Does anyone have the words to this song? I've only heard it once in a while & can't remember them all. I just remember at the end of the the verse the lyrics go

"I met a man along the road & asked for charity"

I know the melody well but don't know the words for the life of me.

Gordon Bok recorded the song on "Dear to Our Island." I don't have the lyrics though. (At least not at the moment.)

I think that this is a Dave Goulder song. I talked with him to-day at our local croftyers show, where he was doing a dry stone dyking expo.

Yes, it is a Dave Goulder song. I think it has also been recorded by Ann Dodson, and certainly by Dave himself (and also be me!). Unfortunately I have no time to post lyrics just now as I am setting out for Whitby and will not be back for a week .. . hope someone can help you out before then!

And a lovely road too. Sandwood bay is just north of Kinlochbervie, and for the sea fishermen amongst us it is a very good spot for Dabs. The coast from there down to Kyle of Localsh is dotted with lovely villages and towns. Kylesku, Scourie, Lochinver, Achiltibuie, Ullapool. Lovely bays like Gruinard Bay, and oh so many lovely little nooks and crannies. I have been driving the road from Ullapool to Tongue, via Durness, and back to Lairg evry day for the last week doing deliveries for my company. It was a double pleasure, as it got me out of the office, and away from those damned phones, as well as putting me among some of the most beautiful scenery in Scotland.

Thank you! I've loved that song ever since I heard Heidi Muller sing it on her CD Matters of the Heart. And I loved the time I spent in Scotland in my giddy youth as an archaeologist. I figured Kyle was Kyle of Lochalsh, but I couldn't find Sandwood on any of my maps. Now I know. Three cheers for mudcat.

Could I perhaps add to this correspondence, by mentioning that Dave did me the extraordinary honour of actually writing this song for me, in (if my memory serves me correctly) 1970. I should sing it more often. I was living in Whitley Bay at the time and I remember well receiving his letter which contained the words, "Your song is ready - when can you come and collect?". At that time, Dave was living in Glen Cottage, Glen Torridon, Wester Ross, where he was running a climbers' hostel. However, there are a few errors in the words which were supplied earlier in this exchange and as far as I can recall, a correct version is as follows:-

SANDWOOD DOWN TO KYLE (Dave Goulder)

One Monday morn as I went out

I met a man upon the road
And asked for charity.

Come home with me and take your fill

Your version is the one I remember when I first heard this song on an LP entitled "The January Man", many years ago.
'Sandwood Down to Kyle' was one of many fine, mostly traditional songs I enjoyed listening to on this album.
