couldn't find if this song was already added or anything...so here goes....according to the Pogues site it is trad....but does anyone know the background to this song?

Kitty
Traditional

Oh Kitty, my darling, remember
That the doom will be mine if I stay
'Tis far better to part, though it's hard to
Than to rot in their prison away
'Tis far better to part, though it's hard to
Than to rot in their prison away

So softly he then kissed her pale lips
'Twas the same story over an o'er
Hush Mavourneen, the police are watching
And you know that I must go ashore
Hush Mavourneen, the police are watching
And you know that I must go ashore

In a day I'll be over the mountain
There'll be time enough left for to cry
So good night and God guard you forever
And write to me won't you, good bye
So good night and God guard you forever
And write to me won't you, good bye

I've added "Lyr Add" in the subject box.
It's posted HERE (Pogues: Kitty) too, but with no backgound info.

As I understand it this tells of a young rebel who is having to leave Ireland and his love to escape imprisonment by the English. He would hardly then be going 'ashore' as described in line four verse two. I think you will find that it should be 'a stor' which in gaelic translates to 'my love'. Certainly makes more sense.

We still haven't answered the origins question on this one. Ideas?

I have only ever heard The Pogues sing this , I recall Shane MacGowan say he learned it from his mother

There is a suggestion on www.poguetry.com/roses.htm that Kitty might be the Kathleen Mavourneen of 'Kathleen Mavouneen - A Memory of The Great Rebellion' by Randal McDonnel.
