Iwould have put this in the Daintie Davie thread but this is a filerd site and as soon anything the machine decides is naughty goes on the thread becomes forbidden. - anyway.

I came across a reference the other night which stated that Burns used the original tune of Daintie Davie for his song Ther was a lad was born in Kyle, no more info so I don't know which of the tunes we have now is meant to be the original. But intrigued and as I play both tunes, I tried Daintie Davie to the Kyle tune and its really different, to me it changes the whole tone of the song but in a nice. Saying that I still love the Daintie Davie tune I'm used to.

Hi... yeah I usually sing "There was a Lad...." aka "Rantin Rovin' Robin" to the Dainty Davie tune.

The song as it stands is a bit much anyway, basically Burns is saying "what a crackin guy I am, sure I am?".. But the Dainty Davie tune does make it a bit gentler and more singable.

I just re-read your post and see what you were asking... the bouncy "Rantin Rovin Robin" tune was a later invention. The slower Dainty Davie air is the one to which he originally wrote "There was a lad...".
I'll see iof I can find out who wrote the newer tune for "There was a Lad"

Cheers

Steven

Sorry Steven. I'm rushing about here. Asking questions youve answered. I agree with what you say about the Burn's version. His my love shes but a lassie yet is another where the sentiments are a bit suspect Hogg's version is much sweeter.

Sorry I clicked too soon as I wasn't finished! As I was saying, burns knew O GIN YE WERE DEAD GUDEMAN as he supplied some lyrics to it for Johnson's Musical Museum, where his Rantin, Rovin.... song also appeared with the tune Dainty Davie. he must have preferred the tune of DD. Cheers, Jim Mclean
