Subject: Kate Wolf: artists and music she sang about?
From: GUEST,Kees

Kate Wolf for sure is one of the best voices ever in folk music. Her lyrics often deal with music and artists.
Her fantastic song Poet's Heart is about Eric Bogle, I guess.
And See Here She Said, to me defenitly one of her best songs, is for Judy Mayhan as the notes on the album say.
The Boy From Oklahoma is about Woody Guthrie.
Any more examples?

Listening to All He Ever Saw Was You, I wondered whom Kate sang about. "He was bigger than his songs". Who is He? Anybody knows?

Your guess that "Poet's Heart" was about Eric Bogle is partly correct. The first verse is about him. Other verses are about Utah Phillips and Judy Mayhan.

And yes, "All He Ever Saw Was You" was about Stan Rogers. "Boy From Oklahoma," sung by Kate, was about Woody Guthrie, but it was written by Willis Alan Ramsey.

Thank you, Max, for answering. Great!
I know the fantastic homepage the family has made. There is so much info on it, sorry if I missed about Stan Rogers.
It features a "song of the month", but alas last month seems to have lasted two years now... Is it possible to recycle the first songs of the month on the site?

And are there plans to release the remaining songs Kate recorded? I wouldn't mind inferior sound quality. Kate's voice makes each demo as a release worthwile. For instance, I love to hear her sing Peace Carol, song of the month 2½ years ago, though the sound quality might be poor.
I'm sure I'm not the only one dying to hear the leftovers and remaining demo's of Kate's unknown songs!

I must confess that I'm not familiar with Stan Rogers, shame in Mudcatland I guess. But I'm gonna check him out now. I originally guessed that "All he ever ..." was about Gil Turner ("Bigger" than his music seems in some way appropiate).

And who was the person in "Trumpet Vine", who sat, holding a guitar?

it reminded me of other times
you had come before
and brought a song
or just walked in
through the kitchen door

I love "Cornflower Blue" so much. Reminds me of my children's father when we first met and his blue eyes hooked my womanly heart ... I was at a jam yesterday, as a matter of fact, and afterward sat around noodling with another musician. I sang two of Kate Wolf's songs("Two-Way Waltz" and "Here in California") that he had never heard and he sang two of Stan Rogers' that I had never heard ("Lies" (?) and another one I can't remember right now). But I've decided I HAVE to have some Stan Rogers in my life for absolutely certain.

I wish I had a time machine and could go back and hear Kate perform.

The news had come by some time back, when a rider stopped to say,
Big North, young Kate, and the Goody boy had up and passed away
Leaving me and darling Rosie and our kind to carry on....

- The Year of '88 (Christopher Shaw)

Knew the song for years before I figured out what that line was about.

Peter.

And---the interesting thing about Eric Bogle is this. When I had the pleasure of recording an interview with him a few years back he spoke of his love for Kate Wolf and her music---and as he said---I paraphrase---I never met her and was a latecomer to her music. Only after she passed on. He had some other truly witty and touching things to say on the subject.

The reference to Stan Rogers is from his love song to his wife, "Honey, all I ever see is you."
