Richard, here are the words and chords to Boss Man. The site's home page will get you words and chords to dozens more Lightfoot songs...maybe all of them.

Cluin, just a suggestion: people who ask for words and chords don't always have access to songbooks, and may not be able to figure out chords -- even to simple songs -- just by listening. The "tradition" here on the Mudcat has been to answer such requests in one of three ways:
(a) posting a link to the Digital Tradition if the song is there (or at least mentioning that the song is there)
(b) posting the lyrics if the song is "folk" or traditional and NOT in the DT (and changing the subject line of your post to include the phrase "LyrAdd", which will alert the harvesters to pick it up for the next version of the DT), or
(c) if it's a pop or otherwise "non-folk" song (use whatever criteria you like), post a link to the words and chords if you can find them.

You can find that one in more than one of his many songbooks out there, but it's not difficult to figure out anyway, lyrics or chords. Just listen to it.

Cut my teeth playing Lightfoot songs. Glad to hear he's home and doing well. I much much prefer his earlier stuff, but he's still one of the best.

"He's up and walking around. He's doing really well, considering where he's come from," Harvey said Friday.

Lightfoot, 64, was flown to McMaster University Medical Center in Hamilton, Ontario, on Sept. 8 with internal bleeding from a weakness in an abdominal blood vessel. He went home Thursday.

The surgeon who operated on Lightfoot said he was pleased to see him move on to the next phase of recovery.

"Mr. Lightfoot's physical fitness and personal strength have helped him overcome a life-threatening condition," said Dr. Michael Marcaccio, a gastrointestinal specialist.

Lightfoot, his wife, and two young children asked that further details about his condition remain confidential. "He's requesting his privacy, especially with Christmas coming up," said Harvey.

The illness forced Lightfoot, whose accolades include 17 Juno awards, the Order of Canada and the Governor General's Performing Arts Award, to cancel performances in Canada and the United States.

Yeah, Steve, people oughta be more accepting of death, and they would be if they weren't so danged scared of it themselves. I've always admired societies where death was seen as a noble crossing rather than as a defeat (which it certainly is not).

I would like to do away with all the funeral homes and such bureaucratic nonsense, and give people Viking burials on burning pyres, personally...with all their friends and relations there to give them a glorious sendoff.

I haven't heard any news on Gord, which probably means he's doing okay...

I'd like to say that although Gord's voice has weakened a little, his general musicianship and presentation has remained impeccable. The last time I saw him play was at the Mariposa Folk Festival in Orillia 3 years ago, and it was an excellent show throughout. He also did a number of requests, not missing a word or a beat in any of them. This kind of mastery of a huge song catalog is pretty impressive. His attitude was very gracious too.

I met Rick Haynes(Gord's bass player) in the lobby of the Mac hospital and he informed me that Gord was "doing good". I didn't pry, knowing the privacy of their circle. I said that Gord was welcome to come out for a trip on my bus, which was just parked outside. They all chuckled and said they'd tell him. That'd be cool!

I also received the information that Gordon is making very good recovery.

Once again for the sake of a certain person who seems to be a medical expert I would like to provide the following information from HAMILTON HEALTH SCIENCES.

Marcaccio said Lightfoot's physical fitness and health - he works out four days a week and runs 16 kilometres a week, according to bandmates - has made a difference in treating him.

"If Mr. Lightfoot weren't such a healthy man, he might not have survived," Marcaccio said.

That should fairly answer any speculation on Gordon`s lifestyle. The word "denial" does not enter this. Gordon was the first to admit that he had a problem with alcohol. That was however a very long time ago.

Long live Gord!

Press reports today (Wednesday) say that the Atlantic Canada concerts will be rescheduled, and promoter Bernie Fiedler has announced that the Massey Hall concerts November 13th through 16th will go on as scheduled."

Wow, I've been flamed. It's not a half truth the Gord had his problems with the bottle. I was hoping that he had overcome them. From what I have since read, that is the case and God Bless him. To say that his current problems have nothing to do with his past is ridiculous. And, I am a Canadian and a fan. I truly hope he has a full reovery.

The problem is apparently a rare abdominal disorder with a weakened artery in the stomach area - a condition that likely was present for some time before the internal bleeding emergency on Saturday night. Reports say that he is doing okay, still in intensive care but expected to recover. Sounds pretty serious though.

Updates are being posted on the Hamilton hospital web site here although the latest one is from about 28 hours ago.

News stories today from the CBC and the Hamilton Spectator don't add much news but go over the medical situation, with bio info - the Spectator has a recent pic.

The rest of Gord's Canadian tour has been cancelled but so far not the US tour scheduled to begin Oct. 17.

This has been front page news in Orillia for 2 days now. Everyone is relieved that he appears to be improving. I saw a picture in the Orillia Packet of Gord a few days ago, just before he got sick, and thought at the time "My God, he looks like he's at death's door!" I guess I was not far off. Time sure can be rough on people. I don't know of anyone who has created a finer body of songs as a legacy to the Canada that was when he and I were kids.

I will always be deeply grateful to Mr Lightfoot for making a big difference in my life with all those wonderful songs.

