The Northwest Folklife is happening this week end of Memorial Day in Seattle WA from Friday 5-22 through Monday night through 5-25. Curious mind(s) want to know how many Mudcatters are there out there that attended and/or performed the Northwest Folklife 98?

I performit wi' a' my Gaelic-singin' friends th' last twa year at Folklife, an' this year they're a' performin' wi'oot me while I'm trappit on Denver at Graduate Scuil. Sae I'm nae there, but I'm wi' th' Seattle Folk i' speerit!

If ye want tae see a hantle o' my friends, check oot th' website at www.slighe.com for a rundoon on Seattle Gaelic happenin's. I'm sure they did a tweed-waulkin' set agin this year, an' my teachers Rich Hill an' Seamus Gagne micht hae led some wairkshops on Scots Gaelic singin' an' th' playin' o' th' Celtic Harp. Also, I'm sure they've been on stage wi' their bands, Mundo Celtico an' Wicked Celts.

I'm near tae greetin' jist thinkin' on my exile frae th' Feis/Festival/Faire, sae I'm entreatin' ye tae enjoy it for me! Och, blast. I must get back tae that resairch paper th' noo. Th' quarter's almaist o'er!

Crowded, Crowded, Crowded, Crowded, Crowded, Crowded, Crowded, Crowded, Crowded, Crowded, Crowded, Crowded, Crowded, rainy, cool, Crowded, Crowded, but still a lot of fun. about 16 stages, 6,000 performers, 100's of 1,000's of people. Wish those crowds would turn up at other folk events throughout the year.

I didn't make it to Folklife this year but I had several friends that took their bands to it ( it's a pretty big event for people around here). The groups that I know went were The Luckimute River String Band, Blue River, and Accoustic Squeeze. The Luckimute River String Band was instrumental (no pun intended) in getting our band to go public (our band http://home.att.net/~jjplummer/bridgeport_volunteers.html). Another big event from here is the festival in Stevens Washington in July (we're almost always booked somewhere else during that weekend, but not so far this year). And of course there is always Wintergrass in November.

I'm going to revive this ancient and dormant thread to ask for assistance with a project I'm organizing for Seattle's Northwest Folklife Festival.

Over the 30-year life of the festival, we have accumulated several hundred hours of recordings, including radio broadcasts, soundboard tapes, and on-the-grounds field recordings, along with many of the audition tapes submitted by would-be festival performers. This is a unique and hugely valuable historical record of both traditional and revival performers in the Portland/Seattle/Vancouver region. It's essential that we preserve these recordings before the original tapes deteriorate.

But we're looking for more, and for other recordings by performers who appeared at the Folklife Festival over the years. We're also interested in other, earlier recordings that will help us document the Folk Revival in the Pacific Northwest.

Do you have any old tapes made at the Folklife Festival, or of Northwestern performers at concerts, coffeehouses, parties or other venues? If you do, or if you know of anybody else who might have some old recordings, please post to this thread, or send me e-mail at [e-mail]. If you have tapes to lend us, we will happily give you copies on CD when we return the originals.

Our plan is to convert the existing recordings to digital form, and place copies of the collection in several public archives where they can be accessible to future researchers. We also want to produce a series of radio programs for regional broadcast, and offer some "best of" compilations for public sale.

John, that's great! I figured that there was a huge stock of stuff from Folklife, and I've often wondered if anything was being done with it.

I don't think I have any recordings or tapes from Folklife, although I have performed there a number of times, but I do have a couple of boxes of tapes from hoots, parties, and informal songfests from the late Fifties and early Sixties--maybe even a concert or two. There is some pretty interesting stuff on these tapes, and some very interesting people.

The problem at the moment is: 1) much of it is in storage and I'm unable to get at it right now; and 2) although I have a fairly good idea of what's on some of these tapes, many of them were given to me unlabelled (!!), so I need to go through them and see what I've got. Somewhere among them (I hope!) is tape that I made in a recording studio in 1959.

I just recently purchased a CD-RW drive for my computer, and thanks to the good offices of Bob (Deckman) Nelson and the generosity of Jo Harms, I have a good quality functional open-reel tape recorder. My plan is to first learn how, and then transfer all this stuff to CDs, hopefully before the tapes all crumble away.

As soon as I find out what I have, you'd be most welcome to make use of any of it that would be of interest. I just put your e-mail address in my address book. Mine is -- [e-mail].

Johnross,  I performed for the 25th anniversary of folklife (a song I wrote for the event) and in a singer-songwriter showcase the previous year.  I don't know if Folklife still has either my audition or performance tapes, but I could provide you with tapes (or MP3s) of the songs, if you want them.  (Other than that I perform only in the band scrambles, Seattle Song Circle stage, and informal venues--partly because they keep pushing the submission deadline forward, so that by the time I find out about it, it's too late to get a good quality CD to them.)
Please let me know if you want these tapes or if I can be of assistance in other ways.

Sounds like the burial rites for a prehistoric pachyderm -- i.e., a mammoth untertaking!
