There are several references in the above list and thread to The Christian Classics Ethereal Hymnary, but no mention that I can see of its affiliate, Hymnary.org, which includes the entire database of the Dictionary of North American Hymnology (DNAH or DiNAH) as well as a growing corpus of additional material, and open to your help in expanding or improving it.

Richie, if I go directly to your website, using Netscape, your home page appears. The list of links on the left work except for: CDs and Recordings..., and Bluegrass Lyrics, which both come up blank.
With Internet Explorer, everything works. Out and out discrimination against Netscape people!

American Folk Hymns are poorly covered. Some at Lomax and the Smithsonian. Shape note material and Old Baptist would be a good place to start.

For researching earlier hymns ("All hymns printed anywhere in the world with English-language texts up to 1820, and their publication history up to that date"), The Hymn Tune Index: A Census of English-Language Hymn Tunes in Printed Sources from 1535 to 1820, 4-Volume Set, edited by NICHOLAS TEMPERLEY (Clarendon Press Oxford, 1998) is greatly helpful, though this is an index and contained no texts. The price is $550.00, but mercifully the Index itsef can be used online too (CLICK HERE).

The clicky thingy works for me.

I would like to focus on American hymns/ folk hymns etc. before 1925 and used George Pullen Jackson's work as one foundation. I guess we could start with the shape-note hymns (most of which I already have in my collections) and work our way up to 1925.

Everything worthwhile is a lot of work. I've put over 500 fiddle tune lyrics on my site including background info since August 2002 (I had started in June but my site crashed and I lost my work!). While I've been doing this I've written a 250 page book for Mel Bay as well as teaching 80 students a week and performing quite a bit. And that's just part of what I do!

Anyway- I think it can be done but it would take a couple of years. I'd just like to have some help.

Richie

Burke-

Thanks for your info. There doesn't seem to be any organized hymn/gospel index on the web (and there may not be one off the web either).

I'd be willing to undertake such a project but it would take some time. Currently I am putting fiddle tune lyrics that I have found mostly on-line: Click here

I am planning on doing early shape-note/gospel and hymn research at some point. I can put the data on my site or we could create a new site or link with Mudcat.

I'd like to know if there would be any interest and especially anyone willing to help with the research. The melodies could be made available or just the lyrics.

Any takers-suggestions?

Richie

There are some backgrouns here

Reporter Interactive Posts a new Hymn Story each week. You can find it under Reviews: History of Hymns. Before they redid the site there was also a list of the reviews that seems to have disappeared. If you do key word searches involving a particular you can find some. If you search on "Reynolds" you'll get a bunch, as he's the author of the histories. I think some are just gone in a black hole. I know I saw Amazing Grace there at one time & now I can't find it.

The best places for general information on the Shape Note tunes are: Warren Steel's Sacred Harp Singing and the Fasola Home Page. Neither one has really all that much information on the tunes. There's an e-mail discussion group where people ask for details, but I don't think the archive is on the web. There was an older list that folded & it's archives are, unfortunately, gone as there was good stuff there.

For composers, authors & dates you can find that on the Fasola home page. Scroll down to the Resource guides & go to the Online index to the 1991 revision. The texts supplied there have all the attributions that are in the published books.

Is there any site on-line that gives you background info about hymns like the Traditional Ballad Index or Ceolas: A Fiddler's Companion?

Or a site with info about shapenote tunes as found in George Pullen Jackson's books?

Thanks,

The Sacred Harp has 431 images...each between 70-120 megs

see here

It should be possible to download it efficiently with one of the special download manager programs........I have used a program called "Go!zilla" for projects, but there are others. (The usual trick is to run 3-4 files at a time,,,or break up a file into parts and re-assemble it.)

here is one of the best DLEXPERT 0.99 (748 KB)

NOTE: as of version 0.95, program is once again Freeware. DLExpert is a multi-thread resuming downloading software. It makes full use of resources of the client and the server to download files from the Internet at the most speedy rate. DLExpert can divide the file into any parts, at most more than 100 parts (NOT ONLY 5 OR 6 PARTS). Each of them will be downloaded by one thread, so different parts can be downloaded simultaneously, resulting in speedy downloading. DLExpert supports HTTP and FTP, also HTTP and FTP proxy. Its function of auto-dial, auto-hangup, schedule downloading and auto-shutdown make it convenient.

When this thread stabilises, I'll add at least the most important ones from here to the library.

The Harmonia Sacra, A Compilation of Genuine Church Music: Comprising a Great Variety of Metres, Harmonized for Four Voice: Together with a Copious Explication of the Principles of Vocal Music. Exemplified and Illustrated with Tables, in a Plain and Comprehensive Manner, by Joseph Funk and Sons. 25thed. Intercourse Pennsylvania: Good Books, 1993

This is a Mennonite book.

This site is a little confusing. Follow the link near the bottom to The Harmonia Sacra Handbook. That's where index to authors, composers, first lines, etc. is. Get your page number an go to the Typeset music for the words & music in pdf files of 10 pages each. The first type page links to 7 shape settings; which is how the book was published. There's a link on the 7 shape page to 4 shape settings because a lot of us Sacred Harp singers can't handle 7 but want to sing the music.

Masato, I could kiss you!!! I did not realize that an early edition of The Sacred Harp was online. Their original was in really good condition & very easy to read, unlike most of the reprints I have seen up to now.

Now, if I can just figure out how to print to whole thing at one time!

My family and I went to the local Unitarian church for the Sept 11 service, partly because we figured it would have better music than our Catholic parish would have. I think we were right.
I hadn't seen the current Unitarian Universalist Hymnal, Singing the Living Tradition, which is chock-full of great songs. In my search for a copy of the hymnal, I found two Websites that have tunes from the hymnal, The Williamsburg Unitarian Universalist Music Page, and Public Domain Hymn Tunes from the Unitarian Universalist Hymnal.
That inspired me ot look a little further and see what other online hymnals I coult find. Many of us are familiar with the granddaddy of them all, the Cyber Hymnal, http://www.cyberhymnal.org/, but I'm wondering what others are out there. Any contributions?
