this song, on Jennifer Warnes recent cd 'The Well' SD8960, 2001, is interesting, both because it is very beautifully written, and because it exemplifies the folk process, 21st c.

The song is set to the Irish air 'Dawning of the Day' (Faine Gael an Lae) (Dawning of the Day 2 in DT), which is also the tune Patrick Kavanagh used for his 'Raglan Road'. Curious that the tune itself seems to engender songs of love, unrequited in the first two cases, a little late in the most recent. I'm sure anyone could write a rollicking good song about sea monkeys to this or any other air, but it wouldn't quite fit, would it? Nobody would enjoy it the way they do these examples.

Probably a good candidate for a Study thread is 'Dawning of the Day' there are at least two other versions than that in DT, expanded lyrics by Tommy Makem for example, and the Raglan Road connection should be made. (Raglan Road in DT should mention 'Dawning of the Day')

Here's Jennifer's song:

Too Late Love Comes
(lyric by Jennifer Warnes)
Trad. arr. by Eric Rigler & Martin Davich

my home has been a warrior field
where now and then I've seen
a rainbow rising o'er the graves
down in the gentle green
and as I waltzed across the mines
time sped so breathlessly
as I fought for love
and I sang for love
too late, love comes to me

I saw you coming o'er the hill
so strong, so brave, so true
I fell down to my kness and cried
the way I used to do
it came at such surprise to me
I thought those tears had passed
is it God who laughs this heart awake?
too late, love comes at last

O lovers how they come and go
like waves upon the shore
brave hearts can drown in the briny deep
and still cry out for more
my treasure's in the water now
my pearls are lost at sea
and my heart must bend like a rainbow
too late, you've come to me

(arangement based on the traditional Iris air, "Dawning of the Day")
