In most areas, there is a post office designated for passport services. You can click here to get all the information you need, and to get printable passport applications online. I was amazed by the efficiency of service when I got my passport.

In the 1970's, I worked in the Federal Building that had the only passport office in Los Angeles County. You couldn't get a passport at a post office in those days, so everybody had to go to our building. Our secretary used to keep a log of all the celebrities she'd meet in the elevator. I used the stairs, and didn't see many celebrities myself. It was a futuristic building that looked kind of like a streamline-style toaster with rounded corners. It was used as Police Headquarters in a short-lived TV series called Future Cop. Ernest Borgnine was the star, and I used to see him there quite often.

Oh, and we had a CIA office next door to us. All I know about them was that they had a gorgeous secretary. Never saw any agents.

Just did it via my local post office. They told me I could do it via mail or directly. If your old passport is less than 2 years expired, you can get expedited service. Unfortunately, the rates just went up. Go there with the photographs in your hand and the old passport and you can make all your arrangements in one trip. Have fun!

Thanks, folks. I'll go get some photos done and be done with it!

Not all post offices can do this -- usually the big main branch in your area. And don't count on the post office hours being the passport window hours. Calling ahead can save some frustrations.

Nicole, you may be right but the service window at my local/little post office had it all right there. It can't hurt to check, tho.
