The original thread was just tooooooo long..here's a fresh start and my choices....Tell Laura I Lover her, Ray Peterson I think did this dreadful thing. "Swingin School", Bobby Rydell...arggggghhhh. Some songs are so bad that they are good in an odd way. My favourite bad song is "Lickin' A Chicken" by Eve Boswell.

truth be told , a more adventurish hybrid of a list " too vast to quantify" would be the worst Pop-songs of the Beatles ; self-admittedly sick of the pop-fop-fab-four marketing they were a aprty to

. I'd begin by nominating Sir MacCartney's " You say Hello, and I say Goodbye". Absolutely the worst spew of what would be today considered pure gold for reprocessed SpiceGirls or Brittany squatter-fodder. MacCartney is not unknown for his weakeness for showbizzy "schmaltz" tunes & lyrics. Most of the Wings stuff was pure tripe in this vein.

there ,that should stir the Liverpudley's ;-)

Taliesn didn't mention Why Don't We Do It In The Road, which is lyrically limited but fun! As was Neanderthal Man by Hotlegs (from which grew 10cc). You want real syrup and cliches - try and find an unbroken copy of Wendy by Johnny Gentle!

There have been so many mentioned that I couldn't keep track. Here-after reading 350+ posts are my favorites - (recap)

"Feelings" has to be the top. "Teen Angel" surely equals it! "Afternoon Delight" "MacArthur Park," "Ballad of the Green Berets." "Chain Gang" "My Way" "Horse With No Name" "After the Loving" "Tie a Yellow Ribbon 'round the Old Oak Tree" "Cherish" "Leader of the Pack" "Patches my darling of old shanty-town" "Go Tell Laura I Love Her" "White Sport Coat and a Pink Carnation") "Paper Roses"

And my own additions -

"Splish Splash" (I was taking a bath all upon a Saturday night) and "Artificial Flowers" (Made for ladies of fashion to wear - the child dies at the end, I am surprised digitrad hasn't grabbed it) Both done by Bobby Darin "Big John" about a cave-in In the jungle, the mighty jungle, "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" - I lived in Japan when that came out, the Far East Network did kid pop for an hour Saturday night. ("Top Twenty"). They sent someone to the States to see if we had the wrong version, and surprised us all by coming back with the same one. In spite of all her learnin'. to the bad I kept on turnin' "Momma Tried" is a family favorite. We were sure it was a joke, till a fan told us it was meant to be serious. "Running Bear" loved little White Dove/ with a love that couldn't die "Are you going to San Francisco? You better wear flowers in your hair". - What were they thinking? (someone else got it too.) "Kisses Sweeter than Wine" Get Michael out of his #*@$% boat please!

"Artificial Flowers" was written as a parody of a turn-of-the-century tearjerker by Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick for their 1960 musical TENDERLOIN. The Vegased-up version referred to above is bizarre on several counts.

(quote) "Taliesn didn't mention Why Don't We Do It In The Road,"

There's a good reason for that. I was assuming this list required songs that actually were published as singles and registered on the charts.

The above mentioned little "throwaway" obscurity from the Beatles' White Album hardly qualifies and is not even worth mention. Unless it was published as the "B" side to that other golen oldie; "Revolution No 9".

Can't ya just hum it? ;-) Bottomline: John & Yoko on Acid: Bad.

More "worst Beatles" Pop songs. Most of whatever was givien Ringo to attempt to pretend to sing. Need we be reminded of "Octopus's Garden" That dreadful piece with an electronically "warbled" underwater piano from White Album, "Don't make me Cry".Forget his solo albums.

Meanwhile the MacCartney "Wings" songbook contains Pop-slop too numerous to mention.

I'm only waxing Beatles because of the release of the Special Edition DVD of "A Hard Day's Night" which casts the above mentioned dross for what it is in high relief.

Hey, Taliesn: I think Why Don't We Do It In The Road is a kick... just boys having fun... with no attempt at writing a classic song. I just bought the DVD of Hard Day's Night and am looking forward to watching it. Again, I thought the movie was a lot of high energy, "cheeky" fun. The songs are early enough that they don't have much sophistication, but neither does That'll Be The Day, or Oh, Boy. They are what they are, and the movie is very entertaining. If we exclude Ringo for not being much of a singer, there goes a big batch of people who sing folk music, along with him. :-)

Good to see you here, though.

