Subject: Manly stubble - What's the verdict?
From: Little Hawk
Date: 12 Aug 02 - 10:45 AM

After all this brouhaha about womanly jiggles, I think it's time to exhaust another fertile subject that has nothing whatsoever to do with folk music...but maybe with the blues. Manly stubble. Is it hot? Is it not? Do you ladies like your man with a little stubble, no stubble, or a whole lot?

Certain individuals like Clint Eastwood, Don Johnson and Bob Dylan have gotten a lot of mileage out of manly stubble. So whaddya think?

Rave away, folks...

I figure we can beat this one to death in under 150 posts easily.

Dylan just looks scruffy with his stubble. Some people look good with it and some don't.

I guess it just depends. I like Mister either clean, or bearded. But of course, there's that in-between time when he's growing a beard, that he's stubbly.

So, I guess I don't know. :-)

Stubble looks good with square well defined chins but does nothing for receding chins.

Are guys still walking around half-shaved? Maybe I don't get out of these woods often enough.....

I always thought the "stubble look" was little else than a ploy on the part of a few lazy, overpaid "stars" to justify their own sloth. "Hi! I'm A)Don Johnson or B)Brad Pitt and I've just been too f***ing lazy to shave for the last few days. But, hey, I'm a superstar, so instead of 'laziness' will call it a, uhhh, 'fashion statement'. Yeh, that's the ticket."

Other guys can do whatever they want with their facial hair, but I'm going to either grow it out or shave it off - no in-between.

Bruce

unless it is on its way to becoming a beard, or is just a vacation/weekend whatever break, it looks ridiculous and affected and pompous.

Stubble looks good on those it looks good on. But when one is affecting it as a "fashion statement" it simply means that I will be today whatever I need to be to look "in". And that has never worked for me. When I like something, I wear it, whether it is "in" or not.

I like the look but don't like to snog (kiss), stubble is prickly.

I gotta say I'm not fond of the continual "I haven't shaved for four days" look. Either it's becoming something, or it's not.

My hb. has the ever-changing facial hair fiesta going on. I never know what he's going to do next. So there's frequent stubble, but it doesn't stay that way long.

I like the look of the 'designer stubble' but come on girls it's not good in the kissing stakes, you get red rashes and sore lips. I like clean shaven men but I am also partial to a man with a a nice soft beard!!!

Morticia is spot on. Depends whether we're talking about the look or the feel. Stubble = abrasive sandpaper.

I still can't workout why men shave. Come to think of it why do women shave legs and armpits? We leave our arms alone so why not the other bits?

I saw an advert on TV for a foam that removes hair while you shower. Why don't men use that instead? It's s'posed to last longer and be smoooooooooth! Why scrape your face risking slicing it and bleeding.

I like hairy faces BTW.

I think Bruce up top there had it right on the mark

"...the "stubble look" was little else than a ploy on the part of a few lazy, overpaid "stars" to justify their own sloth. "Hi! I'm A)Don Johnson or B)Brad Pitt and I've just been too f***ing lazy to shave for the last few days. But, hey, I'm a superstar, so instead of 'laziness' will call it a, uhhh, 'fashion statement'. "

Any time I see it, the overriding impression is - "Idle tosser can't even be bothered to shave."

In the immortal last words of Julius Caeser "TEE HEE Brutus!" LOL!!

You're right, Kat. I began to prefer humour to endless deeply serious wrangles with people of opposing viewpoints, but I am still willing to wrangle now and then if I really care enough about the subject...

I think it helps my state of mind not to take either myself or other people too seriously at least part of the time. You should have seen how serious I was when I was a youngster...

When talking bout manly stubble
I hate to burst your bubble
But it scratches when short and so...
Let it grow
Let it grow
Let it grow!!!!!

Some guys grow stubble in an amazingly short time, too. Then it doesn't matter how much they shave, they still have that sexy "just got out of bed" look. But... it scratches. Sigh.

Someday I'll post something in earnest about music. I liked long hair and beard till I started losing some hair, and had to let go, was ratty looking in my case. I like the look when the hair is near the same length as a day or so of stubble, but too many days growth gets inbetweeny looking, sometimes. If nothing else, David Hockney's ink drawings of it are enough to justify the look. I have to shave for occasions of affection.

Not all women do shave, at all, and this was actually a topic in my college days. I've never cared much about it one way or another, and was surprised how strongly some people feel about it. It's true that most of the hippie women I knew weren't very hairy anyway, maybe it would start to seem unkempt at some point.

I insist that everything does, somehow, at some abstract level, have to do with folk and blues. I'm not sure why or how, but on faith, I believe: it must. Why does my stubble begin to look scruffy to me, and why do I sometimes like the somewhat tidier sound of a capoed guitar, if only on the first fret? Is there a connection there? Why does it drive some people crazy if I don't clip my strings off at the tuning keys? The quality of scruffiness is not strained.

Someone pointed out that Dylan looks scruffy when he's stubbly. Dead right. He often looks scruffy regardless, actually, but the unshaven bit really puts the "S" in scruffy where Bob is concerned.

I love those scenes where Brad Pitt comes in all unshaven and naked to the waist...you can tell that he is just the ULTIMATE example of: "God, I am SOOOO sexy. I don't need to shave, ever, because I am the "I" in irresistible. I don't even need to wash. Well, I think I'll just let it grow for another day or two...drives 'em wild..."

Kissing Brad Pitt on such occasions must be a bit like colliding with a circular sander.

To the ladies, getting close to a guy with stubble may have all the charm of being caressed by a cactus, but if I go more than a day or two without shaving, it starts to itch like crazy!

He drove them in with a hammer
And bit them off inside.

(There. Now it's a music thread.)
