You guys ain't heard nothin'! I got a phone call yesterday from 'someone' with a very thick African accent....he mumbled something about a 'cashier's check' and 'prize' and asked me something, all the while assuring me that his was a 'reputable company'.
When I allowed as how I had entered no contest and was sure I had one no prizes, he asked "How you think then I have your name & phone #?"
I laughed and told him how people get such names...and I hung up on him. So help me, he called BACK! He could not believe I didn't want my prize! I still could barely understand him, and said that IF there was someone who spoke better English at his "company", they should call.
So help me, someone with a 'slightly' better Nigerian-sounding accent called back! I asked him what this was...he said I had indeed won this money, and would I be home today so "his boys" could deliver my check.
I asked how much the check was for and where HE was..........."California" and "$87,000".... I explained that *I* wasn't born yesterday and that NO ONE would be offering me $87,000 using a company staffed by people who spoke bad English and calling from California....I finally told him *I* was hanging up, and they were NOT to call me back!

In the hour afterward, I thought of 3-4 things I should have done...including saying "come on over" and having the police waiting....

Here's one that ties the FBI and Africa:

Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)
Anti-Terrorist And Monitory Crime Division.
Federal Bureau Of Investigation.
J.Edgar.Hoover Building Washington Dc
Customers Service Hours / Monday To Saturday
Office Hours Monday to Saturday:

Dear Beneficiary,

Series of meetings have been held over the past 7 months with the secretary general of the United Nations Organization. This ended 3 days ago. It is obvious that you have not received your fund which is to the tune of $850,000.00 due to past corrupt Governmental Officials who almost held the fund to themselves for their selfish reason and some individuals who have taken advantage of your fund all in an attempt to swindle your funds which has led to so many losses from your end and unnecessary delay in the receipt.

The National Central Bureau of Interpol enhanced by the United Nations and Federal Bureau of Investigation have successfully passed a mandate to the current president of Nigeria his Excellency President Good luck Jonathan to boost the exercise of clearing all foreign debts owed to you and other individuals and organizations who have been found not to have receive their Contract Sum, Lottery/Gambling, Inheritance and the likes. Now how would you like to receive your payment? Because we have two method of payment which is by Check or by ATM card?

ATM Card: We will be issuing you a custom pin based ATM card which you will use to withdraw up to $3,000 per day from any ATM machine that has the Master Card Logo on it and the card have to be renewed in 4 years time which is 2015. Also with the ATM card you will be able to transfer your funds to your local bank account. The ATM card comes with a handbook or manual to enlighten you about how to use it. Even if you do not have a bank account.

Check: To be deposited in your bank for it to be cleared within three working days. Your payment would be sent to you via any of your preferred option and would be mailed to you via UPS. Because we have signed a contract with UPS which should expire by April 15 2011 you will only need to pay $135 instead of $420 saving you $285 So if you pay before April 15 2011 you save $285 Take note that anyone asking you for some kind of money above the usual fee is definitely a fraudsters and you will have to stop communication with every other person if you have been in contact with any. Also remember that all you will ever have to spend is $135.00 nothing more! Nothing less! And we guarantee the receipt of your fund to be successfully delivered to you within the next 24hrs after the receipt of payment has been confirmed.

Below are few list of tracking numbers you can track from UPS website to confirm people like you who have received their payment successfully.

Name: Donna L. Vargas: UPS Tracking Number: 1Z757F991598420403 (www.ups.com)
Name: Rovenda Elaine Clayton: UPS Tracking Number: 1Z757F991596606592 (www.ups.com)

Note: Everything has been taken care of by the Federal Government of Nigeria, The United Nation and also the FBI and including taxes, custom paper and clearance duty so all you will ever need to pay is $135.

DO NOT SEND MONEY TO ANYONE UNTIL YOU READ THIS: The actual fees for shipping your ATM card is $420 but because UPS have temporarily discontinued the C.O.D which gives you the chance to pay when package is delivered for international shipping We had to sign contract with them for bulk shipping which makes the fees reduce from the actual fee of $420 to $135 nothing more and no hidden fees of any sort!

On the site 419 scam eaters, they show many photographs of (presumably) Nigerians holding strange and sometimes obscene signs. They were persuaded to have these pictures taken in order to further the scam being perpetrated. One I saw for instance was photographed with a pineapple on his head, others hold placards with unpleasant things writen on in heavy type. What people here in the West don't realise is that these unfortunate folk are NOT the scammers, they are paid a few pennies to do this by the real scammer, who would never risk his identity to be revealed in a photo. I find it pitiable to see the innocent and uncomprehending expressions on their faces. Some are merely children. They have no idea the person paying them to have their picture taken is a crook. I find it very sad that 'scammer baiters' get pleasure from these 'trophy photos' as they are called. One has only to delete the spam and leave it at that.

