Hi,

I was wondering if anyone out here had any advice on books that would teach music reading and basic fingering for the fiddle. I am particularlarly interested in the Cape Breaton Style of Fiddling. thanks andi

purobably Maestronet forum would be a good place to start as they claim - in my interest area they do - to have pro players on the board and lots of other experts.

I see you do not ask about bowing so I guess you already play, in which case a book would be fine to start with.

On the otherhand try Maestronet and ask there as well
Tonight it appears to be down - they had a moderator leave and that might be whats up.

Natalie McMaster also has a video. I'm sorry I don't know the exact name of it offhand, but you should be able to find it on the Net with a little bit of searching.

Natalie's video is aimed at people who already have the basics down, and want some specifics on the common Cape Breaton oramentations, such as she and her friends use a lot. It's available through her website http://www.nataliemacmaster.com/

Another place you might get information, including tune books is at Paul Cranford's site.

Id strongly suggest taking violin lessons. (you may even get a good deal from a music student) but its best to get personal instruction on holding the instrument properly - and basic fingering and bowing. You can get music books, but most of them assume a certain level of ability -. (I find that instruction books that come with cds or recordings are the best)

if you can find other people in your area who are intersted in playing fiddle music would be a good step too.(preferably - you want to play with people who are the same level as you or a little better) check out nearby (fiddle festivals) but most of all listen to recordings (as much as you can because written music will not convey stylistic information) petr
