I went to the Down From the Mountain show a while back, mainly to see my heros Ralph Stanley & Emmylou Harris. They were great, but I was really taken by Del McCoury's band, especially their Bluegrass treatment of Richard Thompson's '52 Vincent Black Lightning. I finally found the CD. What a treat. The band is rock solid, the choice of songs is really neat and as an aspiring picker I was really taken by the Banjo playing of Rob McCoury.

Has anyone else heard this CD?

Amazon.com have a few free MP3 downloads. They also have quite a few from the other band who really impressed me that night, The Nashville Bluegrass Band.

The folk show on Vermont Public Radio had the goodness to play the '52 Vincent cut while I had a tape going. I intend to liberate it, even though I have no bluegrass band.

Peter.

Steve:

I saw them in San Diego a couple of months ago. A good solid band. I haven't heard the CD yet.

Last year at the WinterGrass Festival (Tacoma,WA), "the boys" were the teachers at the bluegrass academy. While I did not attend the academy, an acquaintance did, and told me that the whole band had a "bluegrass Karaoke" session during class one day. You asked them to play a song (and apparently there wasn't a one that they didn't know) and they played backing while you sang or picked your instrument...

Damn. missed the opportunity of an age there...

As a consolation, Ronnie played my mando at wintergrass, and declared it a "mighty fine axe"