I don't believe I've seen this one before:

HELLO

I am writing to confirm the fact if you are DEAD or ALIVE and failure to reply back in the next 24hrs simply means what Rev Patrick Larry said on 24/01/2011 was right that you are dead. Have been keeping an account of offers recieved....I'm up to nearly $500,000,000 so far, and there have been at least 40 air disasters in Birkina Faso in the last 6 months...(sounds like a dangerous place to be!)
It's actually becoming dull deleting them now.
For more fun, I would recommend "419 eater" website. for some wonderful stories.
One of my favourites is the Scammer who was persuaded to hand write 250 pages of a Harry Potter book for some specious survey in the hopes of getting cash!
A very enjoyable read!

I think that this is probably a new twist:

I've been receiving emails from a Mrs Joan Smith (not exactly her name - but I've deleted all the examples). She has been contacting me from her hospital bed (visions of pale, frail old lady, propped up on pillows and stabbing feebly at the keyboard of a wi-fi enabled laptop). She wishes me to get in touch with her solicitor - email address supplied. Presumably, if I did this, I would learn that she is very ill and is near to death's door - and she has decided to include me in her will (yes, me! Of all the people in the world who she could have chosen!). Her "solicitor" would then ask me for my address, phone number and bank account details so that he can make all the necessary arrangements when the sad day inevitably arrives ...

Hey! It might just be true! I think I'll try it. What have I possibly got to lose ... ?

I'm dying of the incurable disease Scamitis nigeriensis, so my multitrillion-dollar fortune doesn't do me much good now. However, since I have given my heart to the Lord, I am filled with this warm, fuzzy feeling that I should share the wealth. I will therefore divide the wealth evenly between the first 1000 people who respond with their full names, Social Security numbers, and all their bank account and credit card numbers (expiration dates and security codes too, please).

Then u can hasz cheezburger! kthxbai!

Here's today's:

Dear Friend,

I am MR.Paul Dike, Bank Manager of a reputable bank in lagos, abi Province, and Republic of Nigeria. I have an urgent and very confidential business proposition for you.On feb 27, 2001,a British Oil Consultant/contractor with the Nigerian Mining Corporation, (Name deliberately with held) made a numbered time (Fixed)Deposit for twelve calendar months, valued at US$20,000,000.00 (Twenty Million Dollars) in my branch. Upon maturity, I sent a routine notification to his forwarding address but got no reply. After a month, we sent a reminder and finally we discovered from his contract employers, the Nigerian Mining Corporation, that the depositor died from an automobile accident. On further investigation, I found out that he died without making a WILL, and all attempts to trace his next of kin was fruitless.I therefore made further investigation and discovered that the depositor did not declare any kin or relations in all his official documents, US$20,000,000.00 is still sitting in my Bank and the interest is being rolled over with the principal sum at the end of each year. No one will ever come forward to claim it.

According to Laws of Nigeria,at the expiration of 7(seven) years, the money will revert to the ownership of the Nigerian Government if nobody applies to claim the fund.Consequently, my proposal is that I will like you as a foreigner to stand in as THE NEXT OF KIN to the depositor so that the fruits of this old man's labour will not get into the hands of some corrupt government officials. This is simple, I will like you to provide immediately your full names and address so that the attorney will prepare the Necessary documents and affidavits that will put you in place as the next of kin.We shall employ the services of an attorney for drafting and notarisation of the WILL and to obtain the necessary documents and letter of probate/administration in your favour for the transfer.

A bank account in any part of the world that you will provide will then facilitate the transfer of this money to you as the beneficiary/next of kin.The money will be paid into your account for us to share in the ratio of 65% for me and 35% for you. There is no risk at all as all the paperwork for this transaction will be done by the attorney and my position as the Branch Manager guarantees the successful execution of this transaction. If you are interested, please reply immediately via the private email address .Upon your response, I shall then provide you with more details and relevant documents that will help you understand the transaction. Please send me your confidential telephone and fax numbers for easy communication.

Also,Please observe utmost confidentiality, and be rest assured that this transaction would be most profitable for both of us because I shall require your assistance to invest my share in your country. Awaiting your urgent reply via my email address.

Regards.

MR.Paul Dike.

Following the un-paid legal funds investigation carried out by this office, it was discovered that you have not received your total legal funds for a while now even as you had tried in several ways and have spent countless money on several fees on pursuit of this project which now seems to you as an endless race.

I bet you didn't know they knew you'd tried to get your money! Did you ask if they are going to also give you the amount of money you spent in this effort?

Here's today's:

"Dearest One

I am Mrs.Rose Kablan from Kuwait.I am married to late Mr Abraham Kablan, who worked with Kuwait Embassy in Ivory Coast for Twenty-Six years before he died in the year 2001,after a brief illness that lasted for only five days.

