So here we are in late 'summer' here in UK and there's still something I don't understand. Why do men (and some women) wear socks with sandals? Also what about tights with flip-flops!!

Please enlighten me. There seem to be an awful lot of 'em in the folk world!

Each to his/her own. Perhaps they have really manky feet, or verruccas? And the tights-ladies might have hairy legs. Or on the other hand perhaps they just feel like dressing that way. Sartorial perversity can be fun.

I had to visit a well known playwrite, now deceased, but then retired. I always wear sandals in summer if I can, and turned up in my sandals, and he apparently told his friends that he was very unsure of any professional wearing sandals "for god's sake". I dont like the ideas of going barefoot to attend the sick, especially as I was once subjected to a display of toe picking on a ward round by a casual doctor friend, and it made me feel awkward, let alone what it did to the patients, I wear socks with long trousers, and go barefoot in shorts, depending on whether I'm working or off duty. What on earth am I discussing this for???? Got to go -- better things to do.

I wear socks with sandals simply because they prevent chaffing just as they do in shoes. Can't imagine why anyone would care??? Now, pearls with jeans, that is another matter.

I sometimes wear socks with sandals. 2 reasons: Firstly, British weather being what it is, the summer is pretty short so I might spend 9/10 months of the year not in sandals. So when I start wearing sandals again my feet don't feel that comfortable in them to start with. So I wear socks. Secondly, in the evenings, when shoes + socks would be too hot for a whole evening but sandals would be too cold. If anyone has a problem with this, and I know lot's of people think they do, then I am just sad for you.

2 reasons.

1. Your feet can really get badly sunburned if you don't! Of course, if you went barefoot a lot, this wouldn't be a problem after awhile.

2. The feeling of your feet sticking to the soles of the sandals is quite annoying. When you wear socks that doesn't happen.

My wife always wears socks and sandals. The simple reason is that otherwise the sandals get all manky from the collected dead skin and sweat.

I wear sandles about 9-10 months out of the year, because I like the way they feel. I quit when the snow falls. My feet get cold in late fall and early spring, so I wear big hairy hiking socks with them. Don't like it? Don't look. My feet.

So do I, for comfort and to keep my toes warm in the early morning and evenings. In some places it is just expected that one wear socks with their Birks!**BG** I have lightweight ones for summer and heavier ones for winter.

My Birkenstocks are the most comfortable shoes I own and sometimes my feet get cold without socks. As for men, well, maybe the same reason.

My Birks are by far the most comfortable footwear I own. If I wear socks, I can extend the sandal wearing season significantly.

In WV in the summer it is not unusual to have very hot days and cold evenings and nights in the higher elevations (like Clifftop). I always keep a pair of socks handy for such a situation. Easier than carrying a spare pair of shoes.

If it gets too hot and dry and dusty in the summer, I will sometimes wear socks for comfort and a little protection. Hotter than sandals alone but cooler than shoes and socks.

I LIKE the look of sandals and socks. An acquired taste to be sure.

Sandals and socks send a message that I am happy to send. If my sandals and socks disturb you to the extent that you avoid me, that is a good thing. We probably don't want to know each other.

Another point; I had a friend who spilt some petrol near his feet and (like an idiot) was smoking at the time and dropped his fag. It all caught fire and melted the nylon socks to his feet and ankles. Yea he ended up in hospital looking as tho' he's been wearing shackles. Nutter or what?

I HATE SOCKS. I hate putting them back on when I'm back to work. They're itchy and scratchy and it feels like my feet can't breathe.

The only time I like wearing them is with my climbing boots but that's because my walking socks are nice and soft. Much too hot for everyday wear though. And of course, with suit, collar and tie, bare feet look a bit daft (although I have been told that I turn a pretty ankle, eh Sal!)

And I can't believe that I've been goaded by a lemonade seller of this parish into involving myself in this thread!

me, I got cheap sandals (can't afford Birkies for the small amount of sandal wearing I do) and delicate feet! I finally found some socks of a color that match my sandals and my ONE pair of summer shorts, and they don't look half bad!

As one currently suffering from a badly burnt calf as a result of wearing shorts and no socks with my sandals, I know why I generally wear shorts and socks. Why my feet did not burn as well, I don't know. [Yes, I did apply SPF 35 lotion. It failed me.]

I generally wear socks and sandals for the comfort. Now I will also wear them for the protection, even when I am in a canoe.

