Subject: Whippets and other Mutts From: JedMarum Date: 26 Aug 02 - 09:37 AM Any Mudcatter ever write songs about their dogs? My wife and I have a couple of Whippets who are just so much fun - and I have played, a few times - with writing a song for/about them - just never done it. |

Subject: RE: Whippets and other Mutts From: fogie Date: 27 Aug 02 - 06:31 AM Back in '86 my dog was killed outside my house, and I got into a reactive depression, and started writing gloomy lyrics, about things like the space shuttle explosion, linking them all together with my mood. I wouldn't dream of sharing them with anyone, far too personal. Still where would I be without old faithful to greet me when I come home? |
Subject: RE: Whippets and other Mutts From: open mike Date: 27 Aug 02 - 06:41 AM i have not written one, but just today i heard david wilcox's one about the block dog, and there is another one about "i want to be a dog" then it goes pant pant bark bark....and the one all god's critters got a place in the choir has a verse about the dogs and the cats taking up the middle....and of course there is old blue, you good dog you, and what others?? |
Subject: RE: Whippets and other Mutts From: GUEST,Bagpuss Date: 27 Aug 02 - 07:18 AM Not at all folky, but Gorky's Zygotic Mynci do a great song called Poodle Rockin' which is one of my favourite feel good songs of all time. Bagpuss |

Subject: RE: Whippets and other Mutts From: Dave Bryant Date: 28 Aug 02 - 04:34 AM Well, originally Les Barker used to include his dog Mrs Akroyd (now sadly deceased) in his act - I'm pretty sure he has some canine poems or songs. |
Subject: RE: Whippets and other Mutts From: catspaw49 Date: 28 Aug 02 - 08:34 AM Sorry Jed, never did it in the way you mean......I have some friends at a breed (I have two Weimaraners....I've had 8 of them) message board and we were discussing this to some extent. What I do and a lot of them do is make up songs we sing TO the dogs, mostly based on other songs. Of course it's kinda' hard to rhyme "Weimaraner" but someone had a cute one that started: "Nothin' could be finer Than to be a Weimaraner In the morning." Spaw |
Subject: RE: Whippets and other Mutts From: JedMarum Date: 28 Aug 02 - 09:36 AM funny Spaw - I sing to Maggie: You're not built for comfort but you're built for speed I don;t know what you want but I know what you need Maggie's a fine old, black Whippet who has recently stopped chasing the squirrels in the backyard (she's 15) but still looks like a young sleek speedster. I'm thinkin' an up tempo, finger picked Black Maggie's Blues sort of song would be just about right. |
Subject: RE: Whippets and other Mutts From: Metchosin Date: 28 Aug 02 - 10:22 AM My brother Russ, wrote a fiddle tune called March of the Dogs in honour of our dogs Butch, Maddy and Wort (and fine dogs they are too) that has a clip here |
Subject: RE: Whippets and other Mutts From: Uncle_DaveO Date: 28 Aug 02 - 10:45 AM A friend used to have an Afghan Hound. The dumbest creature on four legs. An animated fur rug. Could be a song there someplace. Dave Oesterreich |
Subject: RE: Whippets and other Mutts From: Nigel Parsons Date: 29 Aug 02 - 05:45 AM DavO: don't know about a song, but there's a series of childrens books about an Afghan hound, "Prince What-A-Mess" Nigel |
Subject: RE: Whippets and other Mutts From: catspaw49 Date: 29 Aug 02 - 10:52 AM One of my Weimie board friends had an Afghan and I think he'd prefer the name "Prince Dumber Than a Box of Rocks." Spaw |
Subject: RE: Whippets and other Mutts From: GUEST,Philippa Date: 05 May 05 - 07:22 AM i wrote Doggerel about the neighbourhood band that lies in wait to chase cars, vans and buses. I realised they were rebels with a cause. I think I posted it on Mudcat. My whippets have never chased cars, though they would be in danger of getting hit if they ran across the road in pursuit of another animal. Jed, have you any photos of your dogs on-line anywhere? |
