In that case, Doug, why concern yourself with this thread at all?

Because some people will insist on using them in threads where I do have an interest. Their justification is that "everyone uses them". Well, everyone doesn't use them – I don't for a start. The only way I can get this across to people is by standing up and saying "NO!" as loudly and as often as possible and, for that, I make no apology.

LoL can be laughoutloud or lotsoflove acc to context. What nobody has mentioned is that pretty well every one of these acronyms or abbreviations [an important distinction as someone else noted a bit back] can be simply found by googling. GIAYN ~~ just made that one up: Google Is All You Need.   Pronounced 'Guy-Ain' ~~ so it is an acronym (but you won't find it on Google ~ yet!}.

~Michael~

A double meaning for LOL must assume that the receiver of your message knows both meanings. You don't want someone to get a message:
"I heard your Dad died. LOL," who only knows the first meaning.

I have tried to avoid using any of these internet acronyms, since I don't know what most of them mean anyway. I worry when I see people writing, "C U later."

In that case, Doug, why concern yourself with this thread at all? What I was drawing attention to was the ease with which those who were seeking enlightenment by starting or contributing to it could have found the 'clarification' the title of the thread 'requests' by one simple, trouble-saving expedient.

But why should I have to Google? If people are too lazy to write in English, then I can't be bothered to try and decipher their messages.

"Acronym" may have been used inappropriately in the thread title, but the OP's (original poster's) intent for the thread was clear at the start.

NPR = National Public Radio (U.S. non-commercial radio news provider)
PBS = Public Broadcasting Service (comparable, for TV)

CDSS = Country Dance & Song Society (North American organization in support of Anglo-American traditional dance and song, originally a branch of EFDSS, the English Folk Dance & Song Society - sans "Song", at that time)

MOR = middle of the road

UK help please: LNE?

An acronym is only an acronym if it is pronounced as a word. NATO and MIDI are acronyms. YMMV, WTF and IMHO are abbreviations. YMM not V.

re:YGM - "You've Got Mail."

Why was this grammatically incorrect sentence adopted? YHM - "You have mail" uses the same number of keystrokes for the acronym and two less for the actual phrase. It reminds me of the show "America's Got Talent". Once again, "America Has Talent" is no longer or cumbersome (2 less keystrokes). It should be "America Don't Got No Grammar".

Actually, the Folklore Society of Greater Washington is FSGW, with only one G. Mudcatters also sometimes use those initials to refer to the annual "Getaway" gathering, hosted by FSGW; it's a great place to meet lots of 'Catters -- coming up in October! Hope to see you there!

FSGW = Folklore Society of Greater Washington (D.C.)

Just a request to everyone who uses an acronym for festivals, societies, anthologies, etc. to please reference them with the full title in your first cite. Some of us aren't familiar with them all, esp. the more regional ones. Thanks, very much. Maybe we need an musical-related acronym index?:-)