Trevor - You must be wearing the wrong material if they affect you that way. Socks with wool in them can be horribly uncomfortable for a lot of people. Try synthetic materials instead.

Then on the other hand, maybe you've just got hot or very sensitive feet.

And on a related matter…For the first time in decades, and in order to survive the continual heat waves this summer, my dearly beloved (who has been eligible for the senior discount since the mid-70s) has begun wearing shorts. His choice of footwear? Sneakers. His choice of hose? Black socks. We recently attended a function in which most of the men were similarly garbed. It was perfect! I mentally titled the scene "The Geezer Brigade At The Picnic." We have managed – only just – to evade the fashion police all summer. Wear your socks 'n' sandals proudly!

"Why do people not wear socks with sandals?" is an equally relevant and pointless question.

I'd like to assume in both cases the answer would be because it's more comfortable, and the climate - but I suspect that for a lot of people it's more to do with creating the right image. Go bare to look cool (as well as chilly), go clad to piss off the people who care about these things.

I tend to avoid socks because sandals do rather leak when you tread in a puddle and socks take much longer to dry than feet.

But I don't understand the idea that one wears socks so as not to chafe when wearing sandals. Buy the right sandals, and this need not be a worry.

When I portray an 18th/early 19th Century sailor, I wear a red knee hi sock on the left leg and a green sock on the right, in the tradition of Chesapeake Bay watermen (Port and Starboard socks, get it?). When I am doing a pirate, however, I reverse the colors, as pirates were known to reverse their running lights to confuse their prey. That way, you'll never know wheter I'm coming or going! (just like me!) I usually wear straight lasted shoes, but have been know to wear "Ghillies", a sandal like footwear implement popular amogst the Rennies.

Why does anyone wear sandals? Because they are cooler (thermically) than shoes. Sandals/Jandals/Thongs allow milk-white feet to sunburn. Ergo, if you don't wear sandals all the while, wear socks with them. You will also be allowed into establishments with a 'dress code.' Why does/did anyone EVER wear legwarmers??

Hello LH. Perhaps I have got sensitive feet. In fact they burst into tears at the slightest upset.

I remember having my feet massaged/mangled/tickled by a girlfriend who was a physio. She told me that my feet were 'very articulate'. Funny, 'cos I never heard them say a word.

And, Llanfair, I wondered about the blue toenails as well. I decided it was either because it was so blinkin' parky at Squilverfest, or because of Wimmin's Night at Sidmouth. Confirmation of one or the other would be appreciated, to put minds at rest.

When I lived in Australia I always wondered why Australian men invariably wore shorts, sandals and knee length socks, just showing about 4 inches of bare skin. After reading this thread, I've just discovered lots of reasons why!

I swore off panythose twenty years ago, and have been wearing legwarmers in the winter ever since. I have them in many colors, to complement my wardrobe. And they're SO much warmer than those !@##$ pantyhose. I am a legwarmer supporter!

My hubby has the ugliest feet (as does everyone in his family) and I don't let him wear sandals at all.

I have always wanted to know the answer to this thread but I would qualify it: Why do men wear dress socks with their sandals? I understand why you would wear ragg (cotton or wool) socks with your Birks and sport socks with active sandals and even white socks with fisherman's sandals, but those dress socks. ugh!

i used to wear sandals/sandles-are they the kind with handles? 9(portable?00)- but walking over wet grass then dusty streets then sweaty pub sessions made my dogs smell awful 9(even though it had no nose!- other peepol did]

these days what i find good for cool ft no pong is boat shoes with/without socks.

Mrs L in answer to your "why the blue toenails?" : you know who, told me the year before last, that the blue toenails started with a wedding in Australia, where several of the men on the groom's side had their toenails painted blue and he decided he rather liked it, & yes he did turn up for Sidmouth "wimmin's night" with them painted. Blue toenail's was then added to the list of fines that year.

I see I have a couple of brethren here.........I don't wear either....ever. I only wear socks when wearing boots (and those are boot socks) and I haven't had a pair of sandals since I was maybe 5. If I had a pair of sandals, I need socks to cover them up after I shit on them. Why buy part of a shoe? Generally you wear holes in shoes but with sandals they come that way! Go tell the store you want your money back. They're kinda' like those really popular "mule-style" tennis shoes without a back above the heel......Tell the store you got screwed and demand a refund.

