The only song I can remember starting like this is 'The Donibristle Disaster', on a mining disaster in Scotland or the north of England.

Looks like some kind of RPG filksong-thingy to me! And a fairly poor sample of the genre at that, though there are plenty worse, LOL. (And in all fairness, some MUCH better.) At any rate, in case anyone cares, the lyrics may be found at http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Lair/1703/dragonroad.txt

If I didn't do the clicky right, oh well. ;-) For the record, I append the lyrics below as well:

DRAGON ROAD

'Twas on the third of August, out of Romner Ray,
Half a dozen horses and a wagon load of hay,
There had been a party, hangovers galore,
Our Clerics were unconscious, and our fighters saddle sore,

CHORUS: And there were dragons, dragons, flying o'er the road,
Wyverns all around us and behind us yellow mold.
And there were Orcses, Orcses filling all the woods,
They all jumped upon us because we were Lawful Good.

We were not discouraged; we were set to fight,
But we had drunk ten gallons of the finest wine that night,
Sir Morris was disheveled Sir Percy much the same,
Arid the elf who traveled with us was too drunk to know his name,

CHORUS

The Dragons got the horses, The Orcs got even more,
And chewing on our wagon was an ugly Manticore,
We finally woke our Wizard; he would make them pay,
But he really pulled a boner when he mumbled spells that day,

CHORUS

His fireballs misfired; his lightning missed 'the mark,
And soon the party found themselves encased in total dark,
He tried 'to Polymorph them, that stupid ancient louse,
We did not think it funny when Sir Kay became a mouse.

CHORUS

Our fighters bravely battled, but it was all for naught,
For we had not the measure of the monsters that we fought,
'Twas the Bard who saved us for he could do no wrong,
He really had them running when he belted out this song,

CHORUS

For (nicer, i.e. scan better) variations, look at http://members.tripod.com/~Moyra/Bardic/Dragon_Road.htm and Google:

"third of august" orcs

I'm not going to post them all here.

I knew the guy who wrote this. He was a D&D gamer before he started in the Society for Creative Anachronism. He lived in the Kingdom of Meridies.

I believe his SCA name was Cipriano d'Alvarez.

Oh, and the last couple of words of the chorus are "Lawful Goods" (plural); they could be taken according to the rules of the game.

There's a more accurate version here:
http://ryangraywords.livejournal.com/2001/05/22/
though it also misses the "lawful goods" plural.

Written by Sir Cipriano d'Alvarez, aka Guy Bradley.

I'd be interested in hearing the tune to this, if there is one :)

Actually, I went to Auburn University with the composer circa 1979/1980. He played quite a bit of D&D but then became more heavily involved with the SCA. There was quite a bit of overlap between these groups and Guy (Sir Guy in the SCA at the time) would sometimes play his guitar at gatherings and sing some of the things he was working on. These were the words exactly as I recall them (32 years later!).

Interesting group, the fellow who did the Fineous Fingers cartoons for Dragon Magazine was part of this clique and had just graduated and left school a few months earlier.

It's presumably sung to the tune of Thunder Road but I've since heard Thunder Road and, while it seemed similar in some ways, did not appear to be the same song. It's quite a fun song but it can flop if you don't get the rhythym and tune right.

Dragon Road
by Guy Bradley

It was on the first of August, out of Aromnerray,
Half a dozen horses and a wagon load of hay,
There had been a party, hangovers galore,
Our clerics were unconscious and our fighters saddle-sore.

Chorus

And there were dragons, dragons, flying o'er the road,

And there were orcses, orcses, filling all the woods,

We were not discouraged. We were set to fight,

And then we found the group was all encased in total dark!
He tried to polymorph them, the stupid ancient louse,
We did not think it funny when Sir Kay became a mouse.

Chorus

Our fighters bravely battled, but far beyond their class,
With twenty hit points to the head and thirty to the ass!
Our bard he finally saved us, for he could do no wrong
He really had them running when he belted out this song!

Chorus

You pause for half a beat at the commas in the first and third line of each stanza. Then you drawl out the first word of the last sentence in each. As in: "Heeeeeee really had them running when he belted out this song!"

Grr, minor correction on the first line. One further comment, too, he really didn't like the yellow mold because all D&Ders know that yellow mold is immobile and can't come after you but it fit too well and know one could think of a good alternative that rhymed and had the right number of syllables.

Whoops, sorry Guy. I missed that you had already posted in March. I know I recall you complaining about the hit points line so I guess I learned it when it was still a work in progress. Sadly, after singing it from memory for 30+ years I think I'm too old to relearn it. My kids (now grown themselves) have always liked it a lot.

My gaming group has had this mp3 floating around amongst us forever. No idea where it came from, but it's some pretty damn good filk group actually performing Dragon Road.

Wow.

No wonder I didn't recognize the tune, that may be what Guy intended but it's not the one we've been using the past few decades. Wonder where I misremembered it from? Ours has a lot of angst and emotion and changes in pitch. Wierd.
