Can't elope to Orange, New Jersey
But we'd make a peach of a pair
Oh, honey, do, say you'll be true
Cause I'm plumb bananas over you!

Dad used to recite that bit of doggerel...

If anybody wants to hear this song, They can go to Kim Wallach's website, and purchase her album "Paddle on the Rahway" for 15 bucks. They'll be getting an excellent album by a fine singer.

I have additional lyrics and slightly different version , don't know the source.

I found a peach in Orange, New Jersey in apple blossom time
There was a great big lemony moon
and the date i picked. i'll pick again soon
Blueberry eyes, strawberry lips
made me feel sub-lime
And in the lucious midnight air
everybody said, as they stop and stared
"Orange" you a sugary pear
I found a peach in Orange, New Jersey in apple blossom time

You can have your tangerines, your mangoes down in New Orleans,
or all of the papaya in "Hawaii-a".
You can even have a half an avacado ..
Apricots and Honey-dew and everything from Kalamazoo
The State of California prunes that grow as big as toy balloons or
take a trip to Tripoli for melon,
You can row to Rome and home and roam again,
You can look around you can stop and shop but i found the pick of the crop
when i found a peach in Orange, New Jersey in apple blossom time

I have to confess that I have an actual 78 rpm record of that ridiculous song. The lyrics reported here are correct.

And then there was the Hoosier Hot Shots' "I Found a Lemon in the Garden of love, Where I Heard Only Peaches Grow"

we had the 78 when i was a kid and remember the lyrics:

i found a peach in orange new jersey in apple blossom time
there was a great big lemony moon
and the date i picked. i'll pick again soon
blueberry eyes, strawberry lips
made me feel sub-lime
and in the precious midnight air
everybody said, as they stopped to stare
aren't you the perfect pear
Oh, I found a peach in orange new jersey in apple blossom time

you can have your tangerines, your mangoes down in new orleans, and all the papaya in hawaii. you can take a trip to tripoli for melon, you can look around you can stop and shop but i found the pick of the crop
when i found a peach in orange new jersey in apple blossom time

Still no one with the lyrics?!

I used to have an old 78rpm record of this song until it fell off of my bed. It names probably 2 dozen fruits. Unfortunately when that record fell off of my bed, so did Der Fuhrer's Face!

I found a peach in Orange New Jersey in apple blossom time,

There was a great big lemony moon,

And the date I picked I'll pick again soon . . .

The song adduced by Genie above is very similar to the snatch sung by Danny Kaye [lyrics by Sylvia Fine] in the "Manic-Depressive Pictures Present" cinema-foyer song in his first film, "Up In Arms" ~~ an intentional travesty of the sort of song one would expect to hear sung in a Hollywood musical of the time: "When it's apple-blossom time in Orange New Jersey, We'll make a peach of a pair ['pear']; Oh I know we can't elope ['canteloupe'], but honey do be mine..."

I had someone sign this to me years/decades ago. He was from New York, worked in the UPS Maspeth Hub. I remember "When it's apple blossom time in Orange, New Jersey, Honeydew be mine." I wish I could remember the rest of it.

There was another song, with very similar lyric, that contained the line:

"When it's apple blossom time in Orange County,
You know we'll make a peach of a pair."

The correct info is:
"I Found a Peach in Orange New Jersey (In Apple Blossom Time)"
Lyric by Edward Heyman
Music by Harold Spina
© 1942 (Renewed) Edwin H. Morris & Company, A Division of MPL Communications, Inc.

The web site of the Monterey Bay Area Cooperative Library System says you can order a copy of the sheet music through your local public library. (Sounds too good to be true; they have a huge collection.)

I found this, which is not complete, and several references to it that say Harold Spina, 1940.
