern English?

You're right, robomatic -- that translator sort of petered out! The story seems clear enough, though -- frisky old goat eludes capture, eats everything in sight, until it's... well... hmm...

Check out these links: Gaelic Pronunciation and Dictionary.

Cheers,
Michael

You're right, that translation leaves something to be desired. It's Donegal Irish and there are words I don't recognise. There are some typos as well in the Irish.
