A member of my staff team, only early fifties, a smashing fiesty lady had a small 'cloud' in one eye for a couple of months.After much nagging ( mostly from me) she went to see about it.It turned out to be tumour.

I am devastated to report that it is malignant.At best she will lose the eye, at worst it has already spread to her liver ( which is a common occurence apparently with this type of cancer) and there will be little more they can do for her.

I don't want to scare anyone and this is rare but please,if you notice anything at all odd in your sight, don't put it down to your computer, or your age or tiredness, get it checked out at once.

Horrid to hear, and I hope your co-worker suffers the least possible consequences.

Query for us non-medic types, by a "cloud" do you mean one that she could see, or one that was visible to the passer-by who looked her in the eye?

No, we couldn't see anything and she was only aware of a small patch of cloudy vision in the corner of one eye, not constant, so she thought perhaps she was just tired or suffering from eye strain.I think most of us would think it a not very important thing which was why I was keen to share this.

So if you think you have a cataract and you are waiting till it gets REAL bad to visit the doc, it might not be a cataract?

Absolutely Susan, that is exactly what this colleague thought and,if I hadn't played the heavy, might not have gone to her GP for months yet....by which time it would almost certainly have been too late.At least at the moment there is a chance she will live.

My mother, after a recent stroke, developed an ovarian cyst which was benign thankfully, and two cataracts for which she awaits surgery. Suspiciously, I think there's a connection. However, she has never delayed in getting treatment even though she dislikes doctor and hospital visits, and this is the key for her. Get treatment, get it now, fight with all your might, and get over any reluctance.

Oh wow. We have a LOT of older folks here in the parish, and they are all sure that they have The Catarack. Cuz it's normal to be gettin' The Catarack at a certain age....

Very sorry about your co-worker, Morticia. Thanks for sending out the warning.

It goes for macular degeneration, too. Not so serious as cancer, but it destroys sight, sometimes very rapidly. But new studies show that large doses of zinc and lutein often can help to stabilize if not reverse. I went for exam when I noticed I could no longer clearly see the red digital clock numbers with my left eye, only my right. Diagnosed about 2 years ago and have been taking supplements and eating lots of chard/spinach/romaine, all very high in lutein. No reversal, but no worse either. I go in for a check Thurs. and will be holding my breath.
