Subject: RE: Clarification request on acronyms/abbreviations From: Doug Chadwick Date: 08 Mar 11 - 12:48 PM In that case, Doug, why concern yourself with this thread at all? Because some people will insist on using them in threads where I do have an interest. Their justification is that "everyone uses them". Well, everyone doesn't use them – I don't for a start. The only way I can get this across to people is by standing up and saying "NO!" as loudly and as often as possible and, for that, I make no apology. DC |

What nobody has mentioned is that pretty well every one of these acronyms or abbreviations [an important distinction as someone else noted a bit back] can be simply found by googling. GIAYN ~~ just made that one up: Google Is All You Need. Pronounced 'Guy-Ain' ~~ so it is an acronym (but you won't find it on Google ~ yet!}. ~Michael~ A double meaning for LOL must assume that the receiver of your message knows both meanings. You don't want someone to get a message: "I heard your Dad died. LOL," who only knows the first meaning. I have tried to avoid using any of these internet acronyms, since I don't know what most of them mean anyway. I worry when I see people writing, "C U later." |

Subject: RE: Clarification request on acronyms From: Desert Dancer Date: 06 Mar 11 - 10:54 AM "Acronym" may have been used inappropriately in the thread title, but the OP's (original poster's) intent for the thread was clear at the start. Subject: RE: Clarification request on acronyms From: GUEST,Jim Date: 26 Aug 06 - 11:52 AM re:YGM - "You've Got Mail." Why was this grammatically incorrect sentence adopted? YHM - "You have mail" uses the same number of keystrokes for the acronym and two less for the actual phrase. It reminds me of the show "America's Got Talent". Once again, "America Has Talent" is no longer or cumbersome (2 less keystrokes). It should be "America Don't Got No Grammar". |
