Subject: RE: Tune Req: The Fisherman's Song / Fishermen's Song From: Catamariner Date: 17 Jan 21 - 10:29 PM argh. The changes are in the wrong places AGAIN. Sorry... can't do the typesetting. chords are on: storm shore woman stand[ing] spray jewels hair sea rocks des[olate] land[ing] though known there she down [con]demn ocean mur[derous] loss man boat out Wed[nesday] morn[ing] feared down hands I do like to go to the F rather than transition from the Am in the 2nd line of the chorus, but I am strumming and ymmv. Thanks for posting chords to start with! It's so beautiful and it should be done among friends, but is in copyright and of course not recorded without permission. |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: The Fisherman's Song / Fishermen's Song From: Catamariner Date: 17 Jan 21 - 10:12 PM I agree with 6/8. I'd like to offer some alternative chords since I just had to work this out to do it on a Zoom call tonight: [Am] [Em] [C] [Dm] By the storm torn shoreline a woman is standing, [Am] [Em] [Am] The spray strung like jewels in her hair. [Am] [Em] [C] [Dm] And the sea tore the rocks near that desolate landing, [Am] [C] [Dm]—[Am] As though it had known she stood there. CH: [Am] [Em] [C] [Dm] For she had come down to condemn that wild ocean [Am] [Em] [F] For the murderous loss of her man. [Am] [Em] [C] [Dm] His boat sailed out on Wednesday morning, [Am] [C] [Dm]—[Am] And it's feared she's gone down with all hands. and for the outro chords: [Dm][Am][Dm][Am] / [Dm][Am] [F] [G] [Am] alt:F-Em-Am fadeout Hope the spacing stays as put and doesn't go wonky. -- Heather |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: The Fisherman's Song / Fishermen's Song From: GUEST,zinglon Date: 18 May 12 - 07:46 AM this song is definately in 6/8 as silly wizard performs it, i learned it in 3/4 and the vocals never seemed to fit into that time sig with the ornaments, i would find myelf having akward timing between lines. when i switched to 6/8 however, everything fit perfectly. not to mention the fact that the 4th eighth note in the arpeggiated accompaniment is accented, definately seems like compound meter to me im glad i found out ive been inging the wrong lyrics o.o ("high on seas") ill definately change that in the future |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: The Fisherman's Song / Fishermen's S From: Charley Noble Date: 08 Aug 09 - 04:49 PM This thread is missing this final quip: All the shellbacks would be in shellshock! Oh, and the Silly Wizards' lyrics as posted contain this evident typo: "Where the songs of dead fathers" Cheerily, Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: The Fisherman's Song / Fishermen's Song From: Charley Noble Date: 17 Jan 08 - 09:54 PM Pleased to see that Silly Wizard corrected the lyrics from what were initially posted in this thread from their website. I still find it a powerful song, but difficult to find a place for in a set of sea songs. Just think of a set with "Fisherman's Song," "Lee Fore Brace." "The Final Trawl," and cheering everyone up with "The Mary Ellen Carter Rise Again." No, I think everyone would still be in shellshock. Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: John Allan Camerons 'Tie Me Down' From: Peace Date: 17 Jan 08 - 03:40 PM ^^^ The Fisherman's Song Silly Wizard By the storm-torn shoreline a woman is standing The spray strung like jewels in her hair And the sea tore the rocks near the desolate landing as though it had known she stood there. Chorus: For she had come down to condemn that wild ocean for the murderous loss of her man, His boat sailed out on Wednesday morning And it's feared it's gone down with all hands. Oh and white were the wave-caps And wild was their parting So fierce is the warring of love, But she prayed to the gods Both of men and of sailors Not to cast their cruel nets o'er her love. There's a school on the hill Where the songs of dead fathers Are led toward tempests and gales, Where their God-given wings Are clipped close to their bodies, And their eyes are bound-'round with ships' sails. What force leads a man To a life filled with danger High on seas or a mile underground? It's when need is his master And poverty's no stranger, And there's no other work to be found. from a Google of SILLY WIZARD LYRICS |
Subject: RE: The Fisherman's Song / Fishermen's Song From: Le Scaramouche Date: 21 Jun 05 - 05:56 PM I guess best way to settle it is to drop him a line and ask why he named the song that way. |
Subject: RE: The Fisherman's Song / Fishermen's Song From: Susanne (skw) Date: 21 Jun 05 - 05:45 PM I know the Ewan MacColl song under the title 'All the Week'. Still, it may have been the reason Andy M. Stewart gave his song a different title (which, according to his songbook, is 'Fishermen's Song'). |
Subject: RE: The Fisherman's Song / Fishermen's Song From: Le Scaramouche Date: 20 Jun 05 - 04:03 AM Do try and find Silly Wizard's. Nobody does poignant like Andy M. Stewart. I think they didn't want to call it the Fisherman's Wife because Ewan MacColl had already written a song about that. |
Subject: RE: The Fisherman's Song / Fishermen's Song From: GUEST,Kate McGuire Date: 19 Jun 05 - 10:10 PM I found it on an CD by the Minstrels of Mahem, a Rennasiance Fair group. They have a totally different arrangement than the original (they state that themselves). I don't know what the original sounds like but their arrangement is very poinant and powerful. www.Minstrelsof Mayhem.com in case any one wants to check their CDs out. They have some of the tightest harmony I have ever heard. |
Subject: RE: The Fisherman's Song / Fishermen's Song From: Charley Noble Date: 15 Dec 03 - 09:41 AM Makes more sense to me too, Kendall. SHE'S the one who is pissed but songwriters often are quite causual about naming their songs. Still, this is a fine song that more people should be singing. Cheerily, Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: The Fisherman,s Song From: Charley Noble Date: 14 Dec 03 - 12:21 PM Kendall Morse sings this song but was uncertain of its origin as we were discussing it the other night at the Press Room. I had first heard sung by Teresa Morgan on a Victory Sings at Sea CD (VMRCD-503, © 1989) where the words and music are attributed to Andy M. Stewart. The last verse of the song posted above appears to be missing a line and differs in wording according to the Victory lyrics text which runs: What force leads a man to a life filled with danger HIGH on seas or a mile underground, IT'S when need is his master and poverty's no stranger AND THERE'S NO OTHER WORK TO BE FOUND.
