Hi
The shand family have set up a website www.jimmyshand.com and are contactable by email. They are also issuing many of sir Jimmy's recordings on CD and publishing some of his many compositions for the first time - well worth looking at!

There are some great Jimmy Shand stories. "I see you keep a bee" is obviously the best known, but I heard rather a good one recently, forgive me for any liberties taken with the facts...

Apparently, there was a fiddle/violin convention being held in Edinburgh in the early nineties, attended by luminaries from all over the world. Yehudi Menuhin was there , and while trying out one of the fiddles on offer played a couple of Paganini caprices.

In the middle of Menuhin's impromptu performance, Scottish dance band leader Ian Powrie walked in and listened to the tail end. After he had finished, to rapturous applause, Powrie turned round to his companions and declaimed, " Y'know, that man's good enough to play with Shand"

The Jimmy Shand canon is a long and distinguished one, right from the early days when he used to record old 78s on the Beltona label. I'm surprised that you didn't find too much info on the net about him. He was an institution on the scottish country dance music scene. Try this site for recordings available
You might also try the Radio Scotland site, which you can access through www.bbc.co.uk, and by clicking on the Radio Scotland link you can access current radio programs. Try Take the floor, which is a Saturday evening programme introduced by Robbie Shepherd, who is himself a bit of a Scottis institution. If you want any info PM me. Good luck.....Giok

My sweetie recently gave me a rescued Jimmy Shand and his Band LP, and the search for other information has left me stumped. Is there anything other than the Cameron biography easily available to someone in the States? What are other recordings I should look for? Is there any recording that you might think to be definative Shand? (Mudcat searching only left me with a couple of obituary threads and a delightful "Don't sit on my Jimmy Shand's" song)
squeezeboxed thanks for any information,
~JE
