Subject: Words to: The Great Divide From: GUEST Date: 08 Sep 02 - 06:20 AM Hi, I've got some words floating round in my head (to much beer maybe?), to a song i'd love to know the Title and full lyrics to. Tried to search for it on database- no luck I think the chorus goes something like this- He's or (She's) gone away, He's gone away, Yesterday, Yesterday Where the rivers change direction- across the great divide. Please help someone- i'd be really pleased! Kilping |
Subject: RE: Words to: The Great Divide From: Dave4Guild Date: 08 Sep 02 - 06:28 AM This is a song by Kate Wolf called "Across The Great Divide". It has been covered by Nanci Griffith amongst others and you can obtain the lyrics and chords from her website. I'd send them myself but my typing is so slow that my computer switches itself itself off before I've finished! |

Subject: RE: Words to: Across the Great Divide From: Dave4Guild Date: 08 Sep 02 - 02:41 PM Excellent stuff, everyone. It is a gorgeous song, but for most folkies I think the key of G with the capo on fret two seems to be the way it's actually played. Nina Gerber's lead guitar is worth listening to on Kate's version. I assume that is in A, if anyone has the tab, it might be worth spending three years mastering it! |
Subject: RE: Words to: Across the Great Divide From: Lane Date: 08 Sep 02 - 03:35 PM One of my absolute favorites... and yes, Dave4Guild - I play it in G with a capo. BUT - I couldn't agree with you more about Nina Gerber's lead - I've been trying and trying to figure it out and cant .... would absolutely kill...well, or maybe pay? to have the tab to that lead work.... anyone??? Subject: RE: Words to: Across the Great Divide From: Leadfingers Date: 15 Sep 02 - 08:18 PM I call mself a professional song thief,as I do not have the ability to combine words and music to make a coherent whole, and so have to rely on other cleverer people to do the hard work for me.However, unlike some I DO credit the writer and or source of my material.Kate Wolf and Mudcat will get a mention when this is added to my rep. Thanks Catters-a Cracking song. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Across the Great Divide (Kate Wolf) From: Genie Date: 27 Aug 09 - 09:07 AM I'm trying to find the date when Kate wrote this. One source on "the Google" says 1976, but another says 1981 ( I think that's an album date), and another has the date 2007 attached (obviously way off). Anyone know the original copyright date? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Across the Great DHiivide (Kate Wolf) From: Barry Finn Date: 27 Aug 09 - 05:22 PM Hi Genie On Kate's web site you can view Kate's complete song list. The date there is 1980. Barry |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Across the Great Divide (Kate Wolf) From: Genie Date: 28 Aug 09 - 03:43 PM Thanks, Barry. I did go to Kate's website and found her songlist, but I did not see any dates given. I must have somehow just overlooked that column - unless I was looking at the list of Fans' Favorites instead. I guess 1980 is the publication date. Did she possibly write it earlier and not "release" it for a few years? I believe I've read that Kate wrote this when a friend of hers was dealing with a terminal illness. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Across the Great Divide (Kate Wolf) From: GUEST,Keith Miller Date: 30 Jan 18 - 12:03 AM I heard one of Kate's songs that I loved. I have no idea what the name of it was. It had a few lyrics in Spanish. That is the best I can describe it. It was a soaring sort of anthem. |
Subject: ADD: Across the Great Divide (Kate Wolf) From: RunrigFan Date: 30 Jan 18 - 10:01 PM ACROSS THE GREAT DIVIDE (Kate Wolf) I've been walkin' in my sleep And countin' troubles 'stead of countin' sheep Where the years went I can't say (But) I just turned around and they've gone away And I've been siftin' through the layers Of dusty books and faded papers They tell a story I used to know It was one that happened so long ago. CHORUS It's gone away in yesterday And (Now) I find myself on the mountainside Where the rivers change direction Across the Great Divide Well (Yes) I heard the owl a-callin' Softly as the night was fallin' With a question and I replied But he's gone across the borderline He's gone away in yesterday And (Now) I find myself on the mountainside Where the rivers change direction Across the Great Divide. (And the) The finest hour that I have seen Is the one that comes between The edge of night and the break of day When the darkness rolls away. It's gone away in yesterday And I find myself on the mountainside Where the rivers change direction Across the Great Divide. It's gone away in yesterday And I find myself on the mountainside Where the rivers change direction Across the Great Divide.