We were married for Eighteen years with a daughter (Lilian)who later died in a motor accident. Before the untimely death of my husband,we were both born again Christians. Since after his death I decided not to remarry or get a child outside my matrimonial home which the Bible is against. When my late husband
was alive he deposited the sum of (US$2.5M )(two Million, five hundred Thousand United States Dollars) in a General Trust Account with a prime bank in
Abidjan Cote d'Ivoire.

Presently, this money is still with the bank. Recently,Following my ill health, my Doctor told me that I may not last for the next eight months due to my cancer problem. The one that disturbs me most is my stroke sickness.
Having known my condition I decided to donate this fund to an individual or organization that will utilize this money the way I am going to instruct
herein, according to the desire of my late husband before his death.

I want this fund to be used in Activities like,Orphanages, Christain schools, and church for propagating the word of God . I took this decision because I don't have any child that will inherit this money and my husband relatives are unbelievers.
and I don't want my husband's efforts to be used by unbelievers.

Our local paper just reported that someone in our immediate area actually sent $500.00 to pay the taxes so that the first payment of his multi-millions in lottery winnings could be released. He got suspicious when he promptly got a request for an additional $300.00. He was identified only as to his age, 52, so there's little chance that his problem is senility.

Hi Gurney
Guess we're a little off topic re pronunciations but I did qualify my last with the remark about one's own locality and local dialect.
Unfortunately in UK the schoolteachers no longer teach the rules of grammar, it being considered necessary only to be expressive! Hence we have the apalling use of English to be seen today. This seems to be compounded be the Spellcheckers on computers which are unable to distinguish between words of same sound but different spelling and meaning.
It is nice to find someone else who has an interest in the correct use of language.
LOL
Colyn.

Bonecrusher, I was taught to sound my aitches. All of them.
Mind you, in those days, you didn't question authority. If teacher said it, it was true.
Here in NZ our newsreaders seem to take delight in saying 'an horrific accident' or 'an historical occasion' which jars me because they DO sound the aitch.
Did you know that the editor of the Oxford for many years (if memory serves) was a Kiwi? Perhaps he was trying a covering move.
Don't believe there should be such a thing as a silent aitch, otherwise we would all be saying "an our an' an arf" and then we wouldn't be able to tell Londoners from people.
Why isn't there an H in aitch?

Story from Derek Brimstone.

"'Ow do you spell 'orse?"
"It's not 'orse, James, it's Horse!"
"I SAID, 'ow do you spell 'ORSE!"
"I've told you, James, it isn't 'orse, it's HORSE!"

"I've already got the H down."

Gurney's comment about literacy is, I think, a little off the mark.

"If that famous man was slightly more literate, he would have said 'You can't cheat A honest man.."
Sorry, Rapaire, you just triggered one of my fetishes."

In the days of my youth, when English Language was taught as a school subject together with the rules and exceptions to those rules, the above comment would have been correct.
As the "h" in the word honest is silent, then the word is pronounced "onest". As such the word purports to begin with a vowel, necessitating the longer adjective "an" rather than "a".
Oxford English Dictionary is quite clear:
a, an - adjective. Before all consonants except silent H use "a"; "a" history, "a" historian, but "an" hour.
However, on reflection it may, of course, depend upon from whence one originates and the local dialect.
LOL
Colyn.

As a famous man once said, "You can't cheat an honest man." Most Nigerians are honest, just as most Americans, South Africans, Iragis, Dutch, and British are.

What makes you think they are necessarily scams just to get you to divulge your bank details? The first one you get is to get up your nose so you reply with dire invective. They know you exist.
Like the old WW1 trenches joke of Tommy Atkins shouting "Fritz" across the divide and when "Fritz" (there must be one) looks over the parapet & shouts "are you calling me?" Tommy fires in that direction. There's more to the joke but I will spare you that.

A recent grin from a friend along the lines of SlowAllan's hopefully fictitious tale:

I went to the store the other day, I was only in there for about 5
minutes and when I came out there was a damn motorcycle cop writing a
parking ticket. So I went up to him and said, 'Come on buddy, how about
giving a guy a break?' He ignored me and continued writing the
ticket. So I called him a pencil necked nazi. He glared at me and started writing
another ticket for having bald tires!! So I called him a son of a
mutant pig. He finished the second ticket and put it on the car with the
first. Then he started writing a third ticket!! This went on for about 20
minutes, the more I abused him, the more tickets he wrote.

I didn't give a damn. My car was parked around the corner...

Have yourself a great weekend, one and all.

             STRICTLY CONFIDENTIAL

My Dear Friend,

First i must solicit for your srictest confidence in this transaction and I pray that my decision to contact you will be given genuine approval considering the fact that we have not know each other before.