Jerry, Your'e spot-on I could'nt agree more. Much of the Beatle was just 'lads' taking the piss out of record companies who would have accepted any dross put out by them, if it sells stack it high, even gossip! No real scousers (people born in Liverpool to those who don't know) would really critise any comments regarding the Beatles stuff, it did what they wanted it to do..earn them a bloody fortune!!!

Worst song lyrics ever, try the 'British National Anthem'

And, to whoever wrote that Barry Manilow wrote "I Write the Songs--" (I think it was in the other monster 'worst songs' thread)--nope! He didn't! He wrote *some* songs, but he didn't write *this* song! Just recorded it. (It was written & composed by a guy named Bruce Johnston--whether you like it or not! ;^)

(quote) "I just bought the DVD of Hard Day's Night and am looking forward to watching it. Again, I thought the movie was a lot of high energy, "cheeky" fun. The songs are early enough that they don't have much sophistication, ...."

I guess I wasn't clear enough in my enjoyment of the work on "A Hard Day's Night". I cited "A Hard Day's Night" as a benchmark of *quality *against which the other songs are measured by and ,IMO , found substantially wanting. Obviously they were running out of steam during rise of the Yoko years . "A Hard Day's Night's " music is as solid a document of the Beatle's *quality* Pop as one can appreciate & indulge in.

I'll gladly give MacCartney his due with wonderful Pop-pieces like "Penny Lane". Honestly compare that with the likes of the insipid "You Say Goodbye and I Say Hello" and you'll understand better where I coming from.

(quote) "If we exclude Ringo for not being much of a singer, there goes a big batch of people who sing folk music, along with him. :-)

Yeah ,but atleast those with staying power could put something of mewaning in the performance of their lyrics. Nothing of whoch could *ever* be said of anything Ringo ever produced. the closest he ever came was his cover of "Act Naturally". Fair enough? ;-)

Yeah ,I know . I'm too particular about music the way i am about my nutrition. We all indulge in the "Junk food" for fun ,but , with my music listening time becoming evermore limited I kind of chose music that genuinely *does* something for me. Hence my semi-regular lamenting at the chronic wasteland that MTV celebrates & exaccerbates .

Let's just say I've come to feel that life's too short to be spent stuck in traffic either. A lot of pop music is like that to me.

For the Beatles sub-genre, I nominate "Mr. Moonlight".I don't know if they wrote it, but whoever did shouldn't have. Overall, I've always been particularly nauseated by "Last Kiss", committed by J. Frank Wilson and the Cavalliers.

"Alone Again, Naturally". Oh, and "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face", less for the sentiment than for its dirge-like, yet aimless plodding(though this song is not charmingly bad like all those mentioned above)

Mehitabel, that is a killer set list--it would be a great night! I would throw in "This time we almost made the pieces fit, Didn't we Girl?" and "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother"--

What kind of music do you *like*, Taleisn? Your taste in bad music is a bit weak--those tunes aren't tasteless enough to be truly bad--

JJ, I really appreciate your info on "Artificial Flowers". I wondered about that one. I sort of thought that a man who got major hits out of "Splish Splash", "Mack the Knife" and "Clementine" really had no idea what the public might buy. Knowing the history of the song always helps. What, otherwise, would we do with "Springtime for Hitler"?
I would forgive the Beatles almost anything for changing the face of popular music. During all the days they were actively recording, I can't think of anybody trying to push "Billy Joe McCallister off the (four syllable) bridge", or anything similar. Maybe I just wasn't listening.
My son, who is young enough to be sneered at by unwary Baby Boomers, was once taken to task for his generation's taste. "In my day the lyrics were always meaningful." His response was "Yes, of course. I am the walrus kookookachoo.
Is the "One Last Kiss" referred to above (or earlier in the thread)the one from "Bye Bye Birdie"? Surely that was meant to be bad.
Amergin, you are very sweet and forgiving.
MTed, where do you live? On the night of that set, I will be on the other side of the country (or very drunk). Thanks for the kind words. I've never heard of the two songs you named. I must be the wrong generation.

(quote) "What kind of music do you *like*, Taleisn? "

Ahhhhh , there's the clue. I was raised on my parents tastes in the orchestral symphonies of the usual suspects, though I would classify the catalogue of albums I grew up listening to as predominantly "Fantasia"-type pieces ( I still get delightful chills from the 1st mysterious chords of Dukas' "Sorceror's Apprentice"); this is to say image-inducing/storytelling pieces. I've always taken a particular shine to Prokofiev as well. Then throw in my discovery of particularly symphonic movie soundtracks ( Thanks to elementary school exposure to film strips images accompanying the playing and storytelling of Tchaikowshy's "Nutcracker Suite" & Prokofiev's "Peter and the Wolf" I've always asociated artistic imagery to this music.)

