The version in Brown (North Carolina Folklore) is "For old Susanna is a pretty woman---" In other (old country versions, Susanna is a "funny old man." According to the OED, a funicle is a cord (can be umbilical)--- OK, so it's not funny. I think it is just an intentional play on funny old man. |
