'Minotaur's Song' is Track 1 on the Incredible String Band's 1968 Elektra LP "The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter" (probably re-released on CD)

ooh! i love labyrinths! i was just looking at two books of designs and i plan to construct one soon. the first song that came to me was "'Tis a Gift To Be Simple" as there is a line in there: "for in turning and turning we come out right"!! that's the best one i can think of... Is it possibel to see a picture of the labyrinth you are referring to? Is is a Chartres pattern, or based on the design from Crete? The labyrinth society is having a convention in Sacramento CA in Sept. I am considering going...there are lots of lab. links... try: www.labyrinthsociety.org. Let me know how it goes! Laurel

It is a traditional Chartres pattern - 11 circuits and 41 feet in diameter.

I've looked around on the labyrinth sites, but noting comes up to do with music. I'm likely to write something myself but if someone else feels the desire to do so - please, by all means, do.

To me a fairly simple round would be a perfect, but that's just my opinion.

EBarnacle, I'm afraid I don't understand your post.

A check at Altrion gives Lawrence Dean's album, "Layrinth of Shadows". He also has a song book of the same title, but I can't lay my hands on my copy at present.

How about the song, Prayer for peace?

Peace before us, peace behind us, peace under our feet
Peace within us, peace over us, let all around us be peace.

Other verses replace the word peace with love, light, Christ, etc.

here's a little info from the labyrinth book by Sid Lonegren--it describes an eight circuit Cretan form where there would be eight paths, but the order which you walk them in (the entrance leads you into the third "layer" from the outside...etc. then when you make the first turn, you are in the second circuit..etc) is 3-2-1-4/7-6-5-8 sort of hard to put into words, there are graphics in the book which explain this better, but the basic concept is that the musical scale is equated with the paths and the key of "c" 1=middle c, 2=d, 3=e, 4=f, 5=g, 6=a, 7=b, 8= c so the tune that corresponds to these paths is : E-D-C-F / B-A-G-C . THIS DOES NOT MATCH YOUR 11 PATH LABYRINTH, BUT IT IS AN INTERESTENG CONCEPT TO TAKE THE SACRED GEOMETRY AND TRANSLATE IT TO MUSIC...the suggestion is to play this tune while walking the path... as for a round--the Vine and Fig Tree is quite inspiring if you are looking for a Peace theme....it is in a minor key, so would fit the earlier mentioned Minor-tour... (Minotaur?)

Cause it hurts like hell"

There are a lot of circle dances that can do done in labyrinths as well. Where are you? There is probably a facilitator nearby who could go over a few with you. PM if you want more info. (I teach circle dance myself, but have never done labyrinths and am in Toronto. However, I'll forward this question to the dance list.)

Hi all,

I'm in Orlando, hesperis.

Really I was just looking for a simple chant / song that might have been written specifically for labyrinths and the meditative / spiritual resource they'veb become in the last 20 years or so.

Thanks for all the suggestions (and puns) I'd just hoped that someone would know of (or be inspired to write) a song about walking the labyrinth. I'll try to find sometime to work on it myself, I'm just cursed with the type of song writing that just pops into my head for no reason and I have to sit down and write it out.

Keep thinking of stuff, if you can.

Thanks again.

Blackcatter, I wasn't sure what you meant by "labyrinth song," but now that you've clarified it, danged if I can think of any. ARE there songs about labyrinths?

BTW, can any of you folks think of anything that rhymes with "labyrinth?"

RJ

My rhyming dictionary says:

plinth, helminth, colocynth, terebinth

yeesh - I'm going to have to look those up...

-------------------------

plinth - n.

1. A block or slab on which a pedestal, column, or statue is placed.

2. The base block at the intersection of the baseboard and the vertical trim around an opening.

3. A continuous course of stones supporting a wall. Also called plinth course.

4. A square base, as for a vase.

hel·minth - n.

A worm, especially a parasitic roundworm or tapeworm.

col·o·cynth - n. In both senses also called bitter apple.

1. A tendril-bearing Old World vine (Citrullus colocynthis) bearing yellowish, green-mottled fruits the size of small lemons.

2. The fruit of this plant, whose dried, bitter, spongy pulp is a very strong laxative.

ter·e·binth - n.

A small Mediterranean tree (Pistacia terebinthus) that is a source of tanning material and turpentine.

There are a couple of chants that are used for dancing the labyrinth.

"We are a circle
Within a circle
With no beginning
And never ending"

I've forgotten the dance to that one, and you may be able to find the melody by a search.
Let me know if you need the melody.

"Spiralling into the center
The center of our shield
Spiralling into the center
The center of our shield

I am the weaver, I am the woven one
I am the dreamer, I am the dream
I am the weaver, I am the woven one
I am the dreamer, I am the dream"

For this one, the dance is very simple, it's basically just walking to the beat. Walk right, walk left, walk right, rock back on left. (That's known as the "four seasons" step, going forward for Spring, Summer, and Fall, then "resting" for Winter before starting again.)
So, let me know if you need the music for that.

I have no clue who wrote those, they are "classic" chants but may not be public domain.

Hope this helps!

Labyrinth also rhymes with one pronunciation of Absinthe. I think you need to be on it to dream up a maze!

All kidding aside, a slow, simple chant would be a good way to follow. I would even suggest slowly sliding the feet along the path you follow. Good luck.