Then throw in the rise of the predominantly British wave of virtuoso musicians starting with the likes of Cream who introduced more than a little Jazz-fusion with electrified blues, but I'd found the British so-called progresive-rock bands far more classically influenced. Yeah I'm still listening to YES & ELP and such.I credit Kieth Emerson for getting really igniting my love of Aaron Copland's work. I was already fired up by the "West Side Story" Suite before K.Emerson's interpretions.

Throw in the really wonderful new crop of cinematic soundtrack works that *work* as music on their own: a most listened to sampling of soundtracks include James Horner's "Field of Dreams" , Trevor Jones' "The Dark Crystal", Randy Newman's "The Natural", "Shawshank Redemption" & the new "Road to Perdition". along with sci-fi soundtracks from Bernard Hermann's " Journet to the Center of the Earth" to Jerry Goldsmith's "Alien" . More "contemporary" work includes Stewart Copland ( dummer of "The Police") soundtrack to "Rumblefish" as well as what I've always refered to a "Film Noir Jazz" or "Cop Jazz".

So where does folk fit into all of this? Melody ,melody ,melody and *then* unique character of voice. Those that I still listen to ; Joni Mitchel , James Taylor, dose Mamas & dem Papas, Simon & Garfunkel & Crosby,Stills, Nash then Young constitutes folk-Pop to me that endures. Dylan never caught my ear no matter how much I was *told* I was *supposed* to revere his genius by the older brothers & sisters of my school friends. My favorite is still "Tangled up in Blue" though.

Though I've never been inclined to buy or listen to any of their albums I love the filmed concert of the last live perfromance of The Band ( now DVD ) "The Last Waltz".

That's about as concise a capsule as I can manage. Sorry if I've already overdone it. Aren't you glad you asked? ;-)

(quote) "Your taste in bad music is a bit weak--those tunes aren't tasteless enough to be truly bad-- "

Oh i was juts trying to narow the focus for sanity's sake. But if you really want truly bad taste well: Everything Sonny & Cher

There those names should have had the equivalent effect of fingernails doing an concerto across a blackboard. ;-)

Well it's really all of a mere matter of being exposed to it I s'pose and I genuinely enjoyed the soundtrack so artfully used in "O Brother ,Where Art Thou".

In any event I always enjoy well-performed "live " music of almost any kind.

(quote) "Oh, my Taliesn, no Cat Stevens?"

All I gave was a spur-of-the-moment & off-the-top-o-me-head list of what I still love to listen too when asked what I like. Yeah I remember the Cat. ( prefered Donovan ) Never was moved to actually "buy" any of his albums , though. I got my quota of listening exposure at other friends' dorms, apts, dens, car radios. Same with Carol King . Always much more preferred Carly Simon's voice and material. Still do. Should've mentioned her. Forgot Ricky Lee Jones as well. Just mentioning Joni Mitchel on a quick list does that.

I believe I offered a thread on Loudon Wainwright III. Not enough honorable mention and credit due given to this prolific talent whom is a true "folk" singer/songwriter/ poet.

But this was supposed to be about the *worst* Pop songs and I thought calling the Beatles , together & individually, to task for theirs was appropriate.

From what I can gather from occassinal visits to the Country Music Channel there's plenty of over-commercialized Pop-trap there too , but since I've already gone out on a limb calling the Beatles to task ( forget the wave of Brit invasion Pop-fop-effluvia sucking like lampreys in the Beatles wake) I'm not about to then launch into a worst Pop-country music list. That's for other honest souls to call attention to.

Anyway , I'm now in the mood to play that new "Road to Perdition" soundtrack CD for inspiration whilst at my digital drawing board. ;-)

(quote) "I don't know Taliesn, your tastes are a bit, shall we say, mainstream--"

Really? Most young folk I come into contact with are pretty oblivious ,and some proud of it , to the classics and a "who even notices , forget listens , to a soundtrack unless it's Matrix-thrash or Rave-Techno." reponse.

