Subject: Song - Won't you come over to my House
From: GUEST,debramccann@hotmail.com
Date: 21 Nov 00 - 03:37 PM

I am looking for the lyrics to a song my Grandmother (now deceased) used to sing to us called "Won't you come over to my House". Particulary, the verse leading into the song. I'm hoping someone will know it! Tks, Debra

Does anyone know the rest of this - "Won't you come over to my house - won't you come over and play - I've lots of playthings, a dolly or two - I live in the house cross the way - I'll buy you candy and sweet things - I'll put your hair in a curl - if you will come over to my house - and play like you're my litle girl."

P.S. This is not the song"Playmate" Thanks so much.

Subject: Lyr Add: WON'T YOU COME OVER TO MY HOUSE?

Found at the Levy Sheet Music collection, and transcribed by me:

WON'T YOU COME OVER TO MY HOUSE?
(Words, Egbert Van Alstyne. Music, Harry Williams. 1906)
[They also wrote "In the Shade of the Old Apple Tree" and many other songs.]

The time was in June. The bees hummed a tune.
The perfume of rose filled the air,
When just over the way sat a baby one day,
All alone and no one seemed to care.
But one passerby turned and looked with a sigh
At the tears and the eyes swollen red,
Then close to her breast, the young darling she pressed,
And tenderly to her she said:

CHORUS: Won't you come over to my house? Won't you come over and play?
I've lots of playthings: a dolly or two. We live in the house 'cross the way.
I'll give you candy and sweet things. I'll put your hair in a curl.
Won't you come over to my house and play that you're my little girl?

Perhaps you don't know that not long ago,
These toys I am giving to you
Were my little girl's, yes, my own little pearl's,
And her eyes were like yours, large and blue.
But one night I found that the angels came 'round,
And they took her way up to the sky.
So, don't stay away, but come over each day,
Or you'll make your new mama cry. CHORUS.

[The only recording I have found of this is by NRBQ on "Diggin' Uncle Q".

(Not to be confused with an unrelated blues song that is also titled "Won't You Come Over to My House?".)]

Historic American Sheet Music (from Duke University) gives clearer images. You can read small types on the copyright info.

Won't you come over to my house (New York, New York, Jerome H. Remick, 1906).

Won't you come over to my house (the same sheet music from Levy).

Bob - if you click the 2nd of the 3 links (with 1906 date) in the post three above this (by masato sakurai) you will get the sheet music images. Right-click and Save-as to copy them to your computer.

Mick
