Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Words for brown eyed girl From: GUEST,adavis@truman.edu Date: 15 Sep 02 - 11:21 AM Maybe the mind's in the maundegreen gutter, but I always heard "laughin' and a-runnin' naked." I KNOW my puritanical local radio station spliced the final lines (and clumsily) to produce: "Sometimes I'm overcome thinkin' 'bout/Laughin' and a-runnin', hey-hey/Behind the stadium with you..." Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Words for brown eyed girl From: allanwill Date: 15 Sep 02 - 11:51 AM I read in a site about songs banned from being played on the radio that in 1967 "Radio programmers pass on Van Morrison's Brown-eyed Girl because the lyrics reference premarital sex and teenage pregnancy. Morrison cuts an alternative version with more acceptable lyrics" Allan |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Words for brown eyed girl From: Bullfrog Jones Date: 15 Sep 02 - 03:53 PM Adam's right -- it's a really clumsy edit. Listen on headphones and you'll hear a clunk either side of the line. BJ |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Words for brown eyed girl From: Murray MacLeod Date: 15 Sep 02 - 06:47 PM I do so hate to be pedantic, but, shouldn't the line "Sha la la la la la la la la la la dee dah" read "Sha la la la la la la la la la la la dee dah ? Murray

Subject: Lyr Add: BEAUTIFUL BROWN EYES From: Peace Date: 13 Sep 08 - 12:24 AM BEAUTIFUL BROWN EYES (Alton Delmore - Arthur Smith - Jerry Capehart) Willie I love you my darling I've loved you with all my heart Tomorrow we might have been married But rambling has kept us apart. Beautiful, beautiful brown eyes Beautiful, beautiful brown eyes Beautiful, beautiful brown eyes I'll never love blue eyes again. (I'll never love blue eyes again.) Willie, I'll love you forever I've loved you from the start Tomorrow I would have been happy But rambling had drawn us apart. Down through the barroom he staggered And fell down by the door The very last words that he uttered I'll never get drunk anymore. Beautiful, beautiful brown eyes Beautiful, beautiful brown eyes Beautiful, beautiful brown eyes I'll never love blue eyes again. I'll never love blue eyes again... |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Brown Eyed Girl (Van Morrison) From: Lonesome EJ Date: 13 Sep 08 - 02:11 AM The line In the misty morning fog with our, our hearts a-thumping And you, my brown-eyed girl, I've always heard and sung as In the misty morning sun, well our hearts they felt brand new, my brown-eyed girl, which may be wrong, but I like better. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Brown Eyed Girl (Van Morrison) From: GUEST,Steve Date: 13 Sep 08 - 06:04 PM Singing something different because you misheard it is one thing... I do it all the time as do most people! Continuing to sing it differently once you know the real words because you like your version better than the writer's smacks of arrogance. If you don't like the words Van Morrison wrote then don't sing the song! |

If you don't like the words Van Morrison wrote then don't sing the song! Boo! Hiss! Sing whatever you like. If your listeners, if you have any, don't like it, they'll let you know ~ at which time you can reassess your approach. I listen to, and sing, quite a few Bob Dylan songs. Among the many which have been recorded more than once, you can find any number of lines rewritten, or at least sung differently, every time out. Example: In the first verse of "When I Paint My Masterpiece," there's a line sung variously as "...where I got me a date with a pretty little girl from Greece," and "...with Botticelli's niece." I much prefer "Botticelli's niece," always sing it that way, and am glad to have been given the choice. Of course, I'm talking about a situation where the songwriter himself gave us multiple versions, which is not exactly the same as singing one's own revision. Still, I think it's perfectly OK to sing anything the way you like best. The singer's enjoyment and conviction always makes for a stronger performance. |
