I am on my way to Italy and I was wondering if there is folk music that might be available in a public venue. I will be traveling throughout the country so please do not restrict your information. Thanks!

Ellen

Renzo Arbore and L"Orchestra Italiano keep the Neopolitan songs alive--and the old singing and instrumental styles alive, as well--they are very popular, and can be very amusing, as well--

I will be in Italy next week - but I can't promise any folk music. At the event we visit in Udine, they DID have some Italian bagpipers last year though (picture on my web site www.greenhedges.com)

Very nice music on your site, pavane. Dawne does indeed has a lovely voice, very sensual tonal quality. So next week I'll be in Italy also. What is the event in Udine?

Paliodonna di Udine. Traditional bareback horserace. Palio races are held throughout Italy, but the one in Udine is the ONLY one for female riders. It is much more genteel than the famous one in Siena.

It is also a festival of arts, and the first few times we went there was traditional music and dance from various countries. We performed on the main stage as a duo called Pavane - which is where I got my Mudcat name.

Last year, my daughter was one of the riders, and won her race - pictures on the web site. Takes a lot to race thoroughbreds bareback!

Due to financial constraints, the event is much smaller this year, just two days instead of 4, so it will be held on Sat 7th and Sunday 8th.

Unfortunately, most peoples knowledge of Italian folk music is limited to The Neapolitan Tarantella. Come on all you Italian Mudders out there, we need to be educated.

Italian folk music differs very much from zone to zone, especially from north and south.Bert is right,Italian folk isn't limited to Neapolitan Tarantella. In the north we most have ballads, not very different from the north western Europe tradition in setting and subject. The music of Piedmont is very akin to french (South of France especially) music, with a slight (sometimes not so slight)celtic undertone.

"The folk songs of the Piedmontese tradition are severe and sad, more narrative than lyric and often draw on historical events; dance tunes are cheerful and quick. The traditional musical instruments are the hurdy-gurdy, the accordion, the bagpipe, the mandola, the violin, several plucked instruments as well as a lot of flutes."

That sums pretty well the kind of music we do. http://www.worldmusicportal.com/Festivals/italy.htm

Cool! I hope to be moving to Italy next year. If my plans all work out I'll be living in Vicenza. I hope this thread grows some legs.

Last June I met Beppe Gambetta at Old Songs. He told me of an Italian web site that compares to (he said) Andy's Front Hall. He gave me the address and I looked it up. It has plenty of music on it. Unfortunately I do not have the address here on this computer. It may be at home. Let me check there and I will post it here tomorrow.
