Thanks for the compliment Gillie, I'll try to be knowledgeable if I can.

Yes there is a new camp site at Otley this year its on the road to Pool, a good flat sight, there will be catering on site and an old barn type building which we can use for late sings, a generator will provide lights in the building and around the food area and also on the road leading to the site. Full security will also be provided over the weekend. At the moment I am planning to be on site on Thursday to get everything there sorted out for all you good people to arrive on Friday, if we can open the site on Thursday for everyone I will post details nearer to the time, if anyone has any other questions I will try to answer them for you.

See you all at Otley for a very good festival for many people the last one of the year, time to say all your goodbyes to those who you only meet at festivals.

Yes there will be toilets on site, showers etc will be available nearby at I think the cricket club, which is across the road about 200 yards away. There will also be a bus service into town and back. The exact hours of operation have yet to be decided but will operate from the late nite venue until the end of event there.

Hope that this helps

I will be at the campsite from Thursday lunchtimeish and will be accepting guests from then on. Camping costs £3 per person per night whether you have a fetival ticket or not. Hopefully there will be somewhere for caravaners to empty there toilets as well.

On Thursday evening before the festival starts ther is to be a prefestival concert at the Black Horse starting at 2030 hrs approx Artists appearing Mundy Turner, Hall Bros, Clamjamfrie and the Duncan McFarlane Band, costs £2 with festival ticket receipt,£3 without. All are welcome to come to this concert space permitting approx 100 seats in the pub.

If I can be of any more help please let me know, as I write this there are still a few weekend tickets available, see you in Otley.

If there aren't any tickets left, buy a programme from the festival office which will tell you where all the official sessions and singarounds are going on. Probably plenty of unofficial ones too, if you just wander into any of the pubs.

As far as I know there were some tickets left last week, I was imn Otley then and I was told that it was almost sold out, but can't say for sure. However there will be plenty of sessions in the various pubs just walk around and you will find them.

The UK nyckelharpas finally met at Otley - alongside two hurdy-gurdies, a set of French (I think) bagpipes, flute, two melodions, and an electric bass. Now that was an interesting session!

Thanks to Xim for putting up with me for over an hour, and to Sam Pirt for seeing to it that two UK nyckelharpists met for the first time (probably).

Now I can see that French music is also a nyckelharpa possibility.

Cheers Sarah

It was good generally but over-crowded. I was turned away from four (yes four) venues on Saturday night (Methodist Hall, Room 4, Korks and the Black Horse concert room) because they were 'full'. I was told at each venue that I would have had to be there when it first opened for business in the evening to get in. Then I'd have had to sit through whoever was on before the act I wanted to see, consequently eliminating all possibility of seeing anyone else at the other venues. What's the £40 weekend ticket for, please? Mine didn't arrive with a caveat that I would have to make do with one venue, if I was lucky, and then only provided I got there the minute it opened.

Sorry you could not get into the venues mentioned but jusy before the festival we lost the use of Prince Henrys main hall and had to transfer that concert to the Methodist hall a smaller venue and therefore caused several of the venues to become full much sooner. In the programme you were told about the festivals policy of admitance to venues and this was very strictly upheld all weekend.

In response to Sibelius I have to say that on Saturday night I wandered from venue to venue and did not experince any problem getting in. Saw Vin at the Methodist, went on to Korks for the Wise Chicks of Elsan, Civic, no problems anywhere. I can only presume that you were very unfortunate. The only venue you mention I didn't try was Room 4

I have to agree with Raggytash in fact we followed the same route, also did the same on Friday night. Our first time at Otley so bought the T shirt,I was also impressed with the whole set up of stewarding,we had and have had for many years season tickets at Whitby, arrived half an hour before a particular concert at Whitby and struggled to get in as non season ticket holders had been allowed in. A good 8 out of 10 for Otley will try to get back next year. Keith

I wasn't making it up. Possibility of some inconsistent application of the admittance policy, perhaps?

As a matter of interest, Raggytash, what time did you get to the Meth Chapel to see Vin? He was one of my targets.

It's not the end of the world; I'll be back next year.

Interesting. I arrived at 8.40pm (20 minutes before Vin was due on) and was turned away by the stewards who told me the place was already full.

As I said, it's not the end of the world. But when stewards at Otley next year tell me a place is full, I'll be asking them to prove it.

Room 4 is the only venue I can comment on fully I was there all night. It was full at the start of the evening and only eased off towards the end of the night when the Durbervilles came on they were the last act.Stanley Accrington was the previous act and played to a full house. People were turned away but as some left after the act they wanted to see others came and quickley filled the room up again. I was not the person who turned you away from there I was the MC for that concert and had no say in how many people were let in.

Sibelius, I will, in all probability, be stewarding next year, come and find me, I'm the one with the Raggy Tash, and I will make it a personal challange to ensure that if I am on the door you will gain entry .................I might have to kick the artist out to ensure room but what the hell. Seriously don't let this years experience put you off, Otley is a great festival

Post - Top - Home - Printer Friendly - Translate

Subject: RE: Otley Festival

The fact that people came in after could be due to the fact we where asked to inform the steward if we where going over to the pub for 50p of a pint of blacksheep (no beer in the methodist hall)and our seats where safe.

Thanks for your offer, Raggytash, but I don't think kicking artists out will be necessary! Would rather defeat the object somewhat...

Without wanting to labour the point (I've said it twice already) it ain't the end of the world. The point is made, let's leave it at that. I'll be back next year.