Socks? I figure there are several billion mismatched ones in the world......many belonging to Karen and the kids........Why add to this tragic tale of abandonment and loss? Actually, I just hate the way they feel and I got out of the habit.

I don't wear socks with sandals, but I know folks that do for two reasons: gnarly toenails (fungus); and the sandals make their feet sweat a lot more without the wicking action of cotton socks and they smell bad!

And yeah, world catastrophe... I feel pretty much powerless about that. SO why not sock-talk?

Well I can give a technical answer to this. Till couple of years back I never wore socks with sandals, having read that this would make me sexually unattractive( I never actually did any serious research comparing success rate with or without socks, I just believed what I read).
   Anyway, then I decided to get involved in self-building a wooden house. Come the summer we were on teh woo work stage, and the big heavy stuff was done, so I ditched the steel-toed boots and moved into sandals. After on eday of walking about with sawdust between my bare feet and the sandal-soles, and with the cracks of my toes full of sweaty sawdust and opther detritus, I made the move to socks and sandals. And found them the ideal summer wear in conditions containing sawdust, sand, scattering grandpa's ashes, anthrax powder or anything similar.

I wear socks with my sandles, the reason is that I suffer from Tinnia, which is sweaty feet, and during the hot weather, my feet sweat a lot, and because of this the leather upper in the sandle would stick to my feet and thus make them sore, and that's the reason why I were socks in my sandles.

Another thing is why certain people wear jeans with laces, were the zip should be, I think that it looks silly, supponsing you were busting for the toilet or you suddenly had diarrreha, and you had to go to the toilet quick, if wearing jeans with a zip it would be easy and with a lace it's harder, to undo your jeans, it's the same with trousers or jeans with buttons.
I prefer zips on my trousers instead of buttons or Laces.

I tried wearing my sandals without socks the other day. The leather AND plasticcy bits stuck to my feet and they were uncomfortable to walk any distance in. With socks I can walk miles in 'em.

You've got to take 'em off, collect the load of washing together, shove 'em in the machine (unless you're doing it the old-fashioned way), remember (a)which programme to use and (b)to put the powder in, take 'em out, search for the missing one (see appropriate thread), hang 'em up to dry, take 'em down, match 'em up & shove 'em back in the drawer.

Or you could just swish your feet under the tap.

Why does no-one here admit it? This entire thread is full of excuses - worse, they're the sneaky snidey "I wasn't really looking, I just strayed onto the beach by accident" sort.

Socks n'sandals ought to be a Badge of Pride (esp with baggy-wrinkled 'Comic Scoutmaster' shorts.)
Advantages:
- Marks you out as a decrepit ole fart
- saves a lot of inane "getting to know you" chat
- stops women pestering you (useful in my case)
- keeps feet nice & cool after a summer shower
- advertises the fact that you probably sing shanties on an amateur basis

I never could understand the logic of this so I asked a male of my acquaintance why he wore sandals. His reply was that his feet got hot. When asked why he wore socks, his reply was that his feet got cold.

Men!!!

Personally, I wear sandals about 90% of the year - I've even been known to go out in snow and frost in sandals.... I guess I just have hot feet.

Have a couple of photos of my ex-pat days in Germany wearing Birks & a pair of thick, hand-knitted socks made by a girlfriend. Was all day on my feet & it sure felt good. When everybody else was grumbling about their feet hurting, I was still in good shape.
Sadly, the Birks are no more & have'nt been replaced- and the socks are well beyond the point of wearing anymore- doubt that 'look' will ever be duplicated.

I had a hip replacement four years back. I found that shoes restricted some movement when I walked. I wear sandals 100% of the time. When I teach, I have to 'dress' (normally, I'm a t-shirt, shorts and sandals kinda guy--mostly, I like to be comfortable (actually, I'm a natural slob)), so I wear black socks. Only time I wear shoes is for weddings, grads and funerals, and I wear boots for firefighting and rescue work.

To add a little historical corroboration, the wearing of socks with sandals goes back a long way. Take a look here at two gentlemen modelling a style of footwear found in the North Germanic peat bogs of the first few centuries A.D.: These gents have style !
You will see that even then, the wearing of leg and foot covering under the sandal was optional. But claim your heritage in full, 21st century gents, that's what I say !

The shoes in that photo Jeanie linked to certainly look like they might be the precursors of the tongueless wingtips the men at Scottish festivals wear along with their kilts.