I guess I should clarify what I use music for. I have been drawing and sketching to music for all my life and since I began this practice to my parents' symphonic classics I've been kind of hot-wired to best be inspired at my drawing board ,now digital , most to instrumental ( virtuoso or orchestral ) music. This goes from Leo Kotke/Preston Reed/ Micheal Hedges/Steve Tibbets for solo guitartists to the mentioned film "Fantasia"-style soundtracks to elaborate symphonies.

To me , extreme virtuoso musicianship is hardly what one could possibly call *mainstream*. ;-)

I also find I'm distracted from my work by the human voice singing words, especially if it's gifted & beautiful , because I'll want to split my attention to the voiced words. I listen to songs when I'm on a break and/or stuck for a new idea.

(quote) "I'd advise wakening those musical tastebuds with regular trips to http://www.honkingduck.com or to http://clik.to/recordlady-- "

I know you mean well, but you can't begin to comprehend how thoroughly awake & alive my artistic life is with the regular doses of an already vast library of complex soundtracks and symphonies that I continue to be enriched and inspired by. It would take the rest of my life just to try and discover all of the classics , let alone film soundtracks, for golden nugget discoveries that set my muse in motion.

Also I have a wide variety of friends whom already regularly expose me to as wide a variety of music. But I know what works for me when in my inner sanctum at my drawing board .

The results speak for themselves so i'll stick to my brand of poison. ;-)

Sure all of those are bad. But has anyone mentioned the stomach-turning embarassment, the spiritual nadir of our so-called civilization, the vapid vacume, the sucking sound of the descent into hell of "Yummy, Yummy, Yummy, I Got Love in My Tummy"? Sung by goofy youths who had apparently all tragically undergone laryngectomies so that they had to sing through their noses?

Now that's ugly.

Sonny wrote that one. The Beat Goes On was one of mine. "Teenybopper's the newborn King uh-huh". Top that, smart guy.

Cher!!! (gasp!) I have always worshipped you from afar, even though I think that a lot of the stuff you did with Sonny was, well, pretty dreadful...

But I truly loved your cover of Dylan's "All I Really Want To Do" and some of the other early stuff like that, plus I think your movies are very, very good. You are definitely one of the most extraordinary personalities of our time, no question about it.

Thanks for gracing the Mudcat with a brief visit. And you called me "smart guy"...(swoon)...this is almost as good as being told to F--- off by Bob Dylan.

I'm serious. You are the one and only, Cher. Cleopatra would have felt insecure in your presence.

Taliesn,

My comment was more than a well meaning but misplaced suggestion--it was more of reminder to you about where you are. This being the sort of forum that it is, those two sites contain, if not our Holy Grail, at least a one of the better reflections of the North American portions of it--

If your musical interests lead in other directions, that is fine--but you seem to be saying that you are too good to listen to the music that is important to us--which is very bad form--

Kee-rist!

I just got back from Rombos Restaurant where I was subjected to the usual hour of radio goo-goo, radio ga-ga repetitious same goddamn 50 lousy songs they always play, and...

I have the ultimate entry for this thread.

**** "Endless Love" ****

This piece of unadulterated crap goes on way, way too long, with Lionel Ritchie and Diana Ross ululating around each other like a pair of lovesick motown-drunk trained seals.

For the full horror go to this site and listen:

http://www.webmistris.com/endlesslovelyrics.html

And then, as if that weren't enough, listen to Mariah F-ing Carrey and Luther Vandross wail this turkey...on the very same site, trying hard to outdo Ritchie and Ross in the melodrama sweepstakes. There seems to be some heavy breathing added to the instrumental soundtrack, oddly enough...

Lionel Ritchie wrote the colossally dreadful and predictable lyric, and no doubt made a bloody fortune on it.

Consider these words:

HIM: My love, there's only you in my life (YEAH, RIGHT..USUAL STORY)

The only thing that's right (THAT DOESN'T SAY MUCH FOR A LIFE, DOES IT?)

HER: My first love, (I BET!)

HIM: Yeah

HER: You're every breath that I take You're every step I make (WE GOT FULL BLOWN OBSESSION HERE, NO DOUBT ABOUT IT)

HER: And I

HIM: And I

BOTH: I want to share All my love with you (WHAT? NONE LEFT OVER FOR THE DOG? THE POSTMAN? YOUR MOTHER? HUMANITY?)

HIM: No one else will do... (OH, OF COURSE NOT. HOW COULD THEY?)

HER: Hummm

HIM: You know it (DOH!)

HER: And your eyes

HIM: Your eyes, your eyes

BOTH: They tell me how much you care Ooh yes, you will always be my endless love (DON'T COUNT ON IT...)

