(Preliminary BS: I'll be on vacation from August 31-September 9. Not going anywhere, but have many projects to work on at home! Any PMs and e-mails will be answered after that. Thanks.)

So what's everyone learning these days? I am finally getting around to learning Leatherbritches on the fiddle, as well as The White Cockade and Sir Roger de Coverley. For singing, I am working on The Wind and Rain; and very soon (probably on my vacation) I'm going to start on Es ist ein Ros entsprungen - in German. If I start now I'll have it ready for Christmas!

Have also written a few new things.

How 'bout y'all?

I'm looking for something new to sing - dark and gloomy ballads, things with lots of magic/weirdness/death - any suggestions welcome. I'm looking for material that will be challenging musically as well. (cos I'm a masochist.)

I haven't managed to write a song in nearly a year - I did come up with something for Halloween, last year, but haven't managed anythnig since. I shall put this down to being distracted by pregnancy, but i should get my bum into gear and try writing something.

Wind and Rain is pretty good for that - the one sister kills the other sister (over a man, naturally) by pushing her into the river. She washes up on the river bank, then along comes a fiddler and builds a violin out of her bones, and strings the bow with her hair.

"But the only tune that fiddle would play
Was oh, the dreadful wind and rain..."

Gillian Welch does a nice version on the first Songcatcher CD. It's not what I would call musically challenging, really, but it sounds good. :-)

My latest two are "The Orchard" and "Icarus" and I'm also working on "Moreton Bay" (version sent to me by Bob Bolton). Probably the big mistake I made in the past was choosing material that didn't suit my range and voice and I'm trying to put that right now. Have a couple of my own on the brew too.

Best regards,

mooman

Amos, Night Rider's Lament is one of my very favorite songs. I never get tired of singing it.

Hecate - there's like, twenty bajillion versions of that song! I have read that it's existed in one form or another since the 1600s. Sometimes it's a harper, and sometimes it's a fiddler. The folk process at work!

I been trying to hammer out a few new tunes, got 'Sweet Tequila Blues' on the brain at the moment, keep hearing it on the radio, and it kinda stuck. Driving my pardner mad with it because we're stuck in a van together and he can't get away.

He's just lucky I can't get the keyboard in here.

Oh, Willy's "Drummer and Me" and Towne's "Many a Fair Lady" are recent additions. FWIW.

I've been working on Pancho and Lefty, and (gulp) Eagles' Lyin' Eyes. And, after only hearing it for 45 years, Ghost Riders in the Sky...shades of the 50's/60's thread!