I wish to use this opportunity to introduce myself to you, I am Mrs Mary Iddo Sankoh, the wiife of the former minister of Diamond Mining Corporation in my country,My husband had a bullet shot by the rebels on his way travelling to Lusia a city after Freetown the capital along with my daughter, My daughter died on the spot while the U N peace keeping force rescued my Husband, he was taken to hospital for medical treatment which he later died about three months now.

Fortunately, my Husband has Ten million andFive hundred thousand United States Dollars(US$10.5million) cash, which he intended to use for investment purposes overseas. This money is kept with private security company here since two years ago. It is only my son and myself that know where the money is kept and has the documents for it.

Due to the current situation in the country concerning government‚s vendettas towards my family, we seek your assistance to transfer the ownership of this fund to you so that you can asisst us to claim it and use for the purpose of investment as intended by my husband. My family is currently being probed by this present government for alleged involvement in misappropriation
of public funds during his regime.

Towards this effect, an embargo restricting my family members from traveling or carrying out financial transactions without their express permission is in force. Right now, my son and myself have concluded plans and decided to to take immediate claim of this fund so that we can use it to better our lives and alliviate our present suffering hence this contact.

However, I have an arrangement on how you can help us to recieve this money after receiving some assurances from you. The money personally belongs to my husband and he intended that it still be used for investment. No record ever existed concerning this money, neither is the money traceable by the government because there is no documentation concerning the funds in the Federal
Treasury. We have concluded plans with the security company to transfer this consignment to their affiliate agencies outside this country to make it easier for you to recieve this on our behalf.I shall brief you in full once i hear from you on the detailed procedures for this project.

Bearing in mind that your assistance is needed to transfer this fund, we propose a commission of 20%(Twenty Percent) of the total sum to you for the expected services and assistance. While 5% is mapped out for miscellaneous expenses.

On your positive consent, I shall expect you to contact me urgently to enable us discuss about
this.Your urgent response is highly needed. I must use this opportunity to implore you to exercise utmost indulgence to keep this matter extraordinarily confidential, while I await your prompt response.

Best regards,

But why are these letters all written by illiterate scam artists? Do they not think it might help if there weren't fifty grammatical errors? Perhaps the only folks who DO respond (and sadly there must be thousands of poor souls who willingly donate their e-mail addresses to the scam pool) aren't capable of noticing the bad grammar.

I have a friend who always responds to spam, because he thinks he's "tellin' them a thing or two". Naturally he now spends most of his waking hours on his rapidly expanding spam pile. Verrrrry strange.

I figure the best way to make money is write a book called "How To Make 20 Million Dollars In ONE YEAR", get a really good cover design for it, get a couple of celebrity endorsements (like Danny De Vito and Oprah Winfrey), fill it full of supposedly useful information, get published, then sit back and cash in! Greed feeds greed. Isn't useless capitalism glorious? Meanwhile there are things which actually need to get done, like growing food, healing the sick, educating people, and so on, but we'll just let someone else deal with it and buy it from them after we're rich.

You can order a P.H.D. off the internet too. I think I'll go for one in Paleontology...it sounds so distinguished.

Surely they are all the same in essence
"give us your bank/credit card details"
or is someone compiling a "son of Child" book on all the variations of: "dead in plain crash", Ken Sarewewa's widow, Nigerian Dam project. Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Chad, (any more).

Cheers Larry
FROM: JOHN DUKE.

SIR/ MADAM

I am DR JOHN DUKE, working with Union Bank Plc. Nigeria. There is one Captain Maxwell Browell who happen to be one of our client but he died last year December in a plane crash which also claimed the life of his only child, Mr. Maxwell Browell jnr. Who untill death was the next of kin to the father's money with Union Bank Plc. It is only me that knows the bank information of Mr. Maxwell and I'm the only Manager of the Bank who's aware that Mr Maxwell and his son (next of kin) is dead. He left at about $25millon in his account. And before his death, he told me personally if anything happened to him or the son, that his money should be willed to an NGO organisation as the next of kin.

At this juncture I want to transfer this US$25million into the account you have nominated. I will do the paper work here claiming that you are the next of kin to Mr. Maxwell and that you want to transfer the sum into your account abroad. The service of an Attorney will be need to seal everything and to change the data and information in his file so as to enable us transfer it swiftly. If we employ the service of a highly Accredited Lawyer that means it will take us only 14 working days to transfer the money into your account. He will arrange for the affidavit of support from Ministry of Justice claiming that you are the right beneficiary of this fund. Do send your Bank particulars and your personal phone number immediately.

I and my colleague will give you 30% of the total sum of the US$25M for assisting us.

The transaction is 100% risk free.

Yours Faithfully,

DR JOHN DUKE