BOTH: Two hearts, two hearts that beat as one Our lives have just begun (YUP. BORN YESTERDAY, THESE TWO...)

HER: and forever (WHERE HAVE I HEARD THAT BEFORE?)

HIM: Forever

BOTH: I'll hold you close in my arms I can't resist your charms

HER: No no no no no

HIM: No no no no no

HER: And love

HIM: and love

BOTH: I'll be a fool For you, I'm sure (YOU CAN UNDERLINE THE WORD "FOOL"...)

HER: You know I don't mind

HIM: Oh, you know I don't mind (PROBABLY DOESN'T HAVE ONE...)

BOTH: 'Coz baby

HIM: baby, baby, baby babe

BOTH: You mean the world to me (SMALL WORLD...)

HER: Oh I know

HIM: I know

BOTH: I've found in you My endless love

(instrumental interlude)

BOTH: yeah yeah, do do do

BOTH: Oooh, and love

HIM: Love, love love love

BOTH: I'll be that fool For you, I'm sure (UH-HUH)

HER: That you know I don't mind

HIM: You know I, you know I -

BOTH: I don't mind

BOTH: And, YES You'll be the only one, coz NO one can deny

This love I have inside And I'll give it all to you

HER: My love

HIM: My love

HER: My love, my love

BOTH: My endless

MY ENDLESS F**KING CLICHE MORONIC DIPHEAD LOOOOOOOOOVE......

Why does stuff like this earn millions of dollars? The same reason that McDonald's does. Marketing, endless marketing.

I could cry at the unrealized possibilities out there for something real...and the inane cultural emptiness that abounds.

LH, you're just pissed off because Shatner never recorded it. Once he does, you'll change your tune.

Aloha,
Mark

PS I'm glad somebody finally mentioned "Yummy Yummy." But what about "The Ballad of the Green Beret" by S/Sgt Barry Sadler? Or, even better, the B side: "Letter From Vietnam"? With that fantastically awful little bridge: "Last night/ we had a firefight/ machine guns shooting tracers/ through the night"

Thanks LHawk. You sound like you could be the soul-mate that numerous fortune-tellers have warned me about. Look me up the next time you're in Beverly Hills.

But actually, I see Cleopatra as a bit shallow. I view myself more as a sort of Madame Curie, only with better cheekbones.

My dear Cher, no one, simply no one can match your cheekbones, although Winona Ryder comes close...but that would be like comparing a bird of paradise with a lovely seashell...really no point even trying. You cannot compare the ultimate of one thing to the ultimate of another. I'm not sure I could handle the pressure of going out with you and showing up on all those wretched movie magazines at the grocery checkout. In fact, I know I couldn't. It will have to remain a beautiful dream. But thanks for the thought. Sigh...

Mark - Yes, but if Shatner did it, it would be damned funny! That would make it worth listening to. Occasionally. Well, VERY occasionally I guess... :-)

Regarding Barry Sadler...anyone who made a career recording songs supporting the USA position in Vietnam would have to be seriously out of it...or on someone's payroll (I wonder whose?). Or both. My best friend in the late 60's loved his stuff. Of course, his parents thought both houses of Congress were riddled with undercover Communist agents, so I would say his judgement was a bit skewed...they were still mourning the end of the McCarthy era in '68. Sort of like the rest of Skaneateles, New York, at the time, only even more so.

Have you people no shame?! I have yet to see some of the worst excuses for using radio air time. The Beatles' songs mentioned above--expecially Ringo's songs---were far superior to Tony Orlando & Dawn's "Knock Three Times" (a 3 person singing group which did not comprise a "band" of instrumentalists-see thread re bands of 3). Then for that matter, where are all the "songs" of "The Carpenters" (aka "The Pukenters" in my corner of the world!)which were quite scary! The worst was "Close to You." Whuussupp wif dat? Then God bless The Captain & his lovely wife, Tenille, but when they recorded "Muskrat Love," what were they thinking?!! Then there were the Cowsills' & as for me, I hated that da*n flower girl because she did not make me "happy, happy, happy, happy!" Well, a-wing-a-wep, & shoobeedoobeedoobahday, I say! The 60's songs were bad enough, but when they turned into the songs of the 70's it must have been a really bad "LDS flashback", man!(LOL) Deep thoughts & deep meanings in those lyrics: "I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know,. . .I will, I will I will, I will, I will, I will, . . .nobody, nobody, nobody, nobody, nobody, nobody. Well, I s'pose after those classics such as The Ballad of Jed Clampett, Green Acres, Theme for Gilligan's Island & Shaft, there was just nothing left to write! Nothing to do but turn to Bluegrass!

