Subject: March from Oscar and Malvina From: Alice Date: 25 Aug 02 - 01:36 PM I have been searching for the notation for the March from Oscar and Malvina (recorded by the Cheiftains and Solas among others) and have not been able to find it. If anyone can email a gif to me I'd appreciate it. Any background info on the tune would also be appreciated. aliceflynn@montana.net |

Subject: RE: March from Oscar and Malvina From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 25 Aug 02 - 04:23 PM It isn't a song. It's an extract from the incidental music for William Shield's "pantomime" opera Oscar and Malvina, or The Hall of Fingal (1791). You can see sheet music at the Lester Levy Sheet Music Collection: Overture to Oscar and Malvina, with the Highland March and Battle Pieces in various forms "Composed by Mr. Reeve". Published Longman and Broderip, No.26 Cheapside and No.13 Haymarket, [London] n.d. I think you'll find the tune you want in there somewhere. According to The Fiddler's Companion, it's also known as Duplin House, Leslie's March or Lesley's March to Scotland and Blue Bonnets; under the last three titles you can find music in various formats at J C's Tunefinder. |

Subject: RE: March from Oscar and Malvina From: Alice Date: 25 Aug 02 - 10:05 PM In looking at the abc tunes versions derived from the Oscar and Malvina march, they are lacking elements that I really like about the composition. I found just what I was looking for in the old sheet music at the Levy site. |

Subject: RE: March from Oscar and Malvina From: GUEST Date: 26 Aug 02 - 12:56 AM The score at the Levy site is percisely that in 'Oscar and Malvina'. An older version, c 1742, "Lashly's {Lesley's] March" is given as an ABC in file T2.ABC at www.erols.com/olsonw. "Lesley's March to Longmaston Moor", song (incomplete) and tune, are given in vol. 1 of Hogg's 'Jacobite Relics', 1819.

Subject: RE: March from Oscar and Malvina From: EBarnacle1 Date: 26 Aug 02 - 01:40 PM I am so glad this turned out to be an opera! I had horrified thoughts of it being a collaboration between Oscar Brand and Malvina Reynolds. |
