I will be starting a new contract on Monday, and wondered whether there are any mid-week clubs or sessions in the area? (Friday to Sunday are no good as I will be doing a weekly commute). Thanks

I think there's something bluesey out that way - but some Basingstoke folkies come over to Reading, so I presume there can't be too much over there.

There is Bracknell Arts Centre on Wednesdays,Reading,at Pipers island but I'm afraid I can't remember which night although I think it's Sunday ( King Brilliant would know) and several things around here ( where I am, I mean), which would be about a 40 min drive, I guess.PM me if you want more details.

Check with Shire Folk on 01865 769366,evenings and weekends-Its the Folk Mag for the South Midlands, and well worth getting hold of.

Morty - how long is it since you went to Readifolk? They moved from Piper's Island at least a couple of years ago, and even managed to move again between booking me and Les Sullivan at the beginning of this year and us appearing there in July. I think they are currently at the Clifton Arms in Gosbrook Road, Caversham - definitely Sundays though, so probably no good for Pavane.

Is the monthly supper club (first Thursday) at the White Lion in Wherwell still going?

There used to be a session at The Fox in Fleet. I never went, of course, but heard about it. Might be worth giving them a call.

Alas, the Fox and Hounds in Fleet is no more as I have heard it.They knocked through to the back room, such a shame IMO as it had been running 35 years or more.

The White Lion, Wherwell, generally 1st and 3rd Thursday of the month I think, but definitely this week (18th) - a singaroud, I'll be there, unusually. So will Keith Kendrick and others involved in KK's later recording project.

(down the A303 towards Andover and turn left...)

The Wherewell singaround may be two monthly clubs in different pubs. If you can contact the band Random House Keith the base player used to run the White Lion one.
I spoke to someone at Bromyard or B'north who ran the other one.

But the White Lion has had a Thursday club for years ... and anyway is Doug Bailey's local, so anyone recording at Wildgoose is likely to be found there after they've finished recording....

Thank you, treewind, for the info. Most enjoyable evening in Wherwell, and I am looking forward to the next one.

(I was the one murdering Welsh tunes, as I am sure you have guessed.)

By the way, the words to The Woad song are in the database, although not quite the same as the ones I remember.

Main differences are:

verse 2:

Dress us more than these
Saxon warriors laced in stitches
Building beds for bugs in britches

and

Tramp up Snowdon ...

last line:

Go it, ancient B's

The discussion threads point to a possible author, as below

From Malcolm Douglas:

It seems that W. Hope Jones was a master at Eton, and wrote the song, c.1921, for the college's Boy Scout troop. ("Gilwell Camp Fire Song Book" and comments on the web.)

I remeber the "Go it, ancient B's " phrase and wondered where it has gone to.
