This was posted by a young Woman Marine on the Marine's Forum a bit ago. It was handed out to the students at her child's school today. Thought that maybe you all could relate to it -

As the soot and dirt and ash rained down,
We became one color.

As we carried each other down the
stairs of the burning building,
We became one class.

As we lit candles of waiting and hope,
We became one generation.

As the firefighters and police officers
fought their way into the inferno,
We became one gender.

As we fell to our knees
in prayer for strength,
We became one faith.

As we whispered or shouted
words of encouragement,
We spoke one language.

As we gave our blood in lines miles long,
We became one body.

As we mourned together in great loss,
We became one soul.

As we retell with pride of
the sacrifice of heroes,
We became one people.

We are:
One color
One class
One generation
One gender
One faith
One language
One body
One family
One soul
One people

We are The Power Of One
We are United
We are AMERICA

Steve

One boot stamping on a human face. If you'll excuse my cynicism.

Yes, we are two, otherwise we are one amorphous blob. Hooray for twoness.

Well, a little temporary co-existence never hurt anyone, guys.
It's the ones that don't let you out that are really murder! :>)

It's a darlin' sentiment -- even if it is a little sloshy philosophically.

It seemed like an inoffensive enough little poem until I read the last 3 lines...kind of negates the whole thing. If we're going to be one, can we not at least have the WHOLE WORLD being one? or am I just a crazy idealist.

Dear Phil Ochs, please come back thanks, Leo

Not great poetry, but as to the oneness, it does only extend to the effort to mitigate the harm, not to go and do some in revenge, so I agree that that kind of oneness is good, and that is the kind New York was, sort of... late the night of the 11th last year, my Genie and I were at our local polish/greek cafe, having diner accross from our local anarchist league, when a group of cops, in real shock came in to grab a well desrerved bit of peace and food. The anarchist eejits began making pig noises... Well, they all know me, and respect me to a degree, so I walked over to their table and said, knock it off lads, you are exibiting the kind of behavior you are railing against. You are judging these guys by the uniform they wear on a day that anyone of them would have given his or her life to drag you out of a building, anarchist or business tycon. We didn't know the death toll yet, but we all know that a large number of uniformed folks died that day. We got into a good talk about it, and some of them kept the others behaved while the police had their meal and rest. That's a good bit of oneness.
Cheers Larry

So Leo - have you always been a cynic? You certainly got a message I never saw there. Are you from America? Your second post seemed a bit more humanistic. Phil Ochs? Who is that?

Steve
