Hi guys, Have any of you heard of Pat Humphries before, or her song, "Swimming to the Other Side"? If you have, isn't that song sooo awesome (both the traditional and slang definitions of the word apply!). If you have heard of the artist and/or the song, where did you hear about it?

If you haven't heard of the song, you should definitely check out the song and a short discussion of it from NPR's "All Things Considered" at this address (sorry, don't know how to make the clickie thing)

click here added by a joeclone

Not only does it have a lovely tune, but also the lyrics are some of the most uplifting and inspirational I have heard in a really long time. It makes you want to go out and hug a tree, hug a neighbor, and write to your local politician all at the same time!!

Check it out!!!! Then tell me what you think

I agree - excellent tune. Any idea if the lyrics or chords are transcribed anywhere?

That's a good song! And here is a blue clicky to the page about it, with links to her singing it on RealAudio.

Never heard of her. That's what I like about this whole folk thing. You never know what you ae going to meet up with.

And I love what she says here: "This did not just come out of me. This came from a lot of different people and different places, and I just happened to be here at the right time for it to flow through my pen, my tape recorder. It's very emotional for me." (Pat Humphries, about the moment she wrote 'Swimming to the Other Side')

It says at her website that they will be notating the song and self-publish: click here, please.

Beautiful, loving song. Would that it was an anthem for the world and that the world would really believe in it. Thanks so much.

kat

Isn't it so neat the way that music can affect us! Simply by listening to the U2 "Joshua Tree" album, I automatically think of driving to Southern California with my parents as a small child. Or when I hear a sad song like something from the Cranberries, I will become really depressed. Or when I hear anything from Paul Simon's "Graceland" album, I instantly cheer up! How can music not be a part of our lives?!?!?!

This is a powerful song, will definitely become a classic. I never heard of her before but I'm hooked. Will be in many a singer's repertoire. The simplicity of it astounds me and the tune is addictive, I can't stop humming it.

I hate to rain on the parade here, but I don't share the sentiment, though I must confess at the outset that I've never been a fan of 'hugging' songs.

It seems like there are twice as many words per line as there should be, given the tune. This makes the whole thing hurried and jumbled, and any real emotional attachment gets trampled.

It's sort of like, if you have a good 9-letter answer to a 6-letter crossword puzzle clue, you can still use it, if you write small.

The song is OK, but I'd stop a few leagues short of 'classic'

Shields up !!!.........

I've heard this song and I must say that I don't care for it either. It's too touchy-feely. I'm glad others like it but it's not my bag.

Well, I like the touchy-feely sentiments, but I do have to say, after listening to it only a couple of times, yesterday, that it does not stick in my head the way some others have, touchy-feely or not.:-) I've got any number of Dave Carter songs rolling around in my head and, currently, a couple from your Out of the Rain tape, radriano, plus a few from derrymacash's tape. Still, I'll learn this one, too.

Rain away...we've got umbrellas!**BG**

thanks,

kat

Thanks for posting your opinions (both positive and negative)! I can definitely see where you might find the lyrics to be too "full". After reading your comments, I listened to it again, and I can see that it sure is a mouthful. However, I still really like the sentiment that she speaks of in the song and I enjoy the melody.
