Subject: VanRonk's 'Silver Dagger'
From: GUEST,G Martin

I just heard Dave Van Ronk's version of Silver Dagger "Oh Molly dear, go ask your mother..." with lyrics and a tune I was unfamiliar with. Can anyone provide me with the lyrics/chords to his version?

It seems like a simple C - G, C - G, G - D, G -D - G formula. Can it be this simple?

Thanks

I can't find it on the web; how are the lyrics and melody different from the only one in the DT that has a Click to play link at the bottom? That one sounds both minor and modal (Aeolian?) to me.

Lotsa lyrics in threads 35233 and 50807:
Drowsy Sleeper-Silver Dagger-Molly etc
East VA-Silver Dagger etc
I don't think van Ronk is there but Baez, etc. are.

Ian and Sylvia have a great recording of this. "Greatest Hits", maybe.

The van Ronk version is different from any I've seen before. Not the drowsy sleeper versions or the Baez or Ian & Sylvia. It's a really nice recording. I don't hear any minor notes, but my ear ain't that good.

I have these lyrics from Dave's version.
Very different from any other version I've seen before.
Does anyone know anything about this one?

Gary

SILVER DAGGER
arr. Dave Van Ronk

Oh, Molly dear, go ask your mother
If you may be a bride of mine.
If she says yes, we will be married.
If she says no, we'll run away.

Oh, Willie dear, I dare not ask her.
She's in her chamber takin' a rest,
And at her side, a silver dagger
To kill the one that I love best.

Oh, Molly dear, go ask you father
If you may be a bride of mine.
If he says yes, we will be married.
If he says no we'll run away.

Oh Willie dear, I dare not ask him.
He's in his chamber takin' a rest,
And at his side, a silver dagger
To kill the one that I love best.

Then she took out her silver dagger
Runs it into her lily-white breast,
Saying, "Goodbye, father, and goodbye, mother.
Goodbye to the one that I love best."

And he took out his silver dagger,
Plunged it into his lily-white breast,
Saying, "Goodbye, father, and goodbye, mother.
Goodbye to the one that I love best."

Let's all take out our silver daggers,
Plunge them into our lily-white breasts,
Saying, "Goodbye, father, and goodbye, mother.
Goodbye to the ones that we love best."

Von Ronk's Silver Dagger is simply an identical version of "Katie Dear/Molly Dear" with early recordings by Blue Sky Boys (1938) etc. The only difference Von Ronk's last verse. More info is available in an early thread-East Virginia- if you look.

Gary,

I have the chords to the traditional version (Katie Dear/Silver Dagger) that I play in two keys G and C. I don't have Von Ronk's recording. If you want the chords I play I will post.

Baez/Parton Version:

Capo 7

(G) Don't sing love (D) songs you'll wake my (G) mother
She's sleeping (D) here right by my (Em) side
And in her right (C) hand a silver (Am) dagger
She says that (Em) I can't be your (D) bride

All men are false said my mother
They'll tell you wicked loving lies
And the very next evening they'll court another
Leave you alone to pine and sigh

My daddy he's a handsome devil
He's got a chain of five miles long
And on every ring a heart does dangle
Of another maid he's loved and wronged

So court another tender maiden
And hope that she will be your wife
For I have been warned and I've decided
To sleep alone all of my life

Oo ho ho ho oh oh oh oh
