Subject: Bede Jarrett's Prayer From: Mooh Date: 15 Sep 02 - 01:05 PM I lost my sister Barbara on Friday night. She died in her sleep after a long defiant battle with cancer. She was a kind, generous, talented soul, with the best inate defences and yet she still had to leave us. I have all that I need from her except longevity. I have her love, and she has mine. This is a good time for me to share a prayer which my Dad carried with him in his wallet most of his life. He first heard it, likely as a child in the '20s or '30s at St.John's Peterborough Ontario. In his life as a clergyman he always used it at the graveside. If he were here now, he would say it for his daughter. I'm sorry I haven't yet researched the history of this prayer. Maybe that will give me something to do over the next couple of days to ease my grief, or maybe if anyone knows about it here, it can be shared. Bede Jarrett's Prayer We seem to give him back to You, dear Lord, who gave him to us. As you did not lose him in giving, so we have not lost him by his return. For what is yours is ours always. And life is eternal, and love is immortal, and what we call death is only an horizon which is the limit of our sight. Lift us up, strong Son of God, that we may see further. Open our eyes that we may see more clearly, that in drawing nearer to You, we may draw nearer to those whom we love who are with you. Amen. Peace, Mooh (Mike Crocker).

Subject: RE: Bede Jarrett's Prayer From: katlaughing Date: 15 Sep 02 - 04:00 PM Oh, Mike, that is beautiful, thanks for sharing it and for telling us about Barbara. I am sorry that she had to leave. I always like to remember a quote from Delaney sisters who wrote "Having Our Say" when they both over 100 years old. For over fifty years after his death they still would have a special birthday dinner for their "Papa" because they would say something like, they prefer to "celebrate to remember," than mourn. With thoughts of peace, kat |

Subject: RE: Bede Jarrett's Prayer From: Mooh Date: 03 Jun 05 - 10:08 PM I am refreshing this thread from September 2002 in response to those who need to take comfort in such words, like several of us who have lost loved ones recently. Thanks to gnu and brucie for leading me to remember it. Peace, Mooh. |
