Subject: London Folk Clubs From: Kate Date: 14 Aug 02 - 03:15 PM I recently moved here and would welcome any recommendations for good London Folk Clubs. I have a copy of Folk London but would be grateful for any comments on the clubs around here. What's good and what's not? I particularly like informal venues with both musicians and singers. I think I remember seeing that they had several good guests. I'm also interested in Sharps. Sounds good but don't remember seeing that in the listings. Would you mind telling me where and when that is? I saw your name listed in a discussion about Sidmouth and part of it mentioned the Middle Bar Singers. Did you go to the Anchor this year? I normaly end up pretty much living there for the week! |

What Anahata missed is that due to the lack of PELs OR&C, Islington, Cellar Upstairs and Musical Traditions are all strictly members only. Sharps is open to customers "off the street". Don't know about the other two, I'm sure Kitty will advise about Herga. For OR&C and Islington membership go to clik.to/membership If you want singer/guitarists sitting in a circle try the singers nights at Tudor at the end of the Met line. For a purely music session there are the English music sessions at the Market Porter, Borough Market. For mixed music/song sessions you will need a car to get out into the Home Counties. |

We usually have one guest a month, and run the other Mondays as singarounds (instruments welcome), except that on 2 September we have Packie Byrne with Breda McKinney, and on 23 September we have Mudcat's own Rick Fielding. And we don't meet on Bank Holidays. I've just been sent the forthcoming programmes for Musical Traditions and the Cellar Upstairs, and they both look pretty good. And if you're thinking of going to the Old Rose and Crown, Patterson, Jordan, Dipper will be launching their Flat Earth CD there on 5 September. Alternatively you can see Ralphie as a Fraser sister at the Cellar Upstairs on 16 November. The new venue is The Cock Tavern, 23 Phoenix Road, NW1 1HB (on the corner of Chalton Street, near King's Cross and Euston stations)8.15 on Saturdays, from 7 September. Kitty |

But I've checked and the last trains turn out to be 11.33 and 12.03 from Liverpool Street, so it should be doable by tube. Though, for Tottenham Hale, it turns out the last train is 10.53, and nothing more till 5.30 am. What a way to run a railway. How does it compare with the situation of people living 20 miles or so outside other capital cities, in towns with a railway link? |

We are primarily interested in singing (as opposed to instrumental sessions) and we're looking for singarounds or open mike situations but we might be interested in a guest singer. Anywhere we can reach on the tube will be considered. Our list so far includes Cecil Sharp House (Tuesdays), Folk in the Cellar (2nd and 4th Mondays), Folk Around (Thursdays) and the Unity Folk Club (last Monday). We would appreciate it if anyone can verify the above or add to our list with current information. Bev and Jerry |

It is an afternoon session, from 2:30 to 5:00pm, and is ALL chorus songs. Bricklayers Arms, Waterman Street, Putney SW15 1DD. Also the monthly Shanty & Sea Songs singaround which will be Sunday 19th March. 12 Noon to 3:00pm, Horseshoe Inn, Melior Street, SE1 3QP. 5 mins walk from London Bridge Station. Good Luck Garry |