I'm glad to hear that the news is promising. When the story first broke, I was afraid that the family might be keeping mum because Lightfoot was already brain-dead or something similarly tragic. What a relief to hear that he's getting better.

If you are referring to Gordon`s past alcohol phase, then perhaps you should get it right and know that Gordon gave up alcohol many many moons ago. It`s people like you who I can picture writing for rag newspapers and who love drama and half truths. Get your information together son before speculating! Or are you perhaps a part-time doctor as well?

A true fan and an-up-to-date one also.

Saw him last winter. Time has not been kind -- better half said "that is one sick fella." But even if the ends of his range were a little reedy, and he ran out of wind on the long notes, you could shut your eyes and just about believe it was the same voice you'd heard twenty-five years before.

Orillia is a pretty wonderful place and it's Gord's Hometown. I don't think that's the case. However, as much as it appears that he's looking after himself now, it wasn't that long ago that he had some real problems with his lifestyle. Hoping that he's cleaned those up.

Hamilton — Shaken band members and family have been standing watch at the bedside of Canadian folk-rock icon Gordon Lightfoot after doctors performed emergency surgery on his stomach Sunday.

Mr. Lightfoot, 63, was to perform in his home town of Orillia, Ont., on Saturday, but experienced stomach pains and was rushed to McMaster University Health Centre in Hamilton by air ambulance.

"This is a difficult time for the whole family," Rick Haynes, a long-time friend of Mr. Lightfoot and member of his band, told a news conference outside the hospital Sunday.

"I've known Gord for 35 years and I can't remember the last time he was in a hospital. So this is a different experience and it's challenging for everyone. We've been up all night."

Mr. Haynes said Mr. Lightfoot was being cared for by doctors who specialize in gastrointestinal problems. But he couldn't elaborate further on the cause of Mr. Lightfoot's illness or give details of the surgery.

Mr. Lightfoot was in the intensive care unit and was conscious, Mr. Haynes said.

"He's definitely getting better. He's not in as much pain as he was in yesterday... We're looking at recovery now."

He credited the likelihood of recovery to Mr. Lightfoot's healthy habits.

"He works out four days a week and he runs 10 miles a week. The doctor told us that his excellent health will help in what we hope will be a speedy recovery," Mr. Haynes said.

Singer-songwriter Gordon Lightfoot, one of Canada's most celebrated folk musicians, is in a southern Ontario hospital in critical condition.

Lightfoot was airlifted early Sunday morning to McMaster University Medical Centre in Hamilton. An ambulance services supervisor told CTV News that he's listed in critical condition.

Hospital spokesperson Jeff Vallentin confirmed that Lightfoot was admitted, but the family has requested that no further information be released. The nature of his illness is not yet known.

Vallentin said Lightfoot's family has thanked the public for its concern and good wishes but has requested people respect their need for privacy.

"I think for right now they just want to be together as a family," Vallentin said, noting that a statement would be released later on Sunday.

Earlier, Lightfoot arrived at Orillia's Soldiers Memorial Hospital, about one hour north of Toronto, but was transferred to Hamilton at about 1:30 ET this morning.

The 63-year-old had been scheduled to appear before a hometown crowd at the Opera House in Orillia Saturday evening to promote his latest album, A Painter Passing Through. However, the concert was cancelled after he took ill.

The Stratford Festival, where Lightfoot was scheduled to perform Monday night, has cancelled his appearance.

"Due to illness, the Gordon Lightfoot concert in Stratford on Monday, Sept. 9 has been postponed," the festival said in a statement. "At this time, we have no further details about rescheduling of the concert but will post this information as soon as possible."

Lightfoot's hits include The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, written about the 1975 sinking of the boat of the same name. Others include Sundown and If You Could Read My Mind.

In April, his recording company released a new Complete Greatest Hits album, bringing together Lightfoot's most well known hits onto one CD.

Lightfoot was born on Nov. 17, 1938 in Orillia. His first appearance was at Massey Hall in Toronto at the tender age of 12 after he won a talent contest.

He started out singing in barbershop quartets and as a member of a duo struck out on his own in the early 60s. In less than two years, his sound and his life changed forever when his music was discovered by Albert Grossman, the manager for Bob Dylan.

Lightfoot signed his first big time recording contract with Warner/Reprise and from 1970 through 1998 released 14 more original albums.

Among his accolades are the Order of Canada, the Governor General's Performing Arts Award and a star on the Canadian Walk of Fame. He was inducted into the Canadian Broadcast Hall of Fame during its 75th annual convention last year. In 1986 he was inducted into the Canadian Recording Industry Hall of Fame.

I just spoke to my cousin who works at the McMaster University Medical Centre. Lightfoot is in intensive care under tight security.

The fact that he was airlifted there from another hospital in the middle of the night is not a good sign.

Also, the fact that his family has demanded that no information be released is an indication that he may not make it. If it were less serious, they would tell people not to worry.

I heard on the radio this morning that Gordon Lightfoot is in the hospital, in critical condition...no other information. Does anybody know about this? And I'll surely hold a good thot for him, for what it's worth...
