Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Under the tree Rosemary From: Bonnie Shaljean Date: 17 Sep 02 - 01:56 PM This song was written by Anne Lister, though I believe she spells the title Rosemarie, with the accent on the last syllable. It's a medieval-style tale about a maiden who is deserted by her faithless lover - but with a twist at the end. I don't know how Anne would feel about her work being posted in a public forum, but if you PM me with an email address I'll forward it to her and let her decide what she wants to do. I really can't act without her permission, so this is the best I can do. It's really is a lovely song - |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Under the tree Rosemary From: cetmst Date: 18 Sep 02 - 10:32 AM Anne Dodson recorded Rosemarie on her 'Against the Moon' album with Anne Lister who was touring Maine at the time. Beech Hill Music, Box 14, Camden, Maine. Anne Dodson's notes say Anne Lister took the song and melody from a traditional Flemish song and constructed the translation. I did not find the song on Anne Lister's website but she has written and recorded many fine songs mainly about medieval legends. |
Subject: Lyr Add: ROSEMARIE (Anne Lister) From: GUEST,Wally Macnow Date: 17 Nov 18 - 07:11 AM I don't know if anyone is still looking for this. It is a beautiful song with a tune that I find haunting. Transcribed from Anne Dodson's "Against The Moon" Rosemarie I came last night across the green fields I came last night across the green land And there I saw a nut tree stand Under the tree, Rosemarie There I saw a nut tree stand Sweetest my love. And under the nut tree stood a maiden And under the nut tree stood a maid Talking with a nightingale Under the tree, Rosemarie Talking with a nightingale Sweetest my love. Oh nightingale how sweetly you whisper Oh nightingale how sweetly you sing Oh, will you take a letter to him? Under the tree, Rosemarie Will you take a letter to him? Sweetest my love. He took the letter from her fingers He took the letter from her hand And he’s flown high o’er sea and land Under the tree, Rosemarie He’s flown high o’er sea and land Sweetest my love. And by the window, there she waited And by the window, there she stayed Oh is my love alive or dead? Under the tree, Rosemarie Is my love alive or dead? Sweetest my love I could not sleep this whole night over I could not sleep this whole night through Oh where’s the message my love gave you? Under the tree, Rosemarie Where’s the message my love gave you? Sweetest my love Your love sent you a message of iron Your love sent you a message of ice He says he’s taken another one Under the tree, Rosemarie He says he’s taken another wife Sweetest my love If he has found another lover If he has found another one Well, I’ll not grieve him all my life Under the tree, Rosemarie I’ll not grieve him all my life Sweetest my love For I will find another lover For I will find another man For what one does, the other one can Under the tree, Rosemarie What one does, the other one can Sweetest my love |