By the way, if you didn't already know this, the holes in wingtips did once serve a function. They allowed water to drain out more quickly when one had to walk through water. In modern wingtip dress shoes the holes only go through one of two layers of leather, but they used to go all the way through.

Why not , I do wear socks and sandals all the time, besides there is a wonderful dress sandals ade by very well known designers so why not? out for dinner dressed in black trousers ,nice shirt and black socks with a paur of dress sandals look pretty cool. I think it depends much on the whole look of a man, some men look cool in sandals and socks others don't. I even was told by a babe thats it is a very manly look :) . Interesting thread... i'm glad i found it. Even though this thread is directed at men wearing socks with their sandals, I no longer feel like the sole fashion-offender (or offender-ette) for wearing socks with my Birkenstocks. :o) So comfy! I'm writing this while my feet are wrapped snuggly in my Birks for two reasons: 1) Its cold outside today 2) Even if it were sunny, my toenails aren't polished.

Further to this discussion I would like to add a few thoughts.

When I was visiting my mother, a brought along a friend who was wearing blue fingernail polish. Mom said, "Nice friend but I hate the nail polish." My friend said, "Wait til it starts chipping. Maybe she'll like that better."

Men should invest some money in a pedicure. Women like that. It looks like you actually take care of yourself.

Tevas are great for the summer. Saltwater doesn't hurt them and its much easier to get into the water when there are lots of rocks, oysters and barnacles. You can also walk comfortably in them.

Some guys who have bad-looking feet(esp. nail fungus or corns) want to cover them up, but wear sandals at the same time. But, I have nice-looking feet and I don't like to wear socks with sandals. Even with regular shoes (example: deck shoes), I like to go sockless! I give Ms. Lemon credit for wanting us men to be sockless when we are wearing sandals!

You have a legitimate point there, David, albeit expressed in a somewhat unorthodox manner. But I still think socks with sandals looks dumb. So, to make sure my toes stay nice and bacteria-free for sucking purposes, I wear condoms on them when I wear sandals. I prefer the brightly colored condoms. Different color for each toe. You can use kiddy balloons for the little toe if a condom is too big.

You could take your kilt socks off and wear sandals, even less hot that way. I just don't understand why you don't just wear sandals without socks. That's what I do whenever possible. I have been known to wear socks with sandals on very rare occasions, because I don't like shoes I tend to wear sandals as it starts getting too cold for them, and carry emergency socks in my backpack in case it turns out to be colder than I expected. But low 60s is plenty warm enough to wear them without socks. It hasn't been warm enough here in Edinburgh to wear sandals (or a t-shirt) since I got here *pout* Sometimes I wonder why I bothered to bring sandals with me. Probably because I didn't really beleive it could be this cold all the time.

I wear sandals all the time except when I'm in bunker gear and on the odd winter day when the snow is deep. After the hip replacement, I found that shoes forced my leg into an uncomfortable position and began to hurt my hip. I work in a school. It seems that women can walk around with their toes showing but not men. It is a form of discrimination (against men) with which I am not happy, and I will be contesting it in the beginning of the new school year. I'll let you know what happens.

Today I am wearing black socks with sandals. Dark green shorts and a green t-shirt. To enhance the look I have chosen to wear a blue jacket--bright, yet understated. It's a fashion statement for me. Yep. Besides, the only colour socks I own is black. That way I don't have to fart around trying to 'match' the correct colours. Wash 'em and put 'em on a shelf. Any two I grab will work as a pair. My Mom spent the growing up part of her life on a farm in South Carolina with her sharecropper Daddy and Mommy. They had an outhouse and a pump in 1950 thru 1955 when we used to go visit. Gramma used to walk out of the frontdoor, grab a couple chickens runnin' around, wring their necks, scald off the feathers, and cook 'em for dinner.

Did we EVER where shoes? No! Well, Sunday go to meetin' maybe. I don't remember tho.

Back up East, we wore shoes to school cause we had to. At home, never. Mommy always said the best thing for your feet was nothin'. Turned out later, she was right, with Earth shoes and all. I have perfect feet. Wide, but perfect with good strong arches.

Now, to the point. Since I've grown and the ways of the deep South aren't tolerated anymore (that in someways is real good), I'm forced to wear shoes. Most of the time I wear sandals, sans socks. As close to how I grew up as I can get. BTW, I never wear any kind of shoes at home. Only when I go out.