(quote) "Taliesn, My comment was more than a well meaning but misplaced suggestion--it was more of reminder to you about where you are. "

Again , I appreciate your "well-meaning-ness", but I know exactly where I am as I know the Rev.Bobert "personally" and it was he whom suggested I visit this sight as it allows a pretty wide range of perspectives to have a go round. It was also through the Right Rev. Bobert that i had that pleasure extended to meeting and listening live to Jerry Rassmussen and Fortunato and then his very talented son; a pleasure I put in writing to this mssgboard.

therefore I believe that you may have read some of my posts , but are only registering part of what I respond with. I enjoy live performances of practically anything. I tend to have a special appreciation of more accomlished musicians as I really love to *see* craftsmanship the way many of a more sports oriented taste love their particular atheletes for their signature styles in the performance of their respective craft.

I just attended the Harper's Ferry Crafts Festival in wild & wonderful West Virginia yesterday to meet some dear rinds of some 15 years and DV-taped one of the performing blue grass ensmebles whom were *excellent*, especially in the execution of their 4 part harmonies. I particularly loved zooming in on just the individual musicians to record their adept hands working their instruments during solos.

So ,beging your pardon , but I fail to see where my love of craft causes you to discomfort on my posting my musical ,and other, views here because I may not be the "right kind" of music lover .

(quote) "This being the sort of forum that it is, those two sites contain, if not our Holy Grail, at least a one of the better reflections of the North American portions of it--"

And I clearly said that I would visit them as I'm always interested on new sources as I did when URL's were submitted by other mudcatters to direct me to other "12 sting" guitartists as proof that 12 string artidstry is not dead.

(quote) " If your musical interests lead in other directions, that is fine--but you seem to be saying that you are too good to listen to the music that is important to us--which is very bad form--"

That's perhaps a reflection of a musical predjudice on "your" part which kind of plays into the threads asking if *folk-purists* aren't as *elitist* , even *snobbish*, about *their* miusic as those they criticize whom express other tastes.

I take a profound joy in my appreciation of crafts which includes the craft of making music and storytelling set to melody as much the appreciation of the craft involved in making a fine musical instrument .

Well crafted melody is as beautiful if sung to a single fiddle as when sung by a philharmonic choir. I loved the 21 Scots pipers and drummers I saw perform at the apparently most attended Rennaisance Festival on the Eastern Coast atleast near Annapolis,Maryland as much a the solo celtic harp-player who probably also made his own harp.

I also know what I use music for. I use it for nourishment of my artistic nature. It's as simple as that.

But, Little Hawk, you left out the best verse of "Endless Love"--the one that goes:

Bum, bum

buh-buh-buh-bum, bum, bum, bum,

buh-buh, buh bum-bum-bum.

Definitely a classic, in terms of lyrical content and subliminal meaning...

(It may even supercede Lionel Richie's "Penny Lover," which I always understood to be a song about an extremely inexpensive lady of the evening...!) denise:^)

Har! Har! Thanks for that reminder, Denise. :-)

Taliesin - I agree that live performances can often be great, even if you don't usually like the style of music much. That doesn't mean I want to buy the record, and it CERTAINLY doesn't mean I want to be persecuted by the same damn songs every time I'm in the grocery or the restaurant...but I am...the same songs again, and again, and again! It's enough to make a houndog roll over and die.

Kaleea - Yes the Carpenters, the dreaded Carpenters, the masters of middle-of-the-road mush. (I'm sure they meant well, though...) I read once that they sold more albums than Bob Dylan. That is rather sad.

Though perhaps you didn't mean them that way, your comments struck me as being rather condescending and dismissive and your expansive ramblings on your own listening experiences seemed to shore that up--I tend to over-react to that sort of thing--

As to my musical prejudices--they are probably much more rooted in my jazz and classical background, both as musician and a composer than with my affinity and fondness for traditional and popular music. I tend to respect a serious inclination to practice, basic reading skills, a practical knowledge of music theory, and respect for music and musicians of all kinds, and harbor the admittedly slightly arrogant view that musicians understand music better than non-musicians--

Dentists understand dentistry better. Bricklayers understand bricklaying better. The same follows with music, and anything else you could care to mention.
