Subject: RE: SONGS OF HAWAII From: Alice Date: 18 May 98 - 06:47 PM I can recommend a documentary video of dance and music, "Hula, the First 30 Years, Merrie Monarch Festival", ©1994, TAK Communications, Inc. Also, for a mix of songs in Hawaiian and songs in English, anything by Israel Kamakawiwo'ole or Ulewehi Guerrero. I especially like Israel. If your looking strictly for traditional (ancient) Hawaiian, a search on Hawaiian websites would probably yeild recordings. Alice |
Subject: RE: SONGS OF HAWAII From: Barry Finn Date: 18 May 98 - 07:37 PM Try the newsgroup (alt.music.hawaiian), you'll find plenty of good info. there. Also, depending on where you are, 'The Masters Of The Slack Key Guitar' do quit a bit of touring (they also sing), they are very traditional (no comment here), there are also songs of the cowboys (Panieolo, bad spelling), anything by any of the Beamer family would be great. The more English in the songs the more it's been watered down (it would not be the kind, or hapa holie - half white), until you get to Don Ho & his Tiny Bubbles. Barry |
