Subject: Lyr Add: SEPTEMBER MORNING (Llewellyn M. Toulmin) From: GUEST,stoulmin1@aol.com Date: 08 Sep 02 - 11:53 PM I can't find any songs commemorating Sept 11 on the Mudcat song database, nor have I seen a compilation. Yet I know that many have been written, because I wrote a song a few days after the event (see below) and because I have read about some, and heard another one the other night at the Folklore Society of Greater Washington sing. Please post other songs to this thread. Thanks. Here is my effort, dedicated to a colleague I used to work with, who was killed at the Pentagon attack: SEPTEMBER MORNING (Sung to the tune of "The Good Reuben James") By Llewellyn M. Toulmin Written September 14, 2001 Dedicated to my colleague "Jeep" Fisher, who died at the Pentagon 'Twas a clear September morning in New York and DC The innocent were working, for you and for me Then a wing and a flash, and cruel explosions roar That hit those mighty buildings, and crushed every floor. CHORUS: Tell me, what were their names? Tell me, what were their names? Did you have a friend, on the ground or the planes? Tell me, what were their names? Tell me, what were their names? Did you have a friend, on the ground or the planes? Passengers fought back, even though they knew they'd die Some of them did struggle; "Let's roll" was their cry They charged for that cockpit, and stopped short that plane They saved the nation's Capitol, their loss is our gain. CHORUS Day turned into night for our sailors and marines The Pentagon was burning, it was a hellish scene They draped a giant flag, when night turned into day Marking the tomb where our gallant soldiers lay. CHORUS The firemen responded, as heroes always do Climbing ever upward, for me and for you They climbed up twin towers, until they could no more Instead of hell's fire, they found heaven's door. CHORUS We'll fly our flag on high; we'll fight 'til we're free Of this tyranny of terror, that's come from 'cross the sea We'll fly the Stars and Stripes of the land of the brave And we will get justice, for every single grave. CHORUS |

Subject: RE: September 11th Commemoration Songs From: katlaughing Date: 09 Sep 02 - 12:05 AM If you do a search on InOBU's postings, you will find several which he wrote, recorded, and has had performed by others. Your song is very poignant, thanks for sharing it. You bet it does, Bert! |
Subject: RE: September 11th Commemoration Songs From: mg Date: 09 Sep 02 - 01:00 AM I think I posted mine but here it is again...it is a list of clichés obviously...the tune is similar to WHERE AM I TO GO JOHNNIES... Love is in the air, dear people. Love is in the air. I can feel it everywhere, dear people, Feel it everywhere. Hope is on the rise, dear people. Hope is on the rise. I see it in your eyes, dear people, See it in your eyes. Faith will pull us through, dear people. Faith will pull us through. There's so much left to do, dear people, So much left to do. Things are on the mend, dear people. Things are on the mend. I hear it in the wind, dear people, Hear it in the wind. Spring will come again, dear people. Spring will come again. It's as it's ever been, dear people, As it's ever been. |

Subject: Lyr Add: ENGINE 33 and SCALES OF REVENGE From: InOBU Date: 09 Sep 02 - 03:59 AM Thanks Kat... Here are the words, in case folks have trouble finding them, for this week... I'm singing them on Tuesday night, see the thread about to be posted, "a new definition of folk" (you'll see, not really a troll, more of a rant, sort of...) well here they are, Peace. Larry
Engine 33 (Tune Bold Robert Emmett)
Who ever can forget the gray ash covered engines
Remember Tim Stackpole, how he prayed in the wreckage
So now to acknowledge, just one of the many
Remember Kevin Pfiefer, Mike Boyle and Keith Maynard
And though we mourn them, they're still on the job now
So tell all your children to tell all their children
SCALES OF REVENGE
Words Lorcan Otway, Tune Traditional, Willy Of Windsbury from the singing of the great Anne Briggs. (all rights reserved)
Oh America's fired a cruse missile, and it's killed my brother's son
Oh some men from Saudi Arabia, have killed my old school friend
Oh the helicopters came last night, and we fled into the dark
And here I sit and I watch the world, as blood is shed for blood
Don't stop, don't stop for our martyred dead, or one inch of blood soaked soil, |

Subject: Lyr/Chords Add: VALLEY OF THE TOWERING SHADOWS From: Genie Date: 09 Sep 02 - 07:28 PM I began writing this song shortly after the 9-11-01 attacks and have modified both the tune and the lyrics a great deal since I posted the earliest versions of the song. Some earlier versions are posted here Help: 9-11 and here Valley of The Shadow. These are the current lyrics and chords. I have also put in measure markings (which I had not posted earlier) to help give a feel for the rhythm of the words. I have an MP3 of the song, but since I stupidly sang the song 3 consecutive times (trying out different keys) on the same MP3, the file is 15 MB, so I haven't been able to send it to anyone. (I don't know how to cut out a portion of an MP3 and "paste" it into or transfer to another MP3.) But I did make sheet music for the song using Finale NotePad (which can be downloaded free ---for Mac or Windows -- from Coda Music Technologies). I can send that via email to anyone upon request. I will post a MIDI as soon as I figure out how to do that. Genie VALLEY OF THE TOWERING SHADOWS (2/4 time - moderate pace) G F C D F C F G G F G (repeat melody of last line of chorus instrumentally) G F C D G F G F C F G G G F G (Repeat melody of last two lines of chorus instrumentally.) G F C D G F G G F G ------------- * With each measure getting 2 beats, the word "justice" uses 3 beats and the word "for" uses one. Genie (Unless I post a correction , please assume that the post survived the transmission with the chords staying where they belong.) |
Subject: RE: September 11th Commemoration Songs From: Genie Date: 09 Sep 02 - 07:48 PM Great lyrics, Llewellyn. Mary, your song is so uplifting -- I hope you will sing it for us at Sunnycamp. And, InObu, that first one is a wonderful tribute song and the second one really puts things in perspective. I'll try to post clickies to link to the previous threads where folks have posted songs relating to 9-11-01. Also, in case you haven't heard it yet, Tom Paxton's tribute to the NYC firefighters -- "The Bravest" -- is posted as an MP3 on his website. (The lyrics and chords are posted in the Mudcat forum as well.) |
Subject: RE: September 11th Commemoration Songs From: Bill D Date: 09 Sep 02 - 08:24 PM Lou Toulmin sang this song at our local (Wash DC area) open sing last Friday evening (and sang it well and movingly(...I asked him if he would send it to me, and/or post it here.(he had used Mudcat only to get a few lyrics before) I am glad to see it, and am taking the liberty of adding line breaks.....

Subject: RE: September 11th Commemoration Songs From: GUEST,stoulmin!@aol.com Date: 11 Sep 02 - 12:36 AM Bill, Thanks for adding the line breaks! I haven't quite got the hang of this yet (see my unbroken postings with a new "Pirates of Penzance" in the Pirate Songs Needed area, and revised "Over the Hills and Far Away" in that area). Soooo, how DO you do line breaks? When I "submit message" it looks fine, but then in the final msg it isn't! Cheers. Lew Toulmin |
Subject: RE: September 11th Commemoration Songs From: Genie Date: 11 Sep 02 - 01:25 AM Lew, If you type "BR" or "br"-- with the pointy brackets around those letters -- after a line, it creates a "line break." Genie |
