I've been telling Glen about Mudcat for a number of years, and about the fact that his name, (as a composer and luthier) pops up every so often. Well it seems he's taken the plunge. Despite his thread about The Four Lads, he's one of the folkiest guys I know. Lives wayyyyy up north in Ontario, back in the woods near the town of Burk's Falls. I met him thirty plus years ago, we did a lot of pickin' together, and both of us played in a lot of Irish bands (we're not Irish...just knew the songs)

Welcome Glen, Mudcat's been a real treat for me over the last four years. I've made some wonderful really close friends here, and even the few nutbars can be entertaining if ya don't take them seriously.

A final note...Glen's a fine 'crosspicker'.

Cheers

Rick

Welcome, Glen. We haven't met, but we've corresponded a few times. I usually get to the Burk's Falls area (Kearney, in fact) every second summer, but I've missed two years in a row now. Planning on next year, finances permitting. Perhaps we'll have a chance to meet.

Welcome Glen! I have noticed you around here. It was good to meet you when I was in Toronto, and it's good to see you at Mudcat!

Actually, I should have clarified that "played with Irish bands thing". Glen actually spent a few years with Brannigan's Boys, I "had a cup of coffee" with a LOT of bands, as a temporary fill in. I DID however affect an Irish accent occasionally!

Cheers

Rick

Hey, Glen, welcome aboard. And as far as I'm concerned you crosspickers are okay with me long as you keep that stuff to your selves. (Jus funnin'. Don't mind me. Heck, no one else does...)

Just heard from Glen that he has joined the Mudcat. He will be a great addition. A good musician, a good songwriter and a maker of fine instruments. Welcome aboard mate. Just don't believe what he may tell you about the old days with Brannigan.

Jimmy,Brannigan aka Joe Gogarty,John Devlin and Glen Reid, were the epitomy of good taste and vocal stylings.Pease do not besmirch their,so far unblemished reputation with unfounded rumours of debauchery and unprintable lyrics.ljc

Do you know a fellow named Fielding?
Welcome, Glen. Somewhere, I picked up a Glen Reid CD, and I really like it.

Hi, Glen: I've posted on the Four Lads thread and consider myself a friend of Rick Fielding's. What more credentials could anyone have? I get cross when I try to flatpick. I assume that's not what you're talking about. :-)

I'm also glad to bring attention to the fact that the Four Lads, The Crew Cuts and the Diamonds were all from Canada... some of my teenage idols. It helps to offset the fact that Celine Dione is from up your way, too.

And don't forget Rick Fielding!

Jerry

Hi Glen!

You won't likely recall showing me an instrument or two of yours at the Collingwood Celtic Continuum several years ago, but we shared some stories, tried some guitars, and shook hands.

Every year I have to wander up to the Sprucedale area, maybe I'll go a little further and see you next time.

Welcome aboard the good ship Mudcat!

Peace, Mooh (aka Mike Crocker).

Well, when is he gonna post to his own honourary thread?

Hey Glen, howdy. I've got an old Regal Octophone in need of restoration--Rick mentioned to me that you'd patterned some instruments on the Octophone design, I did notice the similarity of the one on his wall. It has some cracks in the back and the neck is kind of munged up, and a little bowed. Ever done major work on one?

Hi Folks, Many thanks to my old pal Rick Fielding for his kindly introduction to Mudcat and thanks also to Jimmy C (Jimmy Cushnan, formerly of the Tinkers), of days gone by, for his duplicate welcome.

Some of you I know through my travels over the years, like that "wee highland laddie" hisself, Lil' John Cameron.Sure dont seem like 30 years. Hi Jerry Rasmussen, we met a few years ago at Sandy Hook Conn.when I was down helping out on Rick's first CD "Lifeline" recorded at Sandy and Caroline Paton's Folk Legacy Studios. Had the pleasure of meeting Jeri, at Rick's little backyard garden party a couple of months ago. Havent seen John "Leeder" since you were at Kearney, and I think you were visiting Hilda Allen.Hi to Mike Crocker "Mooh" and yes I do remember meeting you at Stephen Charles's " Collingwood Celtic Continuum" as I recall, we talked "Mando-thingies" Also a thankyou to my new Mudcat friend Jean Ritchie "Kytrad" Hope you liked my version of that wonderfull song you wrote "The L&N". For those of you that I havent formerly met, but took the time to welcome me,I say thank you all and hopefully someday we can meet in person. I am starting to recognize a good few of the names and feel a kinship with all of the folks who are "MUDCAT".

Thankyou, and all the best, Glen

My parents used to live in Kearney, in our winterized summer cottage (since sold). Hilda Allen was one of the music group which my dad had a hand in founding. We still get in on their sessions when we're in the area -- not as often, any more, but I was back briefly for my aunt's funeral in July. My sister used to live in North Bay, within striking distance, but she just got ordained as an Anglican deacon and took up a charge on Manitoulin Island, so we have one less nearby relative. My other sister is in Haliburton County.

But I should be PMing all this stuff which is of no interest to anybody but us (or maybe just *me*...).

Leeder,

Small world. My family and I were touring Manitoulin again last month and as usual wandered into every Anglican church we stumbled upon. So, where's your sister exactly? It's a lovely corner of the world!

Peace, Mooh.

My sister's based in Gore Bay, also has churches in Kagawong and (during the summer) Silver Water. She took up the charge at the beginning of August -- new profession, new location (although she's a Northerner, having spent most of her adult life in North Bay, and most of her summers in Kearney before that, so she's used to Northern Ontario ways). Beth Topps is her name -- I'm not sure if deacons get styled "Rev." or not.

How about that, we visited both Gore Bay and Kagawong last month, and I think my wife commented that the rector was a woman (a trend we appreciate). If she's on "the list", an Anglican discussion forum, she'll be acquainted with lots of folks we know, including my mother.

The world gets smaller all the time.

Anyway, we can move this to personal message land anytime.

Peace, Mooh.