The concept of wearing socks AND sandals is just beyond me and it has nothing whatsoever to do with fashion.

NAKED FEET FOR AMERICA!!

Of course, during the sixties I developed the deepfelt concept of the "do your own thing", "to each his own", "whatever turns you on" type of thinking.

So, to those who wear socks with sandals, RIGHT ON!

well, I spent many years working in jobs where sandals and/or bare feet were either forbidden or downright dangerous! Consequently, I never developed the habit and calluses to go barefoot...nor did I ever need sandals much. But now, I find that my right foot seems to be getting sensitive in its (my) old age. So, I went out and bought TWO good pair of sandals last week, one open toe, one black pair closed toe which really looks quite good WITH socks....and besides, I just received 3 pair of socks with Tasmanian animals on them...and what better way to show them off!

I think men who wear socks with sandals, they have ugly feet... And when I say ugly, I mean, toenails that are not that attactive to look at, some men have a problem with toe fungus and have a toe fungus will totally mess up a man's toenails and feet if not cared for... And some men are just the kind of men who don't care for others seeing their feet at all.. As for myself, I love showing off my feet and wearing sandals in the summer time...

Well, I confess to this being my normal choice of footware, but only in the winter months, and only when wearing my Dr Martin boots seems a tad extravagent. Comfort's the thing here; comfort and convenience indeed, as with most things in life.

And since when were folkies ever so shallow as to be hung up on fashion? One would have thought the folk world the very (nay, perhaps the only) place a chap might wear scandals without drawing comment.

Its a man thing, wimp thing, and if you don't wear your warm socks you might catch a cold or worse - man 'flu.

Now why do women like sandals? they slip, slide and yet still people dance in them. Give me something that stays on the foot. Bugger fashion. Call me an engineer but even if they are red I prefer trainers - or Crocs at least. Function over form every time.

Well I remember breaking a foot bone polka-ing to Peeping Tom. Mind you I didn't feel a thing. It wasn't my foot. And I wasn't the one wearing inappropriate footwear that could slip half off an self-tighten in the process.

Just came back from the Auckland Folk Festival, where I wore socks and sandals all day.
The weather was superb, very hot sunshine. Too hot for shoes.
My feet are untanned, I wear boots to work.
I have had sunburned feet in the past, from wearing sandals on my lily-white plates, and besides the current wisdom of never getting sunburn because of possible future trouble, I couldn't then wear boots for several days, and so couldn't go to work.

As I pointed out way up there, James Bond sustituted sandals for shoes, -'his only concession to the heat'- in Jamaica, so who is the sophisticate who is more stylish than him?

Well, Bobad, I used to work with a guy who insisted on wearing boxers with shorts. Long-johns would have been prettier, really. Really. This was in the days of stubbies.
Sandals are cooler (thermally) than shoes, and sunburn on your feet is not to be recommmended. Also, socks make shoes that you are not used to wearing much more confortable.

Some years ago, a young lady commented rather unfavourably on my dress sense. I pointed out that I would not take sartorial advice from someone who wore leg-warmers.

Apart from anything else, it's a good way of showing off ones choice hosiery, such as the colourful sunflower socks my wife bought from Wallington Hall in Northunmberland one glorious spring day a few years back that turned out a bit nippy. I wear these as a matter of course now; in fact, I regard them as my lucky socks because every time I've worn them to a singaround, I ne'er forgot a word!

Pretty stupid question and a really simple answer? Cold feet. And what do you care. Are you part of TSA or some foot police organization. I used to wear wool sock with sandals. Remember the tire tread sandals? It was in Austria in the dead of winter, about 20 below. They ski pretty nicely as well. Here in northern CA in the early spring and late fall why not?. Of course you tuff guys (and gals) with hair on top of your feet probably don't have this problem.
So if you are so tuff, why are you wearing shoes or sandals at all? I suppose you want everybody to be just like you.

Before Cyclone Tracy hit Darwin you could always spot the blokes who were clerks (and even relatively senior) in the public service; they wore short sleeved shirts (usually sans tie and open necked), shorts and sandals with long white socks. In the tropics, this was acceptable work dress where some level of formality was required; sandals without socks was regarded as too informal.

