But at the Levy site, I just click on the words "search the collection." There is no icon next to the words. Your mouse cursor turns into a "finger" when the mouse hovers over the words. I searched for Loch Lomond and Brennan on the Moor and didn't find either of them. |

At some point I have to click a little icon, but I can't find it. There's nothing to click on. Maybe it has got something to do with the fact that I haven't got a pc, but an imac. Subject: RE: looking for: choral sheet music From: John in Brisbane Date: 13 Sep 02 - 09:20 AM I've spent a long time looking on the Web and by far the best collection is at Harmonious Companion, with 100 examples of 2 to 4 part MIDI files - no lyrics unfortunately. Please see below for the list. http://www.channel1.com/users/gsilvis/hc.htm The other resource is Silvis Woodshed with a fantastic collection of multi part choral MIDIs. He has everything from Faure to Madrigals, but admittedly the folk stuff is but a minor part of the collection. He does include however the DEFINITIVE choral version of Battle Hymn of the Republic. This arrangement was written a lot of decades ago, but once you've sung it this way you'll want to do it forever. The males get the best bits and its probably SATTBB. http://www.channel1.com/users/gsilvis/ For anyone who is really into Madrigals there is a USA college site with some great MIDIs, but they're really sloppily labelled. I can't recall the site name for the moment but drop me a line if you're interested.

I might find some old Flemish music or so, but (Irish and Scottish) music that would take me years and years doing nothing else but going to flea markets. :) There's going to be a second hand book market in my hometown within two weeks .... My suggestion is to find a piano arrangement and try to piece together the soprano, alto, bass. You can find Loch Lomond here. [http://www.web-helper.net/PDMusic] Look in The Book of a Thousand Songs - search the L's. This is a common song that you may be able to find a choral arrangement for. Try searching on Google using the words for the song title and also the word "choral" or SATB. You can find many of the others by using this site. [http://sheetmusiconline.net] This site searches 8 different sites offering sheet music. The problem is...you really can't see the music before you buy it, and it may cost up to $7 in shipping charges just for sheet music which costs $1. Another thing you can do (besides looking for "piano or choral" arrangement) is to find a particular book, then go to one of the large book sites and read more about it. Maybe even purchase it used. An exaple: Brennan on the Moor is in the Golden Encyclopedia of Folk Music which you can purchase used for $12 instead of $20. I have The Wild Rover (not Irish Rover) in the Clancy Brothers Songbook, but it just has a melody line, words, chords, and an accompaniment in the bass. (you would have to construct an alto line) |

Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Add: choral sheet music From: GUEST,Three Chord Date: 12 Sep 02 - 05:33 PM I am just looking at an old songbook I picked up at a flea market for a quarter called, "357 Songs We Love to Sing" each is written in from two to four parts- there is a four part arrangement for "Loch Lomand", and a three part arrangement of "The Minstrel Boy" half a dozen each from Thomas Moore and Robert Burns--printed in 1938-- There are many collections like it floating around, as singing was once very popular(before families had two working parents and a TV in every room) and every school of every size had it's choir, choruses and glee clubs, as well as any number of informal singing groups-- You may find a stack of these in the back room at church or in a corner of the school's music library--and a large, old library in any downtown will, more likely than not, have a few dusty shelves of these items--The tastes of past times are not are own, so much of what you find will not satisfy contemporary definitions of traditional music, but there will be some gems that you can recover with the aid of a good photocopier or, if need, a fair music copiest-

And about myself : I'm not living in the UK, nor in the USA ; I'm from Belgium. That's probably the reason why I don't know whether all of these songs are Irish or not. This has printable sheet music online. Most of the songs you mention probably won't have been arranged for choirs, but you should be able to find Loch Lomond and possibly one or two others fairly easily. Music shops also often have arrangements of well-loved Irish songs, so you can try there. Are you in US or UK? Might make a difference.

Your best bet is to find someone who can arrange the music working from the melody. - or melody and chords. |

I am a member of a choir (young male and female adults) and I've been looking for the sheetmusic of a lot of Irish folk songs. But up to now I haven't found them anywhere. Well, I've got the "melody" and the lyrics of most of the songs, but what I need is choral sheetmusic => soprano, alt and bass + piano sheet music. I've been to several music shops and they all say this does not excist. Hard to believe this is true. I hope someone can help me find what I'm looking for. Thanks, Sylvie |
