Just a note to thank Jon W. for making such an effort to answer my KELLY JOE PHELPS' lyrics question. I actually heard the Blind Willie Johnson version of "Jesus Make Up My Dyin' Bed" first, and Phelps' version is similar but slightly different. Phelps definitely based his version on Johnson's 'cause where I think Johnson actually might be saying They despised(I've also heard described) the amen,Phelps definitely says "late one Friday evenin'" Did you hear and transcribe those Johnson lyrics yourself? Cause if you did you 've got a great ear!! It's more thorough than the other version I found and I was impressed by that one! Any way if you did I'm sure you'd be able to make out Kellly's lyric's (they're mumbled but at least they're recorded better) If you ever get a copy of his "Lead Me On" C.D. take a listen and see if you can make out even just the first two verses(those are the hardest) for me. THANK YOU SO MUCH for all your effort. Drop me a line if you need help with a song or if you ever figure out Kelly's Lyrics. THANKS AGAIN!!

sincerely, Mark Brown pcbrown@interlog.com

You're very kind, Mark. I enjoy the challenge of decipherig difficult-to-understand lyrics. I only wish my ear was as good when it comes to hearing melodies, intervals, chords etc.

I was at MediaPlay the other day, and looked for Kelly Joe Phelps, but couldn't find him. I'll keep looking though.

My curiosity has been piqued by this song - I'll bet there are earlier sources than Blind Willie Johnson. I'm going to start another thread for more information on it.

Ah Jon, would you like to try out your ear on Patton's "Some Summer Day". I'm going crazy trying to figure it out. It is on the Yazoo "King of the Delta Blues" CD

I don't have that recording, Murray. If you can get it to me (either a sound file or a tape) I'd be glad to give it a listen and see what I come up with. E-mail me: jdwhitney@wpmail.code3.com