When Darwin was rebuilt they decided to make it the capital city of the Northern Territory, which meant they had to 'lift their game' in the formality stakes. This gave rise to a situation where you could distinguish, from a distance, the seniority ranking of a male public servant. As in cooler climes, juniors share offices and, as they rise in seniority, have their own office which gradually increases in size of floor, desk, window(s) etc. Above one of the middle-ranking levels, one's seniority entitles one to an air-conditioned office. Tropical garb is comfortable when your office isn't air-conditioned but gets chilly if it is air-conditioned; in the latter case you must wear a suit which, by convention, is dark and worn with a tie and shoes.

But "professional formality" is preserved, among the lower classes, if one wears socks in one's sandals while at work in the tropical public service.

The good thing about not wearing socks is that when you step in a puddle your bare feet get dry a lot quicker than socks would. And the good thing about wearing socks is your feet stay warmer. So it all depends on where you are going to be doing your walking.

Of course, this is all to do with perception. We have all been told that wearing socks with sandals is un-cool and a fashion faux pas, but what about wearing socks with trainers( sports' shoes)? Curmudgeonly, though I've been called it to my face, doesn't do it. Churlish, yes; avaricious, no. Crabbed is closer, I tell myself, owning up to the perverse, sour part of its meaning. But the mot juste, that combination of consonants and vowels that fits like a glove and cuts like a knife is crotchety, as in, given to peculiar notions "on some (unimportant) point."

It doesn't surprise me. After a career spent as a fashion writer in the company of important handbags, you inevitably accrue a few of your own tics and conceits. Over-reaction lurks around every corner; your grasp of what matters may fray; you learn to beat your gums over nothing. Don't get me started on Michelle Obama's false eyelashes.

In short, you can go on long. And I have, all by way of saying that I hope it's not just me, all quaint quirks and dottiness, who thinks that blatantly age-ist remarks have become a tad common and sometimes even try to pass as cool. Now, I haven't lost my sense of humour completely. I laughed the other day--even felt the tickle of wanting to cheat--when the cashier in the subway booth offered me the seniors' fare. But when a bright, young fashion blogger the other day asked me what I remembered from the shows that Kate Aitken was putting on at the Canadian National Exhibition in the 1940s, I had to stamp my heels.

The urge to take up the umbrella to shake it with thin-skinned hands came over me again when reading interviews with "the boys" of Project Runway Canada, carried in the March 4 issue of Fab, reporting from the frontlines of the gay scene in Toronto. In response to the question, "What is the worst fashion mistake most men make?" Brandon Dwyer answers, "Clearly socks and sandals. If your feet are cold wear shoes. Sorry Grandpa."

But Grandpa's not taking the rap. I'll forgive Dwyer for knowing zip about Saint Laurent. When he admitted that on the show, the outrage among the judges stopped just short of throwing stones, and I-- feeling contrary, which is another shade in the sky at twilight--talked myself into thinking how fresh to be so unsaddled by history.

But just for the record, it should be pointed out that any blame you want to attach to giving socks and sandals a bad name goes to Greatgrandpa. Metallic sneakers over forty, that might well be an offense you can pin on the baby boomer. But it was also the boomer who broke socks and sandals from hold of the nerd and seaside vacationer and turned the look into a new proportion.

It was already back in the 1970s, a thick pair of work socks went well with those flat, buckle-strapped, brown leather sandals that Dr. Scholl used to put out or with fisherman's styles in plastic that downplayed the hippie-ish vibe which broke out again in the 1990s. In 1998, Narciso Rodriguez brought fuzzy hose and Birkenstocks to the runway in Milan.

And this revenge of the geezers lives on into this season. In the look book for the spring/summer collection designed by André Benjamin under the Benjamin Bixby label, socks and sandals are paired with aplomb.

That Benjamin. He's a smart child. He's the one who last year promoting his line in Britain, told The Observer, "My biggest inspiration is old people. Their style is not pretentious." I'm not sure certain about that. Nor am I sure of what's worse: a slight knowledge of history or a knowledge of slight history. Then again, if we must bear the burden of the past, might as well pack as light as possible.

Boy, is that the truth, gnu. I first encountered black flies when they bit through my knee socks somewhere in New Brunswick!

As for the socks with sandals: I'll bet their mothers told them "never wear shoes without socks!"

This is amusing. Like some, I wear birkies as long as possible even in Monteral and central Ontario; socks do help when the thermometer drops below 0 - in any language. But in the NW -TOO WET. Only cotton or wool and the texture has to be just right - Boy, do I have lots of socks, trying to find ones that are soft enough. NO synthetics.
