The tracks from Buz's excellent second CD are available on SoundCloud. Well worth a listen - Crazy Weather seems more than a little prophetic.

I was listening to Shirley’s version of Locked in Ice this morning and went down the rabbit hole to find out about Buz Collins. Finally found this thread. Although it is now 21 years, it is with sadness that I learnt of his death. I listened to his first album this morning, not knowing he had died. I have not seen any other album online but will follow the link above to the second album - I hope. I looked up the song after first hearing Shirley sing it and hope to learn to sing and play it. Thank you to everyone who is contributing to this thread to keep Buz and his memory alive. ?? I send love to his wife and family. I also lost my husband 12 years ago.

Previous links to the Songs of the Inland Waterways website will have ceased to work since a website refresh. The links to details of Buz Collins' recordings are now :

Water and Rain

Codebreakers

Any biographical info about Buz for inclusion on the website would be welcome. I greatly admire his work and feel his contributions to the folk (and canal) songs repertoire deserves greater recognition.

Buz and his music is very much on my mind. As anyone following this thread probably knows at this point, his aunt Shirley Collins has just released her second album since coming out of retirement,"Heart's Ease." and it is an absolutely brilliant and totally relevant album, performed with joy and excitingly adventurous accompaniments, making it an utterly worthy and remarkable continuation in the history of Shirley's extensive musical career. One of the highlights of the album is her reworking of Buz's song about the Ghost Ship SS Baychimo, which she calls "Locked In Ice," and has moved back a century. A great song. The whole album is well worth seeking out. And beautiful to have Buz's memory carried forward.

Mike from Norway, I enjoyed reading your recollections of Buz.

I wrote on this board about 7 years ago. At the time I was hoping to find out if his second album had been made available. Does anybody know if it is available anywhere?   andynagy@comcast.net

Buz’s aunt’s book “All in the Downs” (Shirley Collins) will give you an understanding of the family environment of exceptionally gifted artists from which Buz developed his own talents.

It’s a well written history of her and her sister Dolly’s (Buz’s mum) upbringing and interest in English folk music.

Ceejay - should you see this post, I recommend the book, more as we knew him and much of the areas of Sussex in it.

Nice to hear from you Mike, via this thread and e-mail. Buz apparently travelled on his narrowboat up my local canal and gave an impromptu concert (which is still remembered) to members of a local canal club. Unfortunately I heard of this second-hand many years after the event.

My name is Mike Kobernus. I am a writer, living in Norway. Many years ago, I travelled to England to meet with Buz on his longboat. It was quite a trip, and took me a while to find him.

Eventually we did meet, and I ended up buying a guitar from him. He also gave me a copy of his CD, Codebreakers. I still have it, and I still have his guitar.

I got to thinking about him today because of another singer that passed away, many years ago. I was thinking about all the wonderful people in the world who enrich our lives with their talent and passion, and I remembered Buz.

We talked for a few hours, maybe, and he made me tea. I got to sit in the longboat, and listen to him play guitar. He impressed me much with his ability. Years later I still recall his playing style with admiration.

I do hope someone sees this message. This thread has not been commented for a very long time. But I still remember him.

I never met Buz Collins but greatly admire his talent with his first CD being a particular favourite. I have a copy of his second CD 'Codebreakers' but unfortunately the quality of the second half of the recording is poor. This is more a 'pressing' or 'burning' issue not a reflection on the performance. It certainly deserves to be more widely heard. If Andy Robinson still has the master tapes maybe he could 'release' them on a fee-paying download site. There doesn't have to be the expense of creating a physical CD entity.

Lyrics and sound samples of two canal related songs from 'Codebreakers' are on Songs of the Inland Waterways website.

This is so sad. I had the pleasure of seeing Buz perform in 1999 for the Spalding Folk Club. I loved his music so much I followed him to his next gig to see him play again, and took my mum and dad. I got talking to him and we both loved Jethro Tull so he played me a song. What a lovely bloke. I often wondered why I never saw a new album from him, though I checked periodically (having returned to Australia). I only found out about his death tonight. So so sad.

So sad to hear this. Only just learned because I pulled out my copy of America Over the Water after making plans to reread it with a friend, and for the first time noticed the dedication to both Dolly and to Buz. My love and condolences ten years late to family and friends. Did the second album end up being released? I would love to hear it.

hi everyone. I came accross this site after a google search to see if there was any info about Buz. I recorded his second album codebreakers and travelled and played with him and actually found him unconscious in his boat. Buz was an inspiration to so many people in so many ways and I think of him every day. I have the original masters and artwork for his album and have considered pressing up a small run if there was enough interest (subject to Sam's approval). If anyone would like to know more you can leave a message for me at reverbnation.com/globalwarningandyrobinson you can also listen to a track off Codebreakers here. Regards Andy

Buz was a fine musician and a very nice man. I only met him a few times, notably when he came and played guitar for our morris side when we were dancing at a waterways festival.
Several times in the past couple of years I've just missed speaking to him as he was striding off down a corridor at some festival or another - you don't think when that happens that you might not have another oportunity.

I was told by a boating friend of mine that Buz had been laid to rest in a wood in a special biodegradible coffin so that his the trees could feed on his remains (and complete the nitrogen cycle). I'd be interested to know more about this, because I might like to choose this method for the eventual disposal of my remains.

Buz's website is now inaccessible. And a search on the archives of Google newsgroups showed up a thread on the uk.rec.waterways group initiated by Sam Collins on 28 August:

"On Monday evening, Buz took his own life after a lifetime battle with depression. Please pass this on to other waterways groups, and I will be in touch with details of a passing on ceremony and musical tribute. Sorry."

If this is true, it's very sad news. Buz lived on a narrowboat with his wife/partner and their child. He was quite a singer - but considering that he was the son of Dolly Collins and the nephew of Shirley Collins, it was hardly surprising. I last saw him when we were both singing at a folk evening at "Bridge 61" Foxton Locks earlier this year.

My sympathy goes to his family.

I sincerely hope this is an unfortunate error, but I've heard a rumour that Buz Collins died tragically last week.

The information came to me 'second-hand', but from a normally reliable source, and he claimed his source to be the editor of a local Folk magazine.

Can someone please confirm or deny this?
