Back in Washington DC in the folk music coffee house scene around 1965 I heard and collected the words to a song that was given the title "City Woman" by the performer. I did not make note of the name of the person from whom I learned the song (bad me) nor was I able to reliably ascertain at that time who the author of the song was or if or by whom it had ever been recorded. The "rumor" at the time was that it was a Bessie Smith song, although I have never heard any of her work that even remotely sounds like this song, and I have not been able to find it in any listing of the songs performed by her. I have not been able to find the words to the song in any listing I have ever been able to access.

The first verse goes as follows:

I have a green hill; and I've a twistin' and leafy lane,
Why then does my heart ache to see once more
City streets swept clean by drivin' rain?
If anyone has any information as to the author of this song, (or anything else about it) please let me know.

Thanks!

KittyKat
