Subject: RE: p stands for paddy From: Bruce O. Date: 19 May 98 - 03:02 PM "The House Carpenter" is by Laurence Price, Feb., 1657 (ZN2466 in my broadside index), and has nothing to do with "T stands for Thomas", unless someone go their songs mixed up. The earliest copy of the latter that I can find is a version collected in 1907 and published in JFSS #19, p. 174, 1915.

Subject: Lyr Add: P STANDS FOR PADDY From: Jim Dixon Date: 06 Aug 09 - 07:40 PM Here's how the song appears in Song and Story: An Anthology of Irish Folk Songs by Michael D. Morrissey, page 161: P STANDS FOR PADDY 1. As I rode out upon a May morning for to take a pleasant walk, I sat meself down beside a stone wall for to hear two lovers talk; For to hear what they might say, my dear, for to hear what they might say, So that I might know a little more about love before that I'd go away. CHORUS: P stands for Paddy, I suppose; J for my love John. W stands for false Willy-o but Johnny is the fairest man. Ay, Johnny is the fairest man, my dear. Johnny is the fairest man, And I don't care what anybody says, for Johnny is the fairest man. 2. Well, it's come and sit beside me, love, together on the green. It's a long three-quarters of a year or more since together we have been, Since together we have been, my dear, since together we have been. It's a long three-quarters of a year or more since together we have been. 3. No, I'll not sit by you, love, now or at any other time, For you're in love with another pretty girl, and your heart's no longer mine, And your heart's no longer mine, my dear, and your heart's no longer mine. It's a short three-quarters of a year or more, and your heart's no longer mine. 4. Well, I'll go and climb a high, high tree, and I'll rob that wild bird's nest, And back I'll come and give a little thought to the girl that I love best, To the girl that I love best, my dear, to the girl that I love best. Oh, back I'll come and give a little thought to the girl that I love best. |
